Summerville Turned a Shock Call-Up Into Two World Cup Goals

Koeman’s uncapped West Ham winger scored twice and added two assists at the 2026 World Cup, then missed in the Morocco shootout before a £55m Al Hilal move.

Crysencio Summerville scored twice and added two assists in four World Cup games after Ronald Koeman called him up with zero senior caps. The West Ham winger had never played for the Netherlands’ senior team when the 26-man list went out on 27 May 2026.

He started against Japan, finished the tournament by missing in a round of 32 shootout against Morocco, and joined Al Hilal weeks later for £55 million plus add-ons.

An Uncapped Winger on Koeman’s 26

Koeman named him in Zeist with no senior minutes on the book. West Ham had just gone down, and Summerville, 24, born in Rotterdam on 30 October 2001, had 5 Premier League goals in 31 games, 29 of them starts. Only Jarrod Bowen attempted (125) or completed (53) more dribbles among the Hammers than his 51 from 118.

In all competitions he had 7 goals and 5 assists from 34 games. Across two seasons in east London that came to 8 goals in 56 appearances. The numbers were fine for a relegated club. They were thin for a World Cup wide role next to Cody Gakpo and Donyell Malen.

March had already gone wrong. Koeman wanted him for the friendlies with Norway and Ecuador, then injury ruled him out. The coach said at the time that if Summerville had been fit, he would have been in, and that the right side of the Dutch attack was the thinner one. “What I have heard and seen, I have no worries at all about that,” Koeman said of whether the winger would fit the group.

On the KNVB campus after the squad came out, Summerville said he had typed a World Cup target into his phone. “I thought 24 is a nice age for a World Cup.” He also said he was grateful for the World Cup chance after taking the call on the couch with his family.

I was with my family when I got the call. We went to celebrate, and we prayed. We were all on the couch at home when we heard, so a lot of emotion came out.

Crysencio Summerville, West Ham forward, club interview, 13 June 2026

He told a Dutch interviewer that so much emotion was unleashed, and that it was quite a surprise, because a coach has to see how you fit the group as well as the playing style. He said the staff had seen matches, he knew players from youth teams, and that if Koeman started him he would be there from the first whistle.

Algeria Almost Ended the Gamble Before Japan

The first look came on 3 June in Rotterdam. Koeman started him on the right with Malen and Gakpo against Algeria, and the Dutch lost 0-1. Summerville was taken off at half-time after 45 minutes. The debut drew sharp noise at home, the sort that makes a shock pick look like a camp luxury.

Five days later he played the full 90 in a 2-1 win over Uzbekistan in New York. That was cap number two, still with no goal. The Japan opener was 11 days after the Algeria night and 18 days after the squad went public, a jump from zero caps to a World Cup that left almost no time to hide a bad first impression.

Koeman still picked him to start the tournament. The right flank had been a Dutch problem for years, with No. 10s such as Xavi Simons asked to fill it so Denzel Dumfries could attack. Summerville, more often a left winger at club level, was the runner Koeman was willing to try on that side without a senior sample.

How Summerville Played at the World Cup

He repaid the start in Arlington, then again as a half-time sub in Houston. By the time Tunisia were put away he had two goals and a first assist, and the Netherlands sat top of Group F on 7 points with 10 scored and 4 conceded.

The Opener in Arlington

On 14 June at AT&T Stadium, with 69,285 in the building, Virgil van Dijk headed the Dutch in front in the 51st minute from a Ryan Gravenberch cross. Keito Nakamura levelled in the 57th. Summerville, wearing 24, then picked the ball up at the corner of the box, stepped onto his left foot, and curled a low shot in off the far post in the 64th minute.

Daichi Kamada made it 2-2 in the 88th. FIFA’s match centre records the Netherlands’ 2-2 draw with Japan with those four scorers. Summerville played 69 minutes, took a yellow, and left as the Dutch attacker who had actually changed the score.

Sweden and the Half-Time Switch

Koeman started Brian Brobbey against Sweden on 20 June at NRG Stadium (68,777) and sat Summerville. Brobbey scored in the 5th and 17th minutes. Gakpo added two more just after the break, in the 47th and 54th. Summerville came on at half-time for Malen, laid on Gakpo’s second, and scored the fifth in the 89th minute of a 5-1 win. Anthony Elanga’s 59th-minute goal was the only Swedish reply.

Tunisia in Kansas City on 25 June was a 19-minute cameo in a 3-1 win, after the squad had used the Netherlands’ Kansas City base camp as its group home. An Ellyes Skhiri own goal in the 3rd minute and Brobbey in the 7th settled the night early; Hamza Mastouri made it 1-2 before Jan Paul van Hecke scored in the 62nd. Arrowhead held 68,391.

THE FOUR WORLD CUP NIGHTS

Date Opponent Result Min G/A
14 June Japan 2-2 69 1 / 0
20 June Sweden 5-1 45 1 / 1
25 June Tunisia 3-1 19 0 / 0
29 June Morocco 1-1, 2-3 pens 120 0 / 1

The 2026 match log for Summerville adds up to 253 minutes across those four games, two of them starts, with one yellow and no penalties scored in open play.

Guadalupe Ends It From 12 Yards

The round of 32 was 29 June at Estadio BBVA in Guadalupe, Mexico, in front of 51,243. Koeman put Summerville back in the XI. In the 72nd minute he ran onto a flick, drove the counter, and found Gakpo, who had just made public the loss of his unborn son, to slam the Dutch in front.

Issa Diop, a former West Ham centre back, headed Morocco level in the first minute of stoppage time from a Chemsdine Talbi cross. Extra time stayed 1-1. Bart Verbruggen denied Soufiane Rahimi. Spot kicks decided it.

THE MONTH THE BET WAS SETTLED

  1. 27 May 2026: Koeman names a 26-man World Cup squad with Summerville on zero senior caps.
  2. 3 June 2026: Senior debut in a 0-1 friendly loss to Algeria; withdrawn at half-time.
  3. 8 June 2026: Full 90 in a 2-1 win over Uzbekistan, still without a senior goal.
  4. 14 June 2026: First World Cup start; first senior goal in a 2-2 draw with Japan.
  5. 20 June 2026: Half-time sub, a goal and an assist in a 5-1 win over Sweden.
  6. 29 June 2026: Starts the round of 32, assists Gakpo, then misses in the shootout as Morocco go through 3-2 on penalties.
  7. 24 July 2026: Completes a move to Al Hilal on a deal running to 30 June 2030.

West Ham’s own report of the night says Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber and Summerville were all unsuccessful from 12 yards, and that Ismael Saibari scored the kick that made it 3-2. The Dutch order was Teun Koopmeiners, Kluivert, Wout Weghorst, Timber, then Summerville. Morocco’s five were Neil El Aynaoui, Rahimi, Talbi, Achraf Hakimi and Saibari. Yassine Bounou stopped Summerville’s attempt. He had missed from 12 yards against Morocco after creating the only Dutch goal of the tie.

Four World Cup games, two assists as well as the two goals, and six caps in total once the two June friendlies are counted. The Netherlands, at a 12th finals, were out in the first knockout round of a 48-team tournament. Their three runner-up finishes (1974, 1978 and 2010) remain the most of any side yet to win it, and the historical win rate of 54.5% (30 wins from 55 matches, shootouts excluded) was the figure hanging over the squad when it landed in North America.

£55 Million After Four Tournament Nights

European clubs had already moved. Roma bid €46 million on 19 July and were turned down. Manchester United had asked. Aston Villa had been in the mix. Paris Saint-Germain had been around the name after the Japan game. West Ham, building a Championship squad, waited for a number that cleared the roughly £50 million it had wanted for a contract that ran to 2029.

WHO BID, WHO PAID

  • Roma’s bid: €46 million, rejected on 20 July, after which the Italian club would not match the Saudi figure.
  • United and Villa: Enquiries only; United were still trying to move Marcus Rashford before they could press.
  • Al Hilal’s deal: An initial £55 million plus £5 million in add-ons, signed as a four-year contract after a medical in Amsterdam.

Transfermarkt records the guaranteed fee at €64.5 million and lists him as having joined Al Hilal on 24 July, with the contract running to 30 June 2030. The sale sat third on West Ham’s all-time list behind Declan Rice and Mateus Fernandes, who had already gone to Tottenham for £85 million. For a relegated club it was the cleanest possible end to a winger who had one year left of Premier League tape and four loud World Cup nights.

Simone Inzaghi’s squad already held Ruben Neves, Karim Benzema and Theo Hernandez. Summerville went anyway. The €70 million move to Al Hilal is the package West Ham sold, add-ons included, and it closed the market argument that Japan had opened. He has since started the Saudi season; the World Cup tape is what the fee bought.

Koeman Needed a Runner for Dumfries

The selection looks less wild once the right wing is treated as the actual problem. Koeman said in March that the left was well stocked and the right was not, and that Summerville was already above other fringe names in the queue. He had watched the West Ham tape long enough to skip a senior camp. The Algeria half was the first live look, and it was poor. Japan was the second, and it was a goal.

He joined a short modern Dutch list of World Cup starters with two caps or fewer, after Kew Jaliens in 2006, Paul Verhaegh in 2014 and Andries Noppert in 2022. Transfermarkt lists Suriname as well as the Netherlands under his citizenship, and Dutch-born players with those roots have been a live recruiting pool for Natio. When Koeman called, the choice was Oranje.

The bet was never that the Netherlands would win the tournament. It was that a 1.72 m Feyenoord-raised winger, fresh from a drop into the Championship, could give Koeman a one-v-one threat Dumfries could play off. Four games produced two goals, two assists, a 120-minute knockout shift, and a miss from the spot. West Ham then took the Saudi bid. That is the whole settlement, from the couch in May to Riyadh in July.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Netherlands youth teams did Summerville play for?

He played for the under-17s (16 caps, 1 goal, and a European title in England in 2018), the under-18s (4 caps, 1 goal), the under-19s (5 caps, 6 goals) and the under-21s (8 caps, 3 goals) before Koeman’s senior call. The club path under that was RVV Noorderkwartier, then Feyenoord from 2008 to 2018, then Leeds United and the 2024 move to West Ham.

What shirt number did Summerville wear at the World Cup?

He wore 24 for the Netherlands at the finals, with Bart Verbruggen in 1, Virgil van Dijk in 4, Frenkie de Jong in 21 and Cody Gakpo in 11 in the Japan starting XI. At West Ham he had been the No. 7.

Who missed Koeman’s 26-man World Cup squad?

Jeremie Frimpong and Stefan de Vrij (injury) were among the senior names left out when the list was read on 27 May. Lutsharel Geertruida, Ian Maatsen and Justin Bijlow were asked to stay fit as standbys. Mats Wieffer, Marten de Roon and Guus Til were the other notable inclusions alongside Summerville.

When does Summerville’s Al Hilal contract expire?

Transfermarkt lists the deal as running to 30 June 2030 after a 24 July 2026 joining date, a four-year contract that replaced a West Ham deal previously dated to 2029. Roma’s €46 million bid never reached that length of commitment because West Ham would not sell at that price.
