Gotham Loses Esther González as Al Qadsiah Collects

Spain forward Esther González joined Al Qadsiah on a one-year deal on Aug. 23, 27 days after Gotham FC ended her contract for free. She left as the club’s all-time scorer, with 33 goals across all NWSL competitions and four major trophies in three seasons.

Al Qadsiah, fourth in the Saudi Women’s Premier League last season, now has the first World Cup winner in the competition. Gotham has no fee, no striker, and a public goodbye that described a break in Spain.

A Mutual Split With No Fee Attached

Gotham announced a mutual contract termination on July 27, saying González, 33, was temporarily stepping away from soccer to attend to personal matters in Spain. Her deal had been due to run through the 2027 NWSL season. Jersey City collected nothing on the way out.

González answered in kind. She said the New Jersey years surpassed every expectation she had when she arrived from Real Madrid after Spain’s 2023 World Cup win, and that her family grew there too.

League journalist Jenna Tonelli later said Gotham did not expect her to sign with another club this soon. After Al Qadsiah’s video dropped, Gotham declined to comment. The quieter loss sits in the accounts: a 2027 contract ended as a personal leave, so no invoice went to Khobar.

33 Goals Left With Her in July

González joined Gotham in late summer 2023 and scored twice in five regular-season games, then the winner in that year’s NWSL Championship, the club’s first. Over the next two seasons she led the team in scoring, with 22 goals and five assists, and finished second in the 2025 Golden Boot race with 13. She was a 2025 MVP finalist and a two-time Best XI pick.

Her nine braces at the club tied Megan Rapinoe for the most at a single NWSL side. She scored four goals in her final three Gotham matches. On June 26 in Columbus she opened the scoring from the penalty spot in a 2-0 Challenge Cup final win over the Kansas City Current, her first goal in that competition and the winner in a third Gotham title game.

That is the player Al Qadsiah put in red and yellow. It is also the production Gotham will now ask Sam Kerr and a crowded attack to replace without a transfer check to soften the hole.

Al Qadsiah Gets a World Cup Winner

Al Qadsiah announced the signing on Sunday, Aug. 23, on a one-season contract with an option to extend. The club’s own welcome post put her in red and yellow until 2027. James Bisgrove, chief executive of Al Qadsiah Club Company, and head coach Giles Barnes attended the signing. Barnes, a former Orlando Pride assistant, had moved to Saudi Arabia earlier in the summer.

The club’s own words treated the move as a statement of intent: a World Cup winner, 36 goals for Spain, the 2025 UEFA Women’s Nations League on her list, and a proven finisher for a squad chasing a higher finish after fourth place in 2025-26. She also arrived as Euro 2025’s top scorer, from the Spain side that lost the final to England.

Adriana, the Brazil forward who left the Pride for the same club in January 2025, is already on the roster. González is the name the league can put on a poster that Adriana, Jéssica Silva, and Asisat Oshoala could not supply. She is the first player with a World Cup winner’s medal to sign in the Saudi Women’s Premier League, launched in 2022.

Spanish reporting put her Gotham pay near $560,000 net a year and described the Khobar deal as at least a doubling. Neither club has confirmed those figures. The direction of the money is not a mystery. A 33-year-old striker with a short remaining peak does not leave a 2027 NWSL contract, then sign abroad in 27 days, for a pay cut.

What the Orlando Pride Collected Instead

When Adriana went to Al Qadsiah on Jan. 30, 2025, the Pride announced a club-record transfer fee to Al Qadsiah and said the sale sat in the top three outgoing fees in NWSL history. League reporting put the number at $500,000, spread in a way that helped Orlando’s later spending. The Pride named the fee a record and wished her well. They did not dress the move up as time off in Brazil.

TWO ROADS TO THE SAME CLUB

Gotham’s version produced the warmer statements and the worse balance sheet. If Khobar was always the destination, the July language about Spain and a temporary step away closed the only window in which Gotham could have charged what Orlando charged. Other veterans have already tested the same corridor: Silva as a free agent, Oshoala on a fee. The template is not new. The World Cup medal is.

Sam Kerr Signed, Then the Door Opened

Australia striker Sam Kerr signed with Gotham on June 29, through 2030, as a free agent after Chelsea. She is not eligible for the league’s High Impact Player extra, and Gotham did not use that extra on her. Averbuch West told reporters there had been talks with González about using both strikers together. Outwardly the club never said Kerr was a replacement.

The calendar still reads as a squeeze. Kerr arrived. González, who had six goals and a trophy in June, was gone four weeks later. Gotham had just moved $350,000 in allocation money by trading defender Lilly Reale to Boston Legacy, funds that can sit on salaries without eating the cap. That is the toolkit of a club trying to hold two expensive No. 9s. It is also a toolkit with a ceiling.

THE MONTH THE STRIKE FORCE CHANGED

She and her partner, Estefanía Cruz, had their first child in January, and González missed Gotham’s FIFA Women’s Champions Cup matches around the birth. A personal leave in Spain was a story the league was ready to accept. A Saudi contract 27 days later is a different story, and Gotham was not the one telling it.

The Cap Gotham Could Not Stretch

The NWSL published a 3.7 million salary cap this season after a $3.5 million base and revenue-share add-ons, against a 22 to 26 player roster. Clubs may spend up to $1 million more on High Impact Players. Net transfer spending over a $605,000 threshold this year draws a 25 percent cap charge. Allocation money, which Gotham still holds in seven figures by league-side counts, is being phased out.

WHERE THE MONEY STOPS

• Base cap: $3.5 million on a 22-26 player roster for 2026.
• With revenue share: $3.7 million, the number clubs actually spend against.
• HIP extra: up to $1 million over the cap, which Kerr could not tap.
• Transfer threshold: $605,000 net this season before a 25 percent cap charge.

Averbuch West is known for packing talent inside those rules. The rules still lose to a state-backed league that does not publish a cap. Athletes get a short window to earn the bulk of their income. González, at 33, is on the late side of that window. If Khobar is a concentrated payday, that is a fact about NWSL pay as much as it is a fact about Saudi spending.

Khobar Bought a Striker and a Seal

The Saudi Women’s Premier League is four seasons old as a professional top flight and sits inside the kingdom’s wider push to put women on pitches, in stands, and on television. Clubs may sign a limited number of foreigners. Prize money at launch already sat in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Al Qadsiah’s pitch to González was the same one it used on Adriana: come, finish, lend the league a name the rest of the world already knows.

Same-sex relations are criminalized in Saudi Arabia. González has been public about Cruz and their child. Spanish reporting this week said she deleted Instagram posts that showed them, a claim neither she nor Al Qadsiah has addressed. In 2024, 135 players signed a petition asking FIFA to drop its Aramco sponsorship, citing abuses against women and LGBTQ people; two of the names were Maitane López and Sinead Farrelly, her former Gotham teammates. That history travels with her even if she never comments on it.
