Real Madrid’s La Liga Opener Is Postponed, a Year After Tebas Said No

Real Madrid will not play its 2026-27 La Liga opener on schedule. The Athletic reported that Spain’s top flight has agreed to postpone the club’s home fixture against Real Sociedad because several first-team players are still competing deep into the World Cup, with the tournament running through July 19.

A year ago, league president Javier Tebas refused Real Madrid’s request for the same kind of relief, that time after the Club World Cup. Now he is the one drawing up the delay himself, for every affected club at once.

A Home Opener Vanishes from Round One

Real Madrid’s clash with Real Sociedad at the Santiago Bernabéu was due to open the season on the weekend of August 14 and 15. That will not happen.

The match moves instead to a midweek date between the second and third rounds of the campaign, once La Liga settles on a slot. The change follows weeks of pressure from Spain’s players’ union, the Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE), which argued that players advancing deep into the World Cup would not get the rest they are contractually owed if forced straight into a season opener.

Real Madrid triggered the rule because Kylian Mbappé, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Ibrahima Konaté were still alive with France, and Brahim Díaz with Morocco, when the two nations met in the quarterfinal. Whichever side won, Madrid was guaranteed at least one player through to the semi-finals, enough on its own to move the fixture.

Four More Fixtures Face the Same Squeeze

Real Madrid is not the only club affected. Of the ten matches originally scheduled for the opening weekend, five are now expected to shift, according to Spanish outlet AS.

Atlético Madrid’s clash with Málaga moves for a similar reason. The Madrid club’s own preview had confirmed a campaign opener against Málaga at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, before the World Cup adjustment pushed it back.

A fifth postponement still hangs on one result. If Argentina beats Switzerland in the quarterfinal, Real Betis midfielder Lo Celso pushes Valencia’s match with his club into the same midweek slot. If Switzerland wins instead, Sevilla’s Sow and Vargas do the same to the Rayo Vallecano fixture.

Why Is La Liga Bending Its Own Calendar?

La Liga split its opening round because a union agreement guarantees three weeks of rest and three weeks of preparation to any player reaching the World Cup’s later stages, and too many clubs now have semi-finalists for a single clean kickoff weekend to survive contact with reality.

“The AFE collective agreement will be fulfilled for all players,” Tebas said. “All players will get three weeks of rest, from their last game at the World Cup, and three weeks of preparation.”

He also explained how the round splits in practice. “We can divide the first gameweek into six games until August 14 and another three or four midweek (later) in August, between gameweek two and three,” Tebas said.

The players’ union had actually pushed for a simpler fix: delay the whole league by a week so every club starts together. A mediator sided with the clubs’ preference for a split calendar instead. Tebas has separately pushed to have the Club World Cup eliminated from the football calendar, calling the competition a drain on the same domestic seasons he now has to protect.

Real Madrid Still Has Seven Players Chasing a Trophy

As the World Cup reached its quarterfinal stage, Real Madrid still had seven players on international duty, spread across five national teams:

• Brahim Díaz, with Morocco
• Jude Bellingham, with England
• Marc Cucurella, with Spain
• Thibaut Courtois, with Belgium

Barcelona faces almost the same squeeze. Defender Jules Koundé’s run with France means the Catalan club’s own opener, at home to Athletic Club, has been pushed back too. Barcelona are now due to start their season away to Elche on the second matchday, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho will spend his opening days of pre-season without most of that list. Federico Valverde and Arda Güler, already eliminated, are expected back in training between July 20 and July 22, while Antonio Rüdiger, also out of the tournament, is projected to follow shortly after.

Tebas Rejected This Same Request a Year Ago

This has happened before. Almost exactly a year earlier, on July 13, 2025, Real Madrid’s Club World Cup run threatened to eat into the same rest period, and the club wanted its 2025-26 La Liga opener against Osasuna moved from August 19 to October 29 to compensate.

The proposal followed an agreement, confirmed by email and phone call, between Real Madrid, Osasuna, AFE and Spain’s football federation. La Liga’s Competition Committee rejected it anyway.

Tebas ruled out any special scheduling allowance for Club World Cup clubs that summer. “They ask for more days to rest, but they can earn €140 million,” he told Mundo Deportivo, more than double what Alavés spends running its entire squad for a season.

Real Madrid’s players did not accept the decision quietly. After the Competition Committee turned down the Osasuna proposal, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois accused the league of risking player health for the sake of the calendar.

With La Liga it’s always the same.

Courtois said, suggesting the league’s public war with the Club World Cup was bleeding into decisions about his own team’s recovery time.

The World Cup falls under a players’ union agreement that guarantees rest. The Club World Cup, run by FIFA outside Spain’s domestic bargaining structure, carried no such guarantee. This time, Real Madrid did not have to ask.

Mourinho’s Clock Starts Today at Valdebebas

Jose Mourinho’s second spell as Real Madrid coach formally began on July 13, when his contract took effect and players reported to Valdebebas for medical checks and the first training session of pre-season.

He will not have most of his biggest names for weeks. Real Madrid is skipping its usual United States tour this year, scheduling four friendlies in Europe instead, the first against Deportivo La Coruña in the Teresa Herrera Trophy on August 12.
