Folarin Balogun’s World Cup Form Prices Barcelona Out of a Bargain

Folarin Balogun scored twice against Paraguay at the World Cup and looked exactly like the bargain Barcelona needed for life after Robert Lewandowski. Three weeks later, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are all chasing him, and Monaco’s asking price has more than doubled.

The same tournament that raised his profile then buried it, first under a red card saga that drew in the American president, then under a quiet substitution as Belgium ended the run. Barcelona’s actual public target, meanwhile, has a different name: Julian Alvarez.

A Brace Against Paraguay, Then Chaos

Balogun opened the World Cup with two goals in the United States’ 4-1 win over Paraguay, and had a third disallowed for offside. Mauricio Pochettino, the United States men’s national team (USMNT) head coach, called him “amazing” after the final whistle.

It was the kind of display that made him look like the obvious value option for a Barcelona squad losing Robert Lewandowski, its number 9 for four years, once his contract ran out.

Then, on July 1, Balogun was sent off for a foul on Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic in the 61st minute of a 2-0 win, an automatic one-match ban that should have ruled him out of the last-16 tie with Belgium.

FIFA did not overturn the card. Its disciplinary committee instead suspended the automatic ban for a year-long probationary period, clearing Balogun to face Belgium after a call from President Donald Trump.

Hours later, Balogun wrote on his Instagram Story, “Purple hearts… the war continues,” over a photo from the pitch. Europe’s governing body, UEFA, was far less measured, saying the ruling “crossed a red line”. Seventy-two European lawmakers even called for a formal investigation into FIFA, the Daily Express reported.

Anonymous in Seattle as Belgium Ends the Run

Balogun did start once FIFA cleared him, but the World Cup ended in Seattle badly. Charles De Ketelaere scored twice as Belgium won 4-1, and Balogun managed one shot on goal before being substituted in the 92nd minute.

Youri Tielemans, Belgium’s captain, said the controversy had fired up his teammates. “Let’s be honest: we held a meeting when we heard the news,” Tielemans told reporters. “We told ourselves we needed to do our talking on the pitch.”

Belgium’s team account posted “Overturn this” minutes after the final whistle, and fans chanted “FIFA Mafia” on their march to the stadium. Balogun did not hide from the result afterward. “Belgium were the better team today,” he said. “They played much better than us.”

Why Has Monaco’s Asking Price Doubled?

Monaco is now asking for more than fifty million euros for Balogun, according to transfer trackers, roughly double the figure being quoted when Barcelona first considered him as a cut-price option in June. His World Cup form, and interest from richer clubs, are why.

Market reports pegged his value at 18 million euros in October 2025. By March 2026 that had risen to 22 million euros. When Barcelona were first linked with a move in mid-June, the number sat around 24 million euros, close to the 23.8 million euro figure calculated by SciSports, the football analytics firm whose Career Advice tool rated Balogun an 80 out of 100 fit at Camp Nou.

Paris Saint-Germain had already tried once, reportedly bidding 65 million euros ($76 million) for him back in November 2024. That interest never really went away, and his World Cup form has reopened it at a far steeper price.

Monaco is behaving like a club that expects to sell. It has already offered 15 million euros for Nantes forward Matthis Abline as a possible replacement, ESPN reported.

Three Bigger Clubs Are Circling Now

The interest is no longer just a Barcelona story.

• Paris Saint-Germain – needs a replacement for Gonçalo Ramos, who left for AC Milan, and has added Balogun to its list, according to the French outlet Foot Mercato.
• Chelsea – has the strongest interest of the three suitors, Foot Mercato reported.
• Tottenham Hotspur – is also pursuing Balogun as it hunts for a new center forward.

None of the three faces Barcelona’s budget constraints, and all three can match or beat whatever Monaco is asking.

A Striker Who Also Sells Shirts in America

Balogun’s fit at Barcelona was never just about goals.

But the same analytics that flagged Balogun’s fit were blunt about his limits. He is not yet the level to directly replace Lewandowski. He would arrive as a rotation option, not the guaranteed starter Barcelona’s model demands.

Why Didn’t Barcelona Trigger the Rashford Clause?

Barcelona let the June 15 deadline pass without exercising Marcus Rashford’s 30 million euro ($35 million) buy option, leaving his future at Camp Nou unresolved. Manchester United want the full fee, Barcelona want a discount, and the arrival of winger Anthony Gordon has already filled the role Rashford was signed to play.

That standoff capped Barcelona’s gamble to land Rashford at a discount, a bet that always hinged on United blinking first. United has not blinked.

Rashford scored 14 goals and provided 14 assists last season as Barcelona won La Liga and the Spanish Supercopa, yet he still lost his spot on the left to Raphinha and often started from the bench. He is currently at the World Cup with England, and Barcelona have not fully ruled out a return call on cheaper terms.

Alvarez Is the Name Flick Keeps Saying

While Balogun’s price climbed, Barcelona’s own public rhetoric moved elsewhere. Head coach Hansi Flick has no doubt that Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez is the striker Barcelona need to sign, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Atletico have already rejected an offer of 150 million euros for Alvarez this year, that one from Real Madrid, and have no appetite for strengthening a direct rival. Former Uruguay striker Diego Forlan has already put a price signal on the Alvarez rumours that lines up with that resistance.

Lamine Yamal, Barcelona’s forward, has lobbied publicly for the move, saying he “hopes” to see Alvarez sign because he is a “top player” who would be a “great fit” at Camp Nou, according to the Metro.

Barcelona have been rebuffed elsewhere too. An informal enquiry about Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane went nowhere, with the England captain focused on a new German contract, ESPN reported. Chelsea’s Joao Pedro remains a fallback option, though prising him from Stamford Bridge will not be easy, which could leave Ferran Torres leading the line if every bigger name falls through.

Numbers That Explain Monaco’s Reluctance to Sell Cheap

Whatever Barcelona decide, Monaco’s resistance to a discount is rooted in what Balogun actually did this season. Only Kylian Mbappe matched Balogun’s eight-game scoring streak anywhere in Europe’s top five leagues this season, according to Monaco’s own club site.

• 19 goals and four assists – his combined output in all competitions for Monaco.

Data from Opta shows a season total that ranks fourth among Ligue 1’s scorers, ahead of several far more expensive forwards across the continent.

Lewandowski is already training with Chicago Fire, the Major League Soccer (MLS) club, not Barcelona. The Catalans have earmarked slightly more than 100 million euros in total for reinforcements this summer, with the bulk of it reserved for a new number 9. None of the confirmed conversations about that money mention Balogun’s name.
