Villa Land Manzambi Record Deal as Newcastle Lose Out

Aston Villa completed a club-record signing of Johan Manzambi from SC Freiburg on 17 July, beating Newcastle United to the Switzerland midfielder after he preferred Champions League football at Villa Park. The 20-year-old arrives as Unai Emery’s first summer arrival following a breakout World Cup and Europa League final run.

Reports put the package between just over £50m and almost £59.5m (€70m) including add-ons, eclipsing the £50m paid for Amadou Onana in 2024. Manzambi signed a long-term contract.

Villa were also closing on a £38m move for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes around the same window. The double midfield hit followed Youri Tielemans’ £35m exit to Manchester United on a release clause and Onana’s serious knee injury at the World Cup with Belgium.

That earlier meeting came in the Europa League final in Istanbul in May, where Villa beat Freiburg 3-0. Manzambi had been named Europa League Young Player of the Season for his part in Freiburg’s run to the decider.

SC Freiburg confirmed the departure the same day. Board member Jochen Saier said the journey from the U19s to the Europa League final was special. “After some really intensive discussions and negotiations over the past few weeks, both sides will benefit from the agreement we have reached. From Servette to World Cup Breakout

Manzambi joined Freiburg from Swiss side Servette in January 2023. He started with the U19s and U23s before a first-team promotion ahead of 2024/25. Across 58 competitive appearances for Freiburg he scored 9 goals and provided 11 assists. Last season in all competitions the tally reached 7 goals and 9 assists in 47 games. Newcastle’s earlier Manzambi pursuit looked set to land the player. Club terms were done. Personal terms were verbally agreed. The Magpies identified him months earlier as a priority. Then Villa entered late and the Champions League pull decided it.
