Alisson’s Juventus Snub Leaves Liverpool a One-Year Puzzle
Alisson Becker rejected Juventus for one more Liverpool year, a hold that left Turin waiting and the Reds buying a teenage successor.
Alisson Becker turned down a three-year Juventus offer in June and will see out his Liverpool contract to 30 June 2027. Liverpool had already triggered a 12-month option in March, so the paper was in place before Turin came calling.
The stay froze the No. 1 shirt for one season. Juventus moved on to a loan keeper. Liverpool then paid around £30 million for an 18-year-old who will not arrive until that contract ends.
Alisson Turned Down a Three-Year Turin Offer
Brazilian football journalist Bruno Andrade described the plan while Alisson was in camp with Brazil. Juventus had approached him in April with a three-year contract. He had been open to Luciano Spalletti’s project, a reunion with the coach he knew from Roma, then chose not to force a sale.
The goalkeeper’s plan is to fulfil the final year of his contract and, throughout the season, he will evaluate whether he will remain with the Reds or leave on a free transfer in the middle of next year.

The call sat apart from the dugout chaos. Arne Slot had been sacked. Andoni Iraola was incoming. Andrade’s account said talks about staying had started before the manager left, so the gloves were not tied to who stood on the touchline.
Federico Chiesa, asked in Italy a few days later, put the same news in plainer words. “From what I hear, he’s staying in England: then we’ll see,” the forward said. “We’re talking about one of the top five goalkeepers in the world.”
Liverpool’s position, passed to Alisson’s camp, was that he would not be sold. He had rejected Juventus in early June after eight years as first choice, with a World Cup still ahead. He played the first half of a 6-2 warmup win over Panama. Brazil were drawn in Group C against Morocco, Haiti and Scotland.
THE YEAR THAT CLOSED THE EXIT
- 4 August 2021: Alisson signs the long-term deal that still sits underneath the current expiry.
- 14 March 2026: Liverpool trigger a 12-month option that runs to 30 June 2027.
- April 2026: Juventus table a three-year contract and find him receptive.
- 2 June 2026: Andrade reports that he has turned Turin down and will see the season out.
- 21 July 2026: Iraola, still to meet him in person, says he is happy with the goalkeepers he has.
- 1 September 2026: Liverpool sign Lucca Brughmans, 18, and send him back to Genk for the year.
Saudi clubs circled again in July. A source close to Alisson, identified around his agent Ze Maria Ness, said the door was “completely closed.” “We are not talking or negotiating with any club at the moment,” the source said. “Alisson is happy at Liverpool, and Liverpool also wants to rely on him and wants him to stay.”
A Tottenham Loan and a File Still Open
Spalletti had wanted an experienced keeper who already knew Italy. Alisson fitted that brief on a cheap fee, with one year left. When Liverpool would not sell, the shortlist slid toward names who cost money and still might not come.
Emiliano Martinez was willing to talk about a contract through 2029. Aston Villa were not in a mood to cut the price, asking for at least €10 million plus bonuses. Guglielmo Vicario of Tottenham and Vanja Milinkovic-Savic of Napoli were the cheaper reads. Marco Carnesecchi stayed a dream. Zion Suzuki, moving from Parma toward Paris Saint-Germain, was studied as a one-year patch.
HOW TURIN REBUILT THE GLOVES
| Name | Club approach | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| Alisson Becker | Three-year offer, April 2026 | Player stays at Liverpool to 30 June 2027 |
| Emiliano Martinez | Personal terms explored | Villa hold the fee; move dies |
| Guglielmo Vicario | Season-long loan from Tottenham | Arrives mid-August with an option to buy |
| Michele Di Gregorio | Outgoing | Loaned to Bournemouth |
Vicario landed in Turin in mid-August on a private flight from London. Juventus had spent heavily on the attack and treated the gloves as a delay, not a solution. Italian reporting in August still listed Alisson among the names they would reopen next summer, when he can leave for nothing. The 2026 raid failed. The 2027 file did not close.
Liverpool’s Next No. 1 Is 18 and Still in Belgium
Deadline day answered the same calendar from the other side. Liverpool agreed a deal to sign Brughmans from Genk, then sent him home for 2026-27. The club announced a long-term contract signed at the AXA Training Centre. The fee, across several accounts, can reach around £30 million with add-ons, a record for a teenage goalkeeper.
Very happy and grateful. A huge step and an incredible opportunity. I’m proud, excited and looking forward to what lies ahead at this historic club, with the dream of one day wearing the shirt and playing at Anfield.

WHAT THE GENK DEAL ACTUALLY SAYS
- The player: Lucca Brughmans, 18, Belgium Under-19 captain, signed 1 September 2026.
- The path: He returns to Genk for the rest of 2026-27 and is due at Anfield ahead of 2027-28.
- The record: 32 reserve appearances, a senior debut in April 2026, 10 further league games, then all four Genk starts at the beginning of this season.
- The aim: He has already said the long-term intention is to become first choice, step by step.
Speaking after a goalless draw at Anderlecht, Brughmans declined to lay “Liverpool’s plan on the table in its entirety,” then said the intention is to become their first-choice goalkeeper in the long term. He will do everything he can to get there, which is why he is back at Genk. The coaches of both clubs, he added, are in contact about his condition, and Liverpool staff come to watch his matches.
That is the second-order cost of the June hold. A new Alisson contract would have told the market the gloves were taken past 2027. Buying an 18-year-old who lands when the present deal dies tells it the opposite. The club protected 2026-27. It also started the clock on the summer after it.
Where That Leaves Giorgi Mamardashvili
Giorgi Mamardashvili was signed from Valencia to be the next No. 1. He played plenty in 2025-26 because Alisson kept getting hurt, and he did not close the argument. Nottingham Forest asked about him in August. Liverpool kept him. Brughmans was on standby to come early if the Georgian had left before the deadline.
Iraola’s first public cut of the group named four men. Alisson, Mamardashvili, Freddie Woodman, who played late last season when both of the others were out, and Armin Pecsi, who was being sent on loan. Vitezslav Jaros is in the same department, coming back from a serious knee injury. That is not a succession plan. It is a holding pattern with a teenager parked in Belgium.
If Alisson walks next summer, Mamardashvili and Brughmans meet in the same doorway. If Alisson signs again, the Georgian’s path shrinks for a second time. The June stay did not only block Juventus. It parked the deputy in a year with no clean way through.
138 Clean Sheets Put Him Fourth at Anfield
The football since the hold has been ordinary in volume and still useful in the ledger. Alisson has started Liverpool’s first three Premier League matches and the Champions League night against Atletico Madrid, a 2-1 win at Anfield on 9 September. The league column after three games is one win, two draws, five points, sixth in the table.
ALISSON IN THE LEAGUE, THIS SEASON AND LAST
| Season | Premier League starts | Clean sheets | Goals conceded | Saves |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025-26 | 26 | 8 | 31 | 57 |
| 2026-27 | 3 | 1 | 4 | 9 |
The shutout came on 4 September, a 2-0 win at Ipswich. That night he reached 336 appearances and 138 clean sheets for the club and moved into fourth place on the clean-sheet list, one above Elisha Scott’s 137. Ray Clemence is out of sight on 323, then Bruce Grobbelaar on 267 and Pepe Reina on 177. The club also put an August stop on the Premier League Save of the Month shortlist.
He joined from Roma on 19 July 2018 for £65 million, a world-record fee for a goalkeeper at the time, and he is 33, born on 2 October 1992. The ranking is a history note. It is not a new contract.
Hamstring Trouble Already Wrote Last Season’s Warning
Availability is the part of the bet that does not show up in a June quote. Last season he missed hamstring problems that wiped out 26 games across four separate layoffs and 122 days. A hamstring from 1 October to 19 November 2025 took 50 days and 12 matches. Another from 20 March to 20 May 2026 took 62 days and 12 more. In between came a short illness and a six-day unidentified problem.
The full 2025-26 line was 35 appearances and 13 clean sheets in all competitions, including those 26 league starts. When he played he was still the keeper Liverpool trust. When he did not, Mamardashvili had to make the case and did not finish it. Iraola inherits that split, not a settled hierarchy.
Woodman already had to play in April. That is why the Brughmans deal, odd as a £30 million loan-back looks in September, is a 2027 insurance policy as much as a talent raid. A 33-year-old with that hamstring file and one year on the paper is a starter you keep. He is also a starter you plan around.
Andoni Iraola Has the Gloves for One Season
Iraola had not met Alisson or Alexis Mac Allister in person in July because of World Cup duty, but he had spoken with both. He was in Chicago with the rest of the squad. Alisson, Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo stayed on Merseyside and were due back at the AXA Training Centre.
I am very happy with the situation we have right now in the goalkeeping area. We have Alisson, we have Giorgi. Now we are going to send Armin on loan but we have the guarantee of the three keepers here. Freddie played some games last season, I think it is a guarantee for us. Alisson is also someone in a changing room that has lots of references, in terms of experience. He is someone that definitely will help us in this process of adaptation of the new signings and the young players. We need the references like Virgil, Alisson, Joe Gomez; players that have been here for a long time, and I am sure we will have this help.
Andoni Iraola, Liverpool head coach, Chicago press conference
That is the case for the hold in one speech: a veteran in a new dressing room, a deputy already on the books, a third keeper who has played. It is also a speech that does not mention 2028. The evaluation Andrade wrote down in June is still the live mechanism. Alisson plays 2026-27. He then decides whether to sign or walk.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The paper: Liverpool triggered the option in March; the deal ends on 30 June 2027.
- The stay: He turned down Juventus and shut the Saudi door in July.
- The successor bet: Brughmans is already signed and scheduled to arrive when that deal dies.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- A new contract: No fresh Alisson terms have been announced.
- Turin’s next bid: Vicario is the 2026-27 starter; Alisson remains on the 2027 list.
- The deputy: Mamardashvili stayed in August, with no public promise past this season.
Brughmans, back in Belgium, has already said the long-term intention is to become first choice. Alisson’s own answer is due next summer, with the contract still dated 30 June 2027.
