Arnold Gambled Iraq’s World Cup on Ahmed Qasem
Arnold staked Iraq’s World Cup on Ahmed Qasem after a May FIFA switch. The group paid 123 minutes and no points.
Ahmed Qasem played 123 minutes at the 2026 World Cup for Iraq, 36 days after FIFA cleared his switch from Sweden. Graham Arnold put the Nashville SC winger in the 26 for the country’s first finals since 1986. France, Norway and Senegal then scored 12 and left Iraq with 0 points.
FIFA Cleared Him 36 Days Before Norway
FIFA accepted Qasem’s request on May 11, 2026, the same day it cleared Dundee United defender Dario Naamo. Both met the family-tie test for a one-time change of association, because neither had played a senior competitive match for another country.
Qasem was born in Motala, Sweden, on July 12, 2003, with Iraqi and Palestinian ancestry, and his mother was born in Iraq. Iraq’s football association said his identity papers were finished in record time at the consulate in Michigan, after which the file moved from the Swedish federation to Baghdad.
He had already worn Sweden shirts at under-17, under-19 and under-21 level, so the nationality switch from Sweden was a one-way door. He cannot go back.
THE SWITCH CALENDAR
- May 11, 2026: FIFA approves the Iraq move for Qasem and Naamo.
- May 29, 2026: He starts a friendly against Andorra, plays 65 minutes, and Iraq win 1-0.
- June 1, 2026: MLS confirms he is in Arnold’s World Cup 26, still on one senior cap.
- June 16, 2026: Iraq open against Norway at Gillette Stadium, 36 days after the FIFA ruling.
Two more friendlies sat between the debut and the opener, a 1-1 draw with Spain on June 4 and a 0-2 loss to Venezuela on June 10. By Foxborough he had three Iraq appearances and no senior goals.
Naamo and Nasrawe Did Not Make the 26
Arnold first named 34 players, then cut to 26 after the Andorra game. FIFA’s squad note listed Qasem as previously uncapped when the trim began, and said the attacking midfielder had made the final cut so he could play in the country where he earns his club wage.
The same cut closed the door on other Europe-raised names who had been in the conversation.
LEFT OUT OF THE 26
- Dario Naamo: The 20-year-old Dundee United full-back was FIFA-cleared on May 11 and still omitted.
- Jussef Nasrawe: The 19-year-old Bayern Munich II midfielder, tracked by Arnold’s staff, did not make it.
- Montader Madjed: The highly touted winger was another name FIFA listed among those who missed out.
Qasem, on one cap, stayed. MLS posted him on Iraq’s final 26-man roster with a line of 5 goals and 3 assists in 53 Nashville games across all competitions, plus a 2025 U.S. Open Cup winner’s medal. He would wear No. 11 for Iraq and No. 37 for Nashville.
How Many Minutes Did Qasem Play at the World Cup?
He played 123 minutes in three games, with two starts and one substitute appearance, and finished with no goals and no assists. Iraq scored once in the tournament, lost all three, and ended with a goal difference of -11, last in Group I and last at the finals on that number.
QASEM’S GROUP I LEDGER
| Date | Match | Venue | Qasem | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| June 16 | Iraq vs Norway | Gillette Stadium, Foxborough (63,106) | On 73rd minute, 17 min | 1-4 |
| June 22 | France vs Iraq | Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia (68,324) | Started at right wing, 90 min, 23 touches, 1 chance | 0-3 |
| June 26 | Senegal vs Iraq | BMO Field, Toronto (43,036) | Started, pulled after 16 min | 0-5 |
Erling Haaland scored in the 29th and 43rd minutes in Foxborough, Aymen Hussein headed the equalizer in the 39th, and Leo Østigård made it 3-1 before Hussein deflected a fourth into his own net in the 90+6th. Qasem’s first World Cup touch came with the tie already gone.

Six days later he started against France in a 4-1-4-1. Kylian Mbappé scored in the 14th and 54th minutes and Ousmane Dembélé added a third in the 66th. A thunderstorm stopped the game at half-time for nearly two hours. Qasem lasted the full 90, with 23 touches and one chance created, and Arnold did not take him off.
The Senegal night in Toronto was shorter. Rebin Sulaka was sent off in the 13th minute, Habib Diarra had already scored in the 4th, and Arnold pulled several starters early, Qasem among them after 16 minutes. Ismaïla Sarr, Pape Gueye (twice) and Iliman Ndiaye finished a 5-0. Iraq’s association posted the starting XI with Qasem on the left of the four.

France took 9 points, Norway 6, Senegal 3 and a round-of-32 place as one of the eight best third-placed teams. Iraq took none. France’s next match was against Sweden, the country whose youth teams had built Qasem and then lost him in May.
Arnold Split the Pitch by Language
Arnold, who had taken Australia to the 2022 round of 16, kept telling his squad the group was a chance, not a sentence. Before the finals he said Iraq would play without fear, shock the world, and enjoy it, because the pressure sat with France, Norway and Senegal.
I’m big on making them believe we’re capable of doing something that will shock the world and I truly believe that at this World Cup it will happen.
Graham Arnold, Iraq head coach, before the Norway match
The squad mixed a domestic core with Europe-raised players, including Zidane Iqbal, Ali Al-Hamadi, Amir Al-Ammari, Kevin Yakob and Hussein Ali, the last three of whom had already left the Swedish system for Iraq. Arnold said the foreign-based players wanted to make Iraq and their parents proud, and that he had found the group eating at separate tables on day one, Iraqis at some, “the foreign boys” at others, until he made them sit together.
On the field he grouped English speakers on one flank and Arabic speakers on the other, with bilingual players in the middle so the two sides could talk. Qasem, raised in Sweden and paid in Nashville, belonged to the English-speaking lane. The split did not produce a point. Iraq’s only tournament goal was Hussein’s header in Foxborough.
A U22 Slot, an Open Cup and a World Cup Shirt
Nashville had signed through the 2027 season on February 18, 2025, with a club option for 2028, taking Qasem from IF Elfsborg as a U22 Initiative player on an international roster slot. General manager Mike Jacobs called him a dynamic attacker who could create and finish, and who could play more than one role.
The club listed 87 Elfsborg appearances, 11 goals and 13 assists, including Europa League nights against Tottenham Hotspur, Athletic Club, Roma, Nice, Braga and Galatasaray. He debuted for Nashville on February 22, 2025, against New England and scored his first goal on March 8 against Portland. In 2025 MLS he played 29 games, scored twice and added one assist, and he won the U.S. Open Cup.
THE FILE ARNOLD BOUGHT
- Sweden youth: 3 under-17 caps and 2 goals, 10 under-19 caps and 3 goals, 5 under-21 caps.
- Club path: Motala AIF to Elfsborg in 2021, then Nashville in February 2025 as a U22.
- World Cup week: 6 Iraq caps and 0 goals by late August, 3 of those caps at the finals.
- 2026 MLS line: 2 goals, 1 assist and 11 starts before the late-summer bench run.
For MLS the shirt was inventory. The league sent a record 45 players to the 2026 rosters, and Qasem was the one in Group I with Iraq. For Nashville he was still a U22 on the books when he walked into a group with Mbappé, Haaland and Sadio Mané.
He Has Not Started Since the Monterrey Goal
The World Cup did not hand him Nashville’s attacking XI. On August 13 he started in Leagues Cup play against Monterrey and scored after 20 seconds, then the club went back to using him late. He started against León on August 6, then came off the bench at New York Red Bulls on August 20, at home against Cincinnati on August 30, at New York City FC on September 5, and at Toronto on September 9.
The Cincinnati cameo was the sharp one. He entered in the closing minutes of a 4-0 win and ran onto a break to score at 90+6. On September 9 Nashville lost 2-1 at Toronto and still sat first in the East; Qasem replaced Elias Saad in the 67th minute. Iraqi tracking accounts now treat him as a closer, which matches the club usage, and the Senegal thread had already wanted a different forward in Arnold’s XI when the group was slipping away.
He is 23, under contract through 2027, and the World Cup tape is 123 minutes long. The bet was the roster spot. The group cashed it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where Were Ahmed Qasem’s Iraqi Papers Completed?
Iraq’s football association said the last of his identity documents were finished at the Iraqi consulate in Michigan, in the United States, in the days before the FIFA file moved. That paperwork sat on top of his mother’s Iraqi birth and his own Swedish birth certificate from Motala.
How Did Iraq Qualify for the 2026 World Cup?
Iraq won Path 2 of the inter-confederation play-off, beating Bolivia 2-1 in Monterrey on March 31, 2026, for a first finals place since Mexico 1986. Arnold said the travel to that game was brutal and still told the players not to use it as an excuse.
What Foot Does Ahmed Qasem Use, and How Tall Is He?
He is listed as left-footed, 1.83 m (6 ft) and about 73 kg, and he plays as an attacking midfielder or winger. Nashville logged him as a midfielder on the signing sheet and MLS listed him as a forward on the World Cup call-up card.
Did Sweden Reach the 2026 Knockout Round?
Sweden finished third in Group F and met France in the round of 32, the pairing that came out of Group I. Qasem had already used his one-time switch, so that Sweden side was closed to him before the tournament started.
On September 9 he came on in Toronto in the 67th minute, and Nashville lost 2-1. The U22 slot is still his. The World Cup minutes are already on the sheet.
