The World Cup Split LaLiga’s Opening Across 12 Days

The LaLiga 2026-27 calendar ran Matchday 1 from 15 to 27 August after clubs with World Cup semi-finalists were held back for rest. Alavés opened the season at 19:30 on 15 August. Barcelona did not play Athletic until 21:00 on 27 August.

The Spanish federation published that split on 30 June. Four rounds later it is visible in the table, in a midweek round that has already started, and in a Madrid derby set for 20 September, the night before a FIFA window.

Why Matchday 1 Spilled Into Late August

The World Cup final was on 19 July. The players’ union AFE wanted the league to wait until 23 August so anyone who went that deep could take the 21 days of holiday written into the collective agreement. An arbitration panel backed LaLiga president Javier Tebas and kept the start on the weekend of 15 and 16 August, among the key dates the federation locked in.

Club delegates then voted unanimously on 9 June to split the opening round. Teams with a significant number of players in the semi-finals or the final would play on 25, 26 or 27 August, or ask for 18, 19 or 20 August. Atlético against Málaga used that earlier slot. Barcelona, Real Madrid and Valencia used the later one. Celta against Osasuna also moved to 27 August, for a fungus outbreak at Balaídos rather than for the tournament.

José Mourinho’s Madrid, appointed on 11 June, therefore played Espanyol in Matchday 2 before hosting Real Sociedad in Matchday 1. Hansi Flick’s Barcelona did the same shuffle. Edin Terzić’s first Athletic league game waited until the Thursday night at Camp Nou.

THE OPENING ROUND, 15 TO 27 AUGUST

The Matchday 1 scores posted by the league also include Sevilla 2-1 Rayo, Racing 2-2 Villarreal, Espanyol 3-0 Levante and Deportivo 1-1 Elche. Kylian Mbappé scored three in Madrid’s 4-1. Raphinha and Fermín López scored the 2-0 against Athletic.

Barcelona Lead on 12 Points After Four Matches

Clubs that kicked off on 15 August had a full pre-season. Clubs that waited until 25 August walked into Matchday 2 first. The table after the 4 to 7 September round still shows that uneven start. Real Sociedad and Celta have already played five games. Everyone else has played four.

AFTER FOUR ROUNDS

• 12 points: Barcelona are 4-0-0 with 17 goals scored and 2 conceded.
• 10 points: Alavés, who opened the season, sit second at 3-1-0 and 10-3.
• 9 points: Real Madrid are 3-0-1 after Betis won 1-0 at La Cartuja on 4 September, Troy Parrott at 80 minutes, Mbappé missing a penalty.
• 41 of 380: games played, 123 goals, 3.00 a match, with Sociedad and Celta carrying the extra fixture.

Promoted Deportivo have 8 points and sit fifth after a 2-3 win at Villarreal on 5 September. Athletic beat Atlético 3-0 at San Mamés the same afternoon, Nico Williams, Robert Navarro and Oihan Sancet. Valencia, 1 point and 1-9 on goal difference, were beaten 0-5 at Mestalla on 6 September by Lamine Yamal (twice), Fermín, Raphinha and Pedri.

Alavés did not have a squad full of World Cup semi-finalists. They have the points of a club that started on time. Madrid and Barcelona still have the goal difference of title sides, and Madrid already have a loss on the board.

The League Kept Only Two Midweek Rounds

The June grid promised a clean season: two midweek rounds only, Matchdays 6 and 33, and no Christmas football from 22 December to 2 January. Matchday 33 is dated 21 April. The first of those midweeks is already leaking. Sociedad and Celta played their Matchday 6 game at 0-0 on 3 September at Anoeta, in front of 30,364, because that pairing had to be brought forward.

The rest of the round is 15 to 17 September, and it lands on the same date the Europa League league phase opens. Champions League matchday 1 was 8 September. A calendar sold on rest now asks midweek league football of clubs still in Europe.

THE REST OF MATCHDAY 6

• 15 September: Rayo vs Espanyol at 19:00, Alavés vs Valencia at 20:00, Elche vs Real Madrid at 21:30.
• 16 September: Atlético vs Osasuna and Deportivo vs Sevilla at 19:00, Barcelona vs Racing and Levante vs Athletic at 21:30.
• 17 September: Betis vs Getafe at 19:00, Málaga vs Villarreal at 21:30.

The federation, LaLiga and Liga F built the year together, using more than 400 constraints so men’s and women’s calendars would not collide. Liga F kicked off on the weekend of 29 and 30 August. The complete Primera División fixture grid is 38 rounds and 380 games, from that stretched August start to 30 May.

A Madrid Derby, Then a FIFA Shutdown

Atlético host Real Madrid on 20 September. The return is at the Bernabéu on 4 April. The first FIFA window of the league season opens on 21 September and runs to 6 October, so the derby is the last league night before a two-week stop. Matchday 8 is not due until 11 October.

Further pauses sit on 9 to 17 November and 22 to 30 March, with another gathering from 7 to 15 June after the league ends. The Super Cup moves from its usual January slot to 2 to 7 February. The Copa del Rey final is 24 April at La Cartuja.

That is the trade the 9 June vote bought. The opening round was allowed to sprawl so the rest of the year could breathe. The breath starts the morning after the Madrid derby.

When Is the First Clásico of 2026-27?

Barcelona host Real Madrid on 25 October, Matchday 10, at 21:00 in Spain, in the first Clásico back at Camp Nou. The return is at the Bernabéu on 9 May, Matchday 35. It is the first league Clásico between Flick and Mourinho.

Camp Nou is listed at 99,354. Athletic’s delayed opener drew 59,326 there on 27 August, so the October night will tell how much of the rebuilt ground is actually open. Madrid posted the full year on 30 June, and the two circled dates were 25 October and 9 May, not the rest window that actually shaped August.

Mourinho’s first league season in this job is already being scored against those two nights. The rest rule is the mechanism. The Clásicos are the exam.

Racing, Deportivo and a Last Season at Mestalla

Racing, Deportivo and Málaga came up from the second division. Racing are back after 14 years and opened with that 2-2 against Villarreal at El Sardinero. Deportivo drew Elche at Riazor, then took those points off Villarreal. Málaga lost 2-0 at the Metropolitano and have 2 points from four games.

Villarreal, Málaga and Real Sociedad all asked to start away, citing stadium works, local events or security. They got that request. Valencia, under Carlos Corberán, will leave Mestalla after this season if the new ground stays on schedule. The last home league game is against Elche, Matchday 37, on the weekend of 23 May. The Nou Mestalla completion certificate is dated 11 July 2027. The old ground has been the club’s home for 104 years and holds 49,430. The farewell campaign is running under the line Mestalla és Etern.

Matchday 5 starts on 11 September with Sevilla against Valencia. The midweek round follows. Atlético host Real Madrid on 20 September, and the international window opens the next morning.
