Esther González Reaches Al Qadsiah Without a Transfer Fee

Esther González joined Al Qadsiah as a free agent on 23 August, 27 days after Gotham FC ended her contract so she could deal with personal matters in Spain. The 33-year-old World Cup winner left as the club’s all-time leading scorer, with 33 goals across all NWSL competitions. The same Saudi club had already paid Orlando Pride a reported $500,000 for Adriana in January 2025.

Gotham’s send-off read like a pause. Transfer journalist Ben Jacobs reported the move as a free-agent signing, which means the American club collected nothing on a player still under contract through 2027.

A Mutual Termination With No Price Tag

On 27 July the club said it had mutually terminated her Gotham contract as she “temporarily steps away from soccer to attend to personal matters in Spain.” Yael Averbuch West, the president of soccer operations, called her a model professional who had helped win four major trophies and said the club would support her wherever her path led.

González, who won the 2023 World Cup with Spain and joined Gotham from Real Madrid in August 2023, answered in the same register. She had scored the winner in the 2023 NWSL Championship, added a second league title in 2025 with 13 regular-season goals, and lifted a Concacaf W Champions Cup and an NWSL Challenge Cup.

She also said New Jersey was “the place where my family grew, too.” The Athletic reported that she and her partner, Estefanía Cruz, had welcomed a son in January. AP said she had 30 regular-season goals for Gotham and six in 15 appearances this year. The club said she scored four times in her final three matches, including a late brace nine days before the split, in a 3-2 comeback against Seattle Reign. She was listed as an excused absence for a 2-2 draw at Portland on 24 July, the night Sam Kerr scored her first goal back in the league.

NWSL posted her extension through 2027 in May 2025. That is the deal Gotham tore up.

Al Qadsiah Listed a World Cup Winner as Free

Al Qadsiah announced the signing on Sunday, 23 August. Agency copy of the club statement, carried by Infobae, said she had signed through 2027 with an option for another season, and that James Bisgrove, chief executive of Al Qadsiah Club Company, and head coach Giles Barnes attended the signing. ESPN noted Barnes had been an Orlando Pride assistant before moving to Saudi Arabia this summer, which puts a former Pride staffer on the bench of the club that paid Orlando for Adriana and then took González at no fee.

Saudi Gazette called her one of the most accomplished internationals yet to arrive. Wikipedia and several Gulf reports billed her as the first Women’s World Cup winner to play in the Saudi Women’s Premier League, which launched in 2022. Al Qadsiah finished fourth in 2025-26. González is a 2025 NWSL MVP finalist and a two-time NWSL Best XI pick. The league that bought Adriana now has a Spanish champion on a one-line invoice: free.

The $500,000 Sale Orlando Already Banked

On 30 January 2025 the Pride announced a club-record fee to Al Qadsiah for Adriana and said the sum would sit in the top three outgoing fees in NWSL history. The club did not print the number. The Equalizer, citing multiple sources, put it at $500,000. ESPN later reported that fee was spread over two years, which helped Orlando stay inside the league’s net transfer-spend rules when it later paid a world-record $1.5 million for Lizbeth Ovalle.

Haley Carter, then the Pride’s VP of soccer operations, said the sale would help the club keep buying talent. That is the path Gotham did not take.

Gotham fans told BBC Sport they were angry about that gap. The Pride proved a Saudi club would pay NWSL prices. Gotham’s July language closed the till first.

Kerr’s Return and the Minutes Behind It

The roster math around the striker job had already changed. On 29 June, Gotham signed Kerr through 2030 as a free agent from Chelsea, pending her international transfer certificate, and said she would join in July. Kerr, 32, is the NWSL’s all-time regular-season leading scorer. She won five Women’s Super League titles in England and scored 116 goals in 158 Chelsea games.

Averbuch West called the signing a landmark. The Guardian reported she later told reporters the club had talked with González about how to use both forwards. Outwardly, nobody said Kerr was replacing her. The calendar still squeezed the same minutes.

Skyscraper Blues, a Gotham fan site, wrote after the July exit that people had wondered whether Kerr’s return shortened González’s run, and that nobody had this ending in mind. She was 33, on a capped roster, watching a Ballon d’Or runner-up walk into her position on a deal that lasts until 2030.

Did Gotham Expect Her to Play Again?

League reporting says no. Jenna Tonelli, who covers Gotham, wrote on 23 August that league sources told her Gotham did not expect Esther to sign with another club this soon, because every club message had framed a return to Spain for personal matters. A New York Post source with knowledge of the situation said the send-off language came with an expectation that she would not play for a while, let alone join a new club within a month. BBC Sport said Gotham declined to comment when asked after the Saudi news.

If that last point was never written down, the “temporary” wording did the market work. A 2027 contract is only as real as the clause that stops a player walking into another league for free. Other NWSL sides now have a case study sitting on the same Saudi roster as Adriana.

Jessica Silva and Asisat Oshoala Went First

González is not the first NWSL name to take the Gulf offer. She is the first World Cup winner to do it, and the first to arrive after telling her American club she was stepping away from the game.

The league she left still pays under a cap. For 2026 the NWSL set a $3.5 million base salary cap on a 22 to 26 player roster, with revenue sharing lifting the figure to $3.7 million. A High Impact Player rule, in force from 1 July 2026, lets each club spend up to $1 million over that cap on players who meet sporting or marketing tests. The Athletic has reported some NWSL stars already clear an estimated $500,000 a year, with Trinity Rodman near $2 million under the new rule. Most of a 26-woman roster does not.

The net transfer-fee threshold for 2026 is $605,000. Spend over it and a club owes a cap tax. Incoming fees offset that tax. Orlando used Adriana’s sale as flexibility. Gotham’s termination created no offset at all.

El Mundo Says She Deleted the Family Photos

BBC Sport reported that same-sex relationships and sexual activity are illegal in Saudi Arabia, and that El Mundo claimed González had removed Instagram photos of her wife and their child, born in January, after the signing. González has not publicly explained the move, the photos, or how she will live in Khobar. Gotham still has not added a word beyond the July statement.

That silence sits next to a paper trail in the women’s game. In 2024, players published an open letter from 135 players asking FIFA to drop its Aramco sponsorship, citing the company’s state ownership, climate record, and Saudi law on women and LGBTQ+ people. The Guardian noted two of González’s former Gotham teammates, Maitane López and Sinead Farrelly, among the names. Al Qadsiah’s women’s side is the club that now employs the first World Cup winner in that league.

Gotham’s next home date, listed on the club site, is 28 August against Portland, billed as Pride Night presented by Flamingo, with Tobin Heath and Christen Press among the guests. BBC Sport asked the club about the Saudi signing on 27 August. Gotham declined to comment.
