Arsenal’s £75m Bruno Deal Leaves Newcastle Without Howe

Arsenal signed Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United for £75m on August 8, ending a summer standoff over their captain. He signed a long-term Arsenal contract of four years with a 12-month option and took the number 39 shirt.

Newcastle never wanted the sale. Eddie Howe had already stepped down rather than rebuild without the midfielder he called the side’s catalyst.

The £75m Fee That Ended a Summer Standoff

The number that closed it was a straight £75m ($101m), with no add-ons. Arsenal had spent June and July trying to buy him cheaper, and Newcastle had spent those weeks insisting their captain was not for sale.

Guimaraes, 28, told the Magpies after the World Cup that he wanted Arsenal. Personal terms were never the problem. Andrea Berta, Arsenal’s sporting director, and Mikel Arteta already had the player. Getting St James’ Park to accept a fee took until early August.

He left Newcastle’s pre-season camp at La Manga to complete a medical on August 5, then the clubs announced the move on Saturday, August 8. Berta put the signing in midfield terms, not romance.

Guimaraes called it one of the toughest decisions of his life. “This move is very tough because Newcastle means so much to me,” he said. “But I wanted to experience something new in my life. I feel ready for a new challenge for myself and my family.” He also said he wants to win trophies and “make history,” and that Declan Rice had texted him after years of midfield fights: “Come here and please no more fights, now we’re friends.”

THE PATH TO £75M

Newcastle’s early public position was that it would take at least £100m even to open a conversation, a figure set against the £100m Tottenham paid for Sandro Tonali. Arsenal, working through intermediary Kia Joorabchian more than through direct club channels, hoped to land him for about £65m. The compromise was £75m, paid up front.

Arteta Passed on Him, Then Spent Years Watching

In January 2022, Edu, then Arsenal’s technical director, and executive vice-chair Tim Lewis had a deal for Guimaraes from Lyon in reach. Arteta decided against it, unconvinced the then 24-year-old fitted the squad he was building. Newcastle moved instead and built a team around him.

He arrived on Tyneside with the club in relegation trouble and stayed four-and-a-half seasons. He helped them reach the Champions League in 2023 and 2025, and as captain he lifted the 2025 Carabao Cup after a final win over Liverpool, Newcastle’s first major domestic trophy in 70 years. Last season that side finished 12th.

Arteta’s view changed in the matches that followed. Guimaraes kept clashing with Arsenal in the middle of the park, and he kept producing for Brazil, for whom he has 48 caps and an Olympic gold from Tokyo. By the 2026 window, Berta and Arteta saw a midfielder who could play as a No 6 or a No 8, older than their usual targets at a point when Christian Norgaard was leaving for Everton and they wanted a player who would make the champions better immediately.

He will be 29 in November. Arsenal sold Leandro Trossard this summer and were ready to add experience because Mikel Merino, at 30, was the oldest outfield player they had. The bet is that a title side that waited 22 years can absorb a 28-year-old who already knows the league.

Why Eddie Howe Walked Before the Medical

Howe, 48, told Newcastle he wanted a break from football and left on July 31, three weeks before the new Premier League season. His last match was a 4-1 pre-season defeat at Bristol City. The club accepted the decision and moved for Matthias Jaissle, who had been running Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia.

The manager had already watched Alexander Isak leave for Liverpool last summer. He could live with further sales. He could not live with losing the captain as well.

Howe had said the quiet part before he resigned. If the captain went, he told people around the club, Newcastle would lose the player the rest of the side ran through.

Guimaraes still posted a farewell calling Howe the “king of this club.” The affection did not change the sequence. Once the player’s head had turned, Howe told the hierarchy he was done, and Jaissle inherited a midfield the previous coach no longer wanted to rebuild.

Lyon Takes a Cut of a Sale Newcastle Never Wanted

Ross Wilson, the sporting director who joined in October, has been blunt since the window shut. Gordon and Tonali were sales the club had planned for. The captain was not.

Even the £75m is not a clean number on Tyneside. Lyon hold a 20 per cent sell-on on Newcastle’s profit from the 2022 deal, and former clubs in Brazil take solidarity money.

WHO GETS A SLICE OF THE FEE

Wilson has since told supporters the club will keep selling senior players as it trades under squad-cost rules. Jaissle gets a clean slate and a cheque. He does not get the midfielder Howe said held the team together, and Newcastle framed £75m as a record for a player of that age and position because they needed a way to describe a deal they had spent two months trying not to do.

Rice, Odegaard and a Midfield Short of Rest

Arsenal went into the window needing bodies in the middle. Rice and Martin Zubimendi played heavy minutes in the title season, Martin Odegaard still runs the side from the eight, and Myles Lewis-Skelly is in the same group. Guimaraes does not automatically take anyone’s shirt. He gives Arteta a player who can sit or box-to-box, and he gives Rice a partner who has already spent four years kicking him.

The Premier League’s own comparison from 2025/26 is why the champions paid up. Guimaraes won more ground duels and tackles per 90 than any Arsenal central midfielder, and only Rice recovered the ball more often.

He also scored. Across 30 goals and 25 assists in 153 Premier League matches for Newcastle, and last season he scored nine and assisted five, 14 involvements, more than any teammate. That is the output Arsenal are buying into a midfield that already defends at a high level and needed someone else who can win the ball and still arrive in the box.

The shirt number is the same one he has worn since Athletico Paranaense. Arsenal confirmed he will wear 39 in north London, the number that was free when he arrived.

Twenty Minutes at Villa Park, Then a Panel Call

He has not walked into a guaranteed eleven. The first look at the Emirates was a friendly. The first competitive start was a showpiece. The first league minutes were a cameo.

• 31 August, at Aston Villa: Premier League debut as a substitute, 20 minutes in a 1-0 win.

“Very happy to have played my first minutes in this shirt and at this stadium,” he wrote. “Very excited about everything we have ahead of us.”

The Villa shift still produced an argument. In the 90+8th minute Ian Maatsen challenged him, the referee played on, and on September 9 the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents Panel said a penalty should have been given. The panel also said Maatsen should have seen a second yellow for a reckless challenge on Guimaraes’s standing leg, with no contact on the ball, and that VAR should have stepped in.

That is the other side of leaving St James’ Park. He left a team that was built around him for a squad that already had Rice, Odegaard, Zubimendi and Merino, and the first league evidence is a 20-minute run and a penalty that never got given. Newcastle voices who said he would sit on the bench were not inventing the minutes chart. They were describing the job he asked for, which is to fight for a place in a side that just won the league.

Dan Burn Wears the Armband Now

Jaissle has named Dan Burn as captain for 2026/27, the boyhood Newcastle defender who came back to the club in 2022. The armband Howe once gave Guimaraes sits on a centre-back. The midfielder who lifted the cup in 2025 is in red, wearing 39, competing with Rice for the same ground.

Arsenal closed a loop they opened when Arteta said no in 2022. Newcastle closed the era that started when they said yes. Howe is on a break, Wilson is already talking about the next sales, and Guimaraes is earning his minutes in a midfield that does not owe him a starting place.
