Rio Ngumoha Starts in Europe With Salah’s Spot Still Open

Rio Ngumoha started Liverpool’s Champions League opener against Atletico Madrid on 9 September, with Cody Gakpo absent. Andoni Iraola also handed Bradley Barcola a first start and left Victor Munoz on the bench.

The 18-year-old lasted 60 minutes on a European night that looked, from a distance, like the Salah succession story written in July. Up close it was a team sheet with a hole in it.

Gakpo’s Absence Hands Ngumoha a European Start

Club team news listed two changes from the 4 September win at Ipswich Town. Barcola came in for his first Liverpool start, and Ngumoha was told to come into the line-up because Gakpo was not available, with Munoz among the substitutes.

The XI at Anfield ran Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, Jeremy Jacquet, Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz, Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexander Isak, Alexis Mac Allister, Barcola, Ronald Araujo and Ngumoha. Jeremie Frimpong and Munoz waited behind them. Around the hour both wide starters were withdrawn.

That is the job as it stands three league games into Iraola’s first season. Mohamed Salah left at the end of 2025-26 after nine years and is now at Trabzonspor. The right side he owned has been filled by committee, and Ngumoha is on the committee when someone else sits down.

The Youngest Scorer Is Still on 2 League Goals

Rio Chima Ngumoha was born in Havering on 29 August 2008 and turned 18 four days after this season’s opener. Liverpool list him as a left-sided forward who can play anywhere across the front line, and as the youngest goalscorer in club history.

He has 2 Premier League goals. Both came in 2025-26. He has 21 Premier League appearances, one assist, and 33 games in all competitions for the club. The 2026-27 league column is two matches, 82 minutes, no goals.

Those two finishes still carry the records that made the summer copy so loud. They do not carry Salah’s old output, and Iraola has not asked them to.

THE NIGHTS THAT BUILT THE BRIEFING

1. 11 January 2025: Starts the FA Cup tie against Accrington Stanley, a 4-0 win, and becomes the youngest player to start a Liverpool first-team game at 16 years and 135 days.

He also collected the league’s Home Grown Debutant of the Season award for 2025-26. Arne Slot, who gave him those first nights, was sacked after a fifth-place finish. Iraola arrived on 4 June on a two-year contract and inherited a wide group that still had no settled replacement for Salah.

A Deflected Finish at Yankee Stadium

The succession talk hardened on the USA tour, when World Cup players were still coming back and the senior wide roles were open for inspection. Liverpool named a 31-player travelling party on 20 July, and Ngumoha was on it with Federico Chiesa, Lewis Koumas and the other early reporters.

Sunderland were beaten 4-2 in Nashville on 25 July. Four days later at Yankee Stadium he came on at half-time against Wrexham, was asked to play on the right, and a deflected shot made it 1-0. Pre-season across five of the six friendlies gave him 227 minutes and that one goal, 10th in the squad for minutes played.

Against Leeds United in Chicago on 2 August he went back to the left and caused problems down the Kerkez side. The tour question was already the one that still sits over him: if the new signing on the left is Barcola, does the academy forward have to live on the right?

Summer copy had already sold him as Liverpool’s answer to the Salah void. The USA games were the evidence file. They were also games staged while first-team regulars were still on international leave.

Where Does Ngumoha Fit After Barcola?

Iraola called Barcola the priority in that wide position. Liverpool completed the signing from Paris Saint-Germain on 31 August, after the league season had started, on a long-term contract and the No. 29 shirt, for a package reported above £100 million.

The France forward arrived with 152 appearances, 39 goals and 35 assists for PSG, back-to-back Champions League titles, three Ligue 1 crowns, and 28 caps. He can play across the front. His best work has been from the left, cutting inside, the mirror of what Salah did from the right.

That late move followed a summer in which a specialist right winger never landed. The list is short and finished.

THE RIGHT-WING CHASE THAT DID NOT CLOSE

• Yan Diomande: The first serious target ended up at Real Madrid.
• Yankuba Minteh: Talks with Brighton did not become a deal.
• Ismaila Sarr: A move from Crystal Palace could not be finished.
• Victor Munoz: Already signed from Osasuna as a left-sided forward, then used on both flanks; he scored the equaliser against Nottingham Forest.
• Bradley Barcola: The player Iraola wanted, in the building on deadline, first started against Atletico.

Gakpo stayed. So the left is now Gakpo and Barcola, with Munoz able to work either side. Ngumoha’s preferred flank is the crowded one. The open flank is the one Salah left, and Munoz has looked the more comfortable senior option there.

An 18-year-old on this roster was always going to live in a four-winger pool. Iraola needs that many for the league, Europe and the cups. The minutes still come in bursts, which is how a Champions League start appeared on 9 September and why a league start on opening weekend did not become a run of them.

Chelsea Banked £2.8m and Kept a Sell-On

Ngumoha joined Liverpool in September 2024 after eight years in Chelsea’s academy, which he entered at eight. The clubs could not agree a fee, so the Professional Football Compensation Committee sat, and on 5 February 2026 it ruled.

THE CHELSEA AWARD

• Initial fee: £2.8 million, non-negotiable, for training and development.
• Add-ons: Up to £4 million more for senior appearances, new contracts and England honours, a ceiling of £6.8 million.
• Sell-on: Chelsea take 20% of any profit if Liverpool sell him.
• Contract: Liverpool already tied him down to 30 June 2028, which is one of the triggers the add-ons watch.

The England senior cap he won in June is the sort of honour those clauses were written to catch. Chelsea no longer have the player. They still have a ticket on the career that the summer briefing kept inflating.

Bayern Munich’s interest was public enough in the summer for Liverpool to say he was not for sale at any price. That stance matches an academy forward with a long contract. It does not match a guaranteed starter on the right.

A Senior Cap That Stopped at the Warm-Ups

Thomas Tuchel took him to England’s pre-World Cup camp in Florida as extra body while Arsenal’s players arrived late from the Champions League final. John McDermott, the FA’s director of football, rang him at home and asked if he wanted to help the training group in Miami. He said yes.

On 6 June in Tampa, Tuchel changed his entire team at half-time of a 1-0 friendly win over New Zealand. Harry Kane had already scored. Ngumoha played the second half, became England’s 1,300th senior men’s player, and left as the fifth-youngest Three Lions debutant. He was named player of the match. He was never in the 26, and he was not on the 55-man provisional list, so he could not be added once the tournament started.

He said he was buzzing and not too nervous, and that the point of a chance is to take it, because they do not come around often. Raheem Sterling was the England player he watched as a boy. His mum, his brother and his best friend were in the stadium. Then he went home, and England went to the World Cup without him.

Born in England to Nigerian and Guadeloupean parents, he holds Nigerian and French nationality and has already chosen the Three Lions through every youth cap from under-15 to under-19. The senior night in Tampa is the one Chelsea’s add-on schedule cares about. It is also the one that sent him back to Kirkby as an 17-year-old with a cap and no tournament.

The Right Flank Is a Four-Man Rotation

Opening weekend at Newcastle on 23 August, he started and played 63 minutes in a 2-2 draw. On 29 August, his 18th birthday, he came off the bench for 19 minutes against Nottingham Forest, another 2-2. At Ipswich on 4 September he stayed unused while Munoz started, Gakpo started, and Barcola debuted in the 64th minute of a 2-0 win.

Then Gakpo dropped out and the European team sheet had Ngumoha on it again.

NGUMOHA’S 2026-27 WING NIGHTS

The pattern is not a teenager seizing Salah’s role. It is a teenager staying in the 20 when the wide pool is four deep, then playing when the senior left-siders are missing or being rested. Munoz has the Forest goal and the league starts that followed. Barcola has the fee and the first European start. Gakpo has the shirt that came off the team sheet on 9 September.

Ngumoha has the records, the Tampa cap, a contract to 2028, and a Champions League start that existed because someone else was not there. That is still a first-team career. It is not the vacancy Salah left.
