PSV Hands Captaincy to Mauro Junior as Exit Rumors Swirl

PSV have handed the captaincy to a player three different clubs are actively trying to sign. The Eindhoven club confirmed Thursday that Mauro Junior will wear the armband as full-time captain while Jerdy Schouten recovers from the torn ACL that will keep him out for the rest of 2026.

The 27-year-old Brazilian had already been filling in as interim skipper. Making it official does nothing to quiet the transfer noise around him. Porto, Fenerbahce and Leeds United are all circling a player PSV is simultaneously racing to tie down with a new contract.

PSV’s Armband Goes to Its Most Wanted Man

PSV announced the change through its official channels, framing it as recognition of nearly a decade of service in Eindhoven.

The club said in its statement, confirming what had been an open secret inside Philips Stadion for weeks. Schouten remains PSV’s captain in name for next season too. He simply cannot do the job from the treatment table, and Mauro Junior takes over in full until that changes.

Schouten tore his ACL in April and is not expected to return to the pitch before 2027, based on the club’s own recovery estimates. Bosz did not just promote one player. He also rebuilt the entire leadership chain around him.

Perisic and Veerman Complete a Shaky Trio

Ivan Perisic became vice-captain. Joey Veerman slotted in third. Both moves were announced alongside Mauro Junior’s promotion, according to Dutch outlet Voetbal International.

All three carry their own transfer questions this summer, which makes the new hierarchy a curious bet on stability.

Perisic, a Croatia international, has carried that Inter link for months without it going away. Veerman, roughly a decade younger, is reportedly just as open about wanting a change of scenery. PSV built its command structure this week from the three players least likely to still be wearing red and white by September.

Erasing a 12 Million Escape Hatch

Mauro Junior signed a contract extension last year that runs through 2029. Buried inside it is a release clause of just 12 million euros (roughly $13 million), a figure PSV now considers dangerously low for a player of his standing.

Goal.com reported that PSV are working to renew his deal specifically to strip that clause out, having already fended off serious interest from Fenerbahce and FC Porto this year. Porto reportedly came close to an agreement last month before the move cooled. Fenerbahce, according to the same reporting, wanted to accelerate a deal of its own.

PSV’s hierarchy fears losing him for a fee well below his market value, and the club is prepared to negotiate hard to prevent it.

Porto, Fenerbahce and Leeds All Want the Same Man

• FC Porto came close to a deal in June before talks stalled, and Portuguese reporting says the Primeira Liga club remains in contact.
• Fenerbahce wants to accelerate a move this window and joined Porto in the chase over the summer.
• Leeds United submitted an enquiry in May, viewing Mauro Junior as cover at left back for manager Daniel Farke’s squad.
• Several unnamed South American and South European clubs are also reportedly tracking him, though none have gone public with an approach.

The pull is easy to explain. Mauro Junior produced a goal and 11 assists in 37 appearances this season alone, his best output in nine years at the club. That breakout campaign helped push his career numbers to 200 appearances, 9 goals and 23 assists since arriving from Desportivo Brasil in 2017, alongside four Eredivisie titles.

Why Does Mauro Junior Want to Leave PSV?

Mauro Junior is reportedly chasing a bigger stage partly to force his way into Brazil’s senior national team picture. As recently as last month he was still being described as a Brazil youth international, never capped by Carlo Ancelotti’s senior squad despite years of Champions League football with PSV.

A move to the Premier League, Portugal’s top flight or Turkey’s Super Lig would put him in front of Brazilian selectors more often than Eredivisie football does, even a league still watched closely by European scouts. PSV, in turn, has to prove it can offer something close to that same exposure if it wants to keep him past this window.

It is an unusual tug of war. Most exit requests are about wages or trophies. Mauro Junior already has four league titles and a contract through 2029. What he reportedly wants is a phone call from Ancelotti.

How Schouten’s Season Fell Apart

Schouten’s absence created the vacancy in the first place. Here is how it unfolded.

1. April 4, 2026: Schouten goes down clutching his knee during PSV’s 4-3 win over FC Utrecht and has to be stretchered off.
2. April 5, 2026: PSV confirms tests showed a torn ACL requiring surgery, ruling him out for the rest of the season and the World Cup with the Netherlands.
3. Spring 2026: Mauro Junior, already vice-captain, takes the armband on an interim basis for the run-in.
4. Late May 2026: Porto and Leeds United emerge as suitors just as Mauro Junior’s interim captaincy starts drawing wider attention.
5. June 2026: Fenerbahce joins the chase, and Porto reportedly nears an agreement before the move cools off.
6. July 2026: PSV confirms Mauro Junior as full-time captain for as long as Schouten is out, with Perisic and Veerman completing the new hierarchy.

PSV’s own medical update on Schouten’s knee pointed to a long recovery process.

“When it happened, I actually knew straight away that something was wrong,” Schouten said on the club’s website in the days after the injury. The blow reached beyond Eindhoven, too. It also cost Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman a starting midfield option for the World Cup.

Mauro Junior’s First Test Comes Fast

Mauro Junior will wear PSV’s armband for the first time in a competitive fixture when the club faces AZ in the Johan Cruyff Shield, the traditional curtain raiser between the Eredivisie champions and the cup winners.

Whatever happens with Porto, Fenerbahce or Leeds this window, he walks out for that game wearing the armband in his own right, no longer standing in for an injured teammate.
