Real Madrid Denied Rodri, Then Watched Barcelona Sign Him
Madrid rang City on 23 July to deny a Rodri deal, then chased him. Barcelona signed the World Cup captain on 18 August for €60 million up front.
Real Madrid telephoned Manchester City on 23 July to deny a deal for Rodri, four days after he won the World Cup Golden Ball. Club officials were angry at reports that personal terms were already done, and they said his game did not fit Jose Mourinho’s side.
On 18 August, Barcelona presented him as their player on a contract running to 30 June 2030.
The Phone Call That Was Supposed to End It
The call was aimed at City’s hierarchy. Madrid’s message, passed to Spanish reporters the same day, was that talk of an agreed move for the Spain captain was “far removed from reality.” Officials at Valdebebas said there had been no contact, and that repeated links to the Bernabeu had left the board fed up.
The football argument sat beside the denial. Mourinho, back for a second spell on a three-year deal after replacing Alvaro Arbeloa, wants a 4-2-3-1 with a double pivot and a more direct way of playing. Rodri built his name on the other thing: long spells on the ball, short passing, and control of the middle, the same habits that define him for Spain and defined him under Pep Guardiola.
Some people at the club still rated him after the World Cup. Those voices were described as a minority. City, with the midfielder into the last year of a deal that ran to 30 June 2027 and with a new-contract talk going nowhere, were prepared to listen at about €60 million. Madrid contacted City to reject those reports anyway, as if a phone call could shut the file.
Spain’s Golden Ball Reopened a Closed File
Rodri captained Spain through all eight matches at the World Cup and lifted the trophy after a 1-0 extra-time win over Argentina on 19 July at MetLife Stadium. FIFA handed him the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player. He did not score and he did not assist. In the final he completed 101 of 105 passes, won 80 per cent of his duels, and created two chances. Spain conceded one goal in eight games.
RODRI AT THE WORLD CUP
- Starts: All eight matches, as captain, after Spain’s first world title since 2010.
- Attacking output: No goals and no assists across the tournament.
- The final: 101 of 105 passes completed, two chances created, in extra time against Argentina.
- The prize: Golden Ball, after the 2024 Ballon d’Or, in a midfield that kept Spain in control.
Before that tournament Madrid were not trying to sign him. People inside the club pointed to his age, 30, to a long layoff after an ACL injury in September 2024, and to a new contract already agreed with Aurelien Tchouameni. His name had also been tied to Enrique Riquelme, the candidate who ran against Florentino Perez in June’s presidential vote. Perez won with 65 per cent. The World Cup cut through that caution. Madrid have been light in the holding role since Toni Kroos left in 2024 and Luka Modric left in 2025, and Rodri’s month with Spain looked like the player who used to occupy that ground.
By 24 July, club sources were telling people they expected him to arrive, even though Madrid still had not spoken to City about a fee. The denial from the day before had a very short life.
A Wedding Lunch in Begur
While Madrid talked as if the signing were in hand, Rodri was on the Costa Brava. He had gone there, after the final, for the wedding of Dani Codina, an old friend who is now Barcelona’s chief of operations and player services and who once did similar work at City. Several people from Guardiola’s old backroom were guests.
Rodri asked for a quiet place to eat where nobody would make a fuss. He was sent to Can Pitu, a local restaurant in Begur. A few minutes after he sat down, Barcelona sporting director Deco walked in. Nobody asked for a photo. At that moment the public story in Madrid was still that agreement was close, and some people at the Bernabeu treated the move as done.
At Codina’s wedding on 25 July, guests were already saying the player had changed his mind. Video of him singing Barcelona songs at the party leaked weeks later. Deco went to Madrid for another meeting on 5 August. Hansi Flick spoke with Rodri more than once. Barcelona’s Spain internationals from the World Cup squad, despite sharing a dressing room with him all summer, were not the main lobbyists. Madrid, once they sensed the shift, asked their own players and other contacts to reach him. His mind was already made up.
The reason he gave, through people close to the talks, was the football. He wanted a side that plays more like City and like Spain. Flick’s Barcelona looked closer to that than Mourinho’s Madrid. Barca had also just been burned on Bernardo Silva, who listened to them as a free agent and then joined Madrid. Deco wanted Rodri’s yes in writing before he went back to City with money.
Why the Bernabeu Walked Away Twice
Madrid believe they put a serious football and wage offer in front of him. The player still called it off. He rang chief executive Jose Angel Sanchez to thank the club and to end the soap opera, then waited for Barcelona to finish the work with City. Madrid had held two conversations with City, both about hypotheticals, and never put a fee on the table.
HOW MADRID LOST THE DEAL
- The first no: Before the World Cup he was not in the plan, with Tchouameni’s new deal done and injury history on the file.
- The 23 July call: Directors told City there was no approach, then spent the next days acting as if he were coming anyway.
- No bid: Two talks with City never became a number, while Barcelona kept raising theirs.
- The style gap: He picked Flick’s possession side over Mourinho’s double pivot, after Mourinho’s resistance to a Rodri signing had been the club line in July.
- The Bernardo scar: Barcelona would not go to City until they had the player’s word, and that delay still beat Madrid’s slower chase.
City, asked later whether they had preferred to sell to Madrid, denied it. People around the deal had said the opposite, that City found Madrid easier to work with and that Rodri’s choice of Barcelona had been clear for weeks. Both claims were rejected by the selling club. The result did not change. One version that spread in Madrid blamed a late attempt to grind City down on price. That account was never confirmed by either club, and it is not needed to explain the ending. Madrid paused. Barcelona did not.
€60 Million Up Front Closed the Deal
Rodri had successful minor back surgery in late July after weeks of discomfort, a short outpatient job City announced on 28 July. Enzo Maresca, City’s new head coach on a three-year contract after the club paid Chelsea £17 million, said before the operation that the player needed a holiday and would then be back. By 14 August Maresca had him at the training ground in rehab, not in the Community Shield squad that lost to Arsenal on 16 August.
Barcelona’s first bid, around 7 August, sat near €45 million plus add-ons. City valued him closer to €80 million and treated that opening number as unserious. A second bid of €60 million was also sent back. Nine days after the first offer, the clubs had a structure both could live with.
THE BIDS CITY ACTUALLY SAW
| Bid | Terms | City’s answer |
|---|---|---|
| Barcelona, first | About €45 million plus add-ons | Rejected; valuation nearer €80 million |
| Barcelona, second | €60 million | Rejected |
| Barcelona, third | €60 million up front, up to €76.5 million ($87.8 million) with add-ons | Accepted; about €11 million of the extras seen as likely |
| Real Madrid | No formal fee | Two talks, never a bid |
The up-front figure matched the ballpark City had been willing to discuss in July. The extras took the package toward the number City had held out for. Of those add-ons, about €11 million is viewed as realistic. Rodri landed in Barcelona on 17 August, did his medical the next day, and signed a four-year contract that will commit to Barça until 30 June 2030.

He left City after 298 appearances and 14 major honours, including four Premier League titles and the winning goal in the 2023 Champions League final. In a farewell recording he called the exit a mix of pride and sadness. At the airport in Barcelona he did not hedge.
It’s been an intense few days, I’m happy it’s all been resolved. To play for Barcelona is a dream for me. I’m really excited to join up with my team-mates, most of whom I already know. Now, it’s time to get to work.

Maresca Has to Find Another Pivot
Maresca had said in July that every manager wants Rodri, and that the noise around a World Cup captain was normal. After the sale he did not pretend the hole was small. City had already signed Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest and, later in the window, went back into the market for a midfielder Maresca knew from Chelsea. The manager’s public line was blunt.
We try to find the new Rodri, it is what it is. When they leave, you need to be good in recruiting the next one.
Enzo Maresca, Manchester City head coach
Last season Rodri managed 33 appearances in all competitions and started 17 of City’s 38 league matches, a long way from the player who won the Ballon d’Or in 2024. The World Cup returned him to that level for a month. Madrid saw it, said they did not want it, then decided they did, and still never tabled a bid. Barcelona saw the same month, booked a table in Begur, and paid.
The signing still reads as a loss at the Bernabeu, not as a clean tactical pass. Mourinho has Valverde, Camavinga, Tchouameni, Arda Guler, Jude Bellingham and Bernardo Silva to build a midfield with. He does not have the organiser who just won a World Cup. Flick does. Rodri made his first appearance as a blaugrana on 27 August, coming on in the 62nd minute for Marc Bernal in a 2-0 win over Athletic Club in front of 59,326 at Spotify Camp Nou. After the match he said it had been a long summer, and that he was where he wanted to be.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where was Rodri born, and which Spanish clubs did he play for first?
Rodrigo Hernández Cascante was born in Madrid on 22 June 1996 and came through Atletico Madrid’s youth system after starting at Rayo Majadahonda. He also played for Villarreal, and while he was there he studied business administration at Jaume I University in Castellon, before Atletico sold him to Manchester City in 2019.
What shirt number does Rodri wear at Barcelona?
He has been given the number 16 shirt in Barcelona’s first-team squad for 2026-27, the same number listed on the club’s official player page next to the midfield brief Flick has handed him.
How many Spain caps did Rodri have when he left Manchester City?
City’s farewell note put him on 70 caps at the point of departure, a tally that already included the 2024 European Championship and the 2026 World Cup he captained.
Have other Ballon d’Or winners joined Barcelona after winning the award?
Barcelona groups him with Johan Cruyff and Allan Simonsen as players who signed for the club after winning the Ballon d’Or, a short list the club published the day his transfer was announced.
Did Frenkie de Jong’s injury affect Barcelona’s push for Rodri?
De Jong came back from the World Cup with a torn medial collateral ligament in his right knee, and Barcelona put the recovery at about four months, which left Flick short of a proven holder and made the City captain a squad need as well as a statement signing.
