Villa Sign Johan Manzambi After Newcastle’s Deal Collapses

Aston Villa completed a club-record deal for Johan Manzambi on July 17, after Newcastle United had already agreed a fee with Freiburg. The 20-year-old Switzerland midfielder picked Villa Park because Unai Emery’s side can offer Champions League football this season.

Newcastle had sold Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur for an initial £92.5 million on July 6 and wanted the World Cup breakout as the replacement. They never got him.

The Magpies Had the Fee, Not the Player

On July 9, Newcastle and SC Freiburg shook hands on a framework around £50 million, with German reporting putting the package near €60 million including add-ons. Club officials had been given permission to speak to Manzambi and his representatives while Switzerland were still in the World Cup. Personal terms were verbally in place. Newcastle’s process looked tidy until the last signature. Agreeing a number with Freiburg is not the same as agreeing a future with the player, and that gap is where the deal died.

Why Johan Manzambi Chose Aston Villa Over Newcastle

Manzambi said he wanted a big English club that is playing in the Champions League, and he already knew Villa from the other side. • Tielemans’ clause: Manchester United triggered Youri Tielemans’ £35 million release clause, stripping Villa of their other senior centre-mid option in the same window.
• The Istanbul file: Manzambi had already played against Villa as a second striker in that final, so the recruitment pitch was a reunion rather than a cold call.

Newcastle finished 12th in 2025-26 and had no European football to sell. That is the part of the race they could not fix with cash from the Tonali sale. Villa could wait until June 30 for their own books, then spend once Tielemans’ exit freed space, and still get the player they had ranked as a long-term target.

Villa also moved for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes in a deal reported at £38 million, so the Manzambi signing sat inside a wider rebuild rather than as a one-for-one for Onana.

Five World Cup Contributions in Four Games

Manzambi arrived on Tyneside’s shortlist before the tournament. The four Switzerland matches he did play then made him impossible to keep quiet. He scored three goals and two assists, and the Premier League later noted he left as the youngest player to make five goal contributions at a single World Cup in the last 60 years.

Tonali’s Money Never Bought the Replacement
