Bolton’s Wembley Captain Stays in League One at Luton

George Johnston has started every League One game Luton Town have played since the club signed the defender who captained Bolton Wanderers to Wembley. Bolton released him two days after a 4-1 play-off final win over Stockport County on 24 May 2026, and he stayed in the third tier with the side that had just missed the play-offs.

Jack Wilshere made him the first summer arrival at Kenilworth Road, on a free transfer and a deal of undisclosed length. The 28-year-old is already in the team. Luton sit seventh after five matches. Johnston has not missed a league minute.

Two Days After Wembley, Bolton Posted the Retained List

Sunday 24 May was supposed to close a five-year chapter on a high. Johnston wore the armband at Wembley as Bolton beat Stockport and went up. He had been the longest-serving senior player on the books, a fixture at centre-back since he arrived from Feyenoord in June 2021.

On 26 May the club confirmed he would leave as a free agent. George Johnston, Kyle Dempsey and Jordi Osei-Tutu had not been offered new contracts, Bolton said, and Carlos Mendes Gomes was released with them. Loan forwards and wingers who had helped the promotion were sent back to their parent clubs the same day.

The public note landed about 48 hours after the trophy. People close to the dressing room already treated the exit as settled before the final, and Johnston still played the 90 minutes. The Captain Who Stayed in League One

Luton finished 7th in 2025-26, with a 21-11-14 league record, 68 goals scored and 56 conceded. Sixth would have been a play-off place. They lifted the Vertu Trophy at Wembley and still spent another year in the third tier. Johnston, who had just won the right to leave that tier, walked back into it.

He had already seen Kenilworth Road from the away side. Bolton drew 1-1 there during the league season, and he liked the noise. After the deal was done he said Luton had been at the front of his mind as soon as he knew Bolton was over, even though other options appeared.

That January turn coincided with Wilshere’s first months in the job. The former Arsenal and England midfielder was appointed on 13 October 2025, his first full-time post, after Matt Bloomfield’s exit. From that point Luton played 43 games under him last season, with a 22-11-10 record. Johnston was signing up for a second tilt at the same league, under a manager still building a dressing room in his own image.

Why Johnston Chose a Club That Missed the Play-Offs

Wilshere had watched him in person. Luton knew the profile: left-sided centre-back, Scotland youth caps, a voice in a back line. Once Bolton made the retained list public, the Hatters moved. The club presented him as the first new face to join the Hatters this summer, and the manager did not dress it up as a squad extra.

Jordan Clark and Liam Walsh had already signed new deals. Kasey Palmer, who scored eight times in 20 league games on loan last spring, followed on 4 July for £500,000 from Hull City. He said he wanted to keep learning under Wilshere. That is a polite way of describing a step that, on paper, looks like a demotion. Bolton were going to the Championship. Luton were not. He still picked Bedfordshire.

JOHNSTON’S LEAGUE ONE STARTS FOR LUTON

The Stockport result is the detail that sticks. Three months after he helped beat them 4-1 in a play-off final, he lined up against the same club in a Luton shirt and won again. Mansfield, 5-2 the other way, showed the other edge of this league. Wilshere’s side can score. They can also be opened up. A centre-back who played 50 games in that last Bolton season is being asked to hold that line every Saturday.

Luton visit Stevenage on 10 September, a 20:00 BST kick-off moved for television. If the pattern holds, Johnston will start that one too.

Hearts, Bradford and the Offers He Passed

He was not short of suitors once the retained list landed. Close-season reports put Heart of Midlothian, then Scottish Premiership runners-up, in the mix, along with Bradford City, Blackpool, Plymouth Argyle, Sheffield Wednesday and MK Dons. Several of those clubs were building for the Championship or for a play-off push. Luton, who had just fallen short of that push, still won the race.

Johnston’s own account is that Luton sat at the front of that list from the start. Wilshere’s version is that tracking began months earlier, from the night they played each other, and the priority stamp went on once Bolton stepped away. The Championship clubs did not get him. The newly promoted club he had just led up did not keep him. League One Luton did.

Liverpool, Feyenoord and One Blank Season

Manchester-born, he came through Liverpool’s academy from 2008 to 2019 and never made a senior appearance for the first team. Feyenoord took him for 2019-20. He played four Eredivisie matches. Kal Naismith, the Luton captain, watched the play-off final and then watched him in pre-season and early league games. His verdict was short.

Naismith told club media in August that Johnston was “a solid, proper Luton player,” the sort who “throws himself into duels” and “just turn[s] up every week.” He said he knew it as soon as the signing was done. That is the local test, and it is the one Wilshere is using too: less about the Championship he is not in, more about whether the new centre-back looks like one of theirs.

The move still reads as Wilshere’s promotion bet from June, only now with five league starts attached. Luton get a free, Wembley-winning defender who already knows this division. Bolton go into the Championship without the skipper who held the trophy. Johnston, who could have gone with them or taken one of the other calls, is still lining up in League One.

Stevenage is next, on 10 September. The armband has changed. The league has not.
