Barcelona Lost Bernardo Silva After Asking Him to Wait
Barcelona had Bernardo Silva on a cheaper depth deal, then asked him to wait. Real Madrid paid the commissions and signed him free until 2028.
Real Madrid announced Bernardo Silva on a free two-year deal on June 17, four days after Barcelona believed the midfielder was already theirs. The club statement put him under contract for two seasons, until June 30, 2028.
The raid copy from mid-June framed a snatch. The file underneath is slower and colder. Barcelona had a deal for a cheaper, lesser role, then asked him to wait for a sale, and would not pay what Jorge Mendes wanted. José Mourinho called. Madrid paid. Shirt number 20 is white now.
Barcelona Already Had an Agreement
Javi Giorgetti laid out the Catalan version on June 12, while Silva was still with Portugal at the World Cup. Barcelona had an offer on the table. All sides had lined up a lower wage, a secondary job, and a seat as the fourth or fifth midfielder.
The player wanted Barça, and the club asked him to wait while they tried to close an exit. Everything was almost done.
Javi Giorgetti, June 12, 2026
Then Atlético Madrid arrived with a starting role and better pay, and Silva started to listen. Real Madrid followed with still better pay and a starting role of its own. Giorgetti’s line on the gap was blunt. Other clubs were offering a starter. Barcelona was offering a fifth option.
For the sporting department, that ranking was the point of the file. Deco would not pay a luxury substitute as if he were the face of the team, and would not push Silva’s wage above several players already on the books. Mendes had brought the name in as a market chance, a free agent who would take less. Once Atlético and Madrid raised the floor, Barcelona froze its number and waited for a midfielder to leave.
He had told Barcelona he would sit tight until the World Cup was over. The agreement with Madrid was already in place on June 11. The wait he offered them did not run to the final.
What Jorge Mendes Asked That Barcelona Refused
Market sources close to the operation, in an exclusive published June 15, put the extras Madrid accepted at €10 million net to the player (about $11.5 million) and a similar sum to Mendes and Silva’s father. The wage sat near another €10 million a year. Barcelona and Atlético both declined those commissions, and both declined the tax risk that came with dating the deal around Spanish residency rules.
THE THREE OFFERS IN JUNE
| Club | Role on offer | Upfront extras | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Barcelona | Fourth or fifth midfielder, lower wage | Would not pay the commissions | Asked him to wait, then lost him |
| Atlético Madrid | Starting role, higher wage | Would not pay the commissions | Dropped out |
| Real Madrid | Starting role, wage near €10 million | €10 million net to Silva, similar to Mendes and his father | Signed June 17 |
Mendes has a long working relationship with Mourinho. That is not a side note in this file. The same people who would not write the extra cheques were also being asked to trust a structure Spanish tax inspectors have already fined at other clubs, when wages were routed through agents. Madrid wrote the cheques. The other two did not.
A free transfer is free only for the selling club. Manchester City’s contract had expired, so City received nothing. The money still moved, from Madrid to the player and to the people around him.
Mourinho Closed the Window in 36 Hours
Fabrizio Romano reported the close on June 11 as a fast deal closed in 36 hours, with the contract approved and Mourinho the man who wanted him. Madrid’s new coach had been confirmed only days earlier. Advanced talks that week were, in Romano’s wording, fully confirmed.
Accounts close to the club said Mourinho contacted Silva in person and that talks with Barcelona and Atlético went on hold after that call. The sequence is short enough to put on a calendar.
HOW THE FILE MOVED IN JUNE
- May 29, 2026: League sources say Barcelona, back on 1:1 rules, still cannot register Anthony Gordon, Julián Alvarez and Silva unless it sells to raise between €30 million and €50 million.
- June 11, 2026: Romano reports Madrid’s deal done in 36 hours. Domestic rivals stop improving their bids.
- June 12, 2026: Giorgetti describes Barcelona’s almost-done depth deal and the request that Silva wait for an exit.
- June 15, 2026: The commission figures land. Barcelona and Atlético are described as having refused them.
- June 17, 2026: Real Madrid publishes the two-year agreement through June 30, 2028.
Florentino Pérez, re-elected as president through 2030, was restocking a squad that finished the 2025-26 season eight points behind Barcelona and went out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals. Marc Cucurella arrived from Chelsea in the same week. Ibrahima Konaté, another free agent, was on the same track. Silva was the midfield piece Mourinho asked for, and he said yes.
The Contract Madrid Put on Paper Until 2028
City had announced in the spring that the 31-year-old would leave when his deal expired. Nine years at the Etihad produced 460 appearances, 76 goals, six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, five League Cups and a Champions League. He captained City in his last season and played all 38 league matches as they finished second and still won the League Cup and the FA Cup.
THE MADRID DEAL ON PAPER
- Fee to City: None. The Manchester City contract had expired.
- Length: Two seasons, until June 30, 2028, plus a one-year option the sides can agree to take up.
- Shirt: Number 20, confirmed when he signed in the boardroom at Ciudad Real Madrid.
- Who was in the room: Pérez and honorary president José Martínez Pirri, at a private ceremony on August 19.
He had already played by then. The welcoming event lagged the football, because he went to the World Cup first and because Madrid now holds these ceremonies behind closed doors. He left with a jersey with his name and the number 20 in a room that did not include a public crowd.
Four Liga Matches and a Fitness Warning
His first minutes in white came on August 8 in Budapest, 48 of them after half-time in a 2-1 friendly win over Ferencvaros. He told the club channel he was happy to have debuted and that the week had been hard. Mourinho was less gentle about the holiday.
Bernardo is a very important player. He is the type of player who completely switches off mentally, and does not do anything during the holiday period, and he came back with much lower physical fitness, and it needs to be developed.
José Mourinho, Real Madrid head coach, after Ferencvaros
Mourinho started him deeper, in the 6 or 8, then moved him to the 10 when the legs were not there. The Liga start followed the same idea. He began the first two league games as a defensive midfielder, 79 minutes in a 2-1 win at Espanyol on August 22 and 85 in a 4-1 home win over Real Sociedad on August 26, then came off the bench for 14 minutes against Málaga and 27 at Real Betis.
Match logs hosted on FBref record four La Liga matches and 205 minutes, with no goal and no assist in that opening stretch. Alfredo Relaño said this month that Silva and Arda Güler are the two Madrid players best placed to organize the team’s play. Mourinho, on a separate track, has told Endrick he does not see Silva or Fede Valverde as right-wing options, which is why the Brazilian’s minutes are being sketched at striker and on the right.
Selection notes around September 9 listed Silva among midfielders unavailable for the next Champions League date, with his first European night in white pushed toward October. Predrag Mijatovic, speaking on El Larguero, still wanted an orchestra director in that group, a job he said could have been Rodri’s. Madrid signed a versatile attacker who can play several midfield seats. It did not sign a holding pivot.
Why Barcelona’s 1:1 Recovery Could Not Hold Him
Barcelona had climbed back onto La Liga’s 1:1 spending rules, the right to spend a euro for each euro it generates. League sources still told the club in late May that Gordon, Alvarez and Silva would not all fit unless someone left. The sales target sat between €30 million and €50 million, depending on which of those files actually closed.
THREE NAMES, ONE SALARY SHEET
- Anthony Gordon: First summer arrival, already eating registration room before Silva’s contract was live.
- Julián Alvarez: The striker file that needed the same wage space Silva was being asked to occupy as depth.
- Bernardo Silva: A free agent who still counted against the cap, and who was being priced as a fourth or fifth midfielder.
Gordon was already on that sheet, and the club later pointed to Gordon’s World Cup run for the fee as proof the outlay was sound. The same arithmetic then framed the Alvarez deadline against that spending limit. Silva, the one who would have arrived with no fee to City, was the name they tried to park in the leftover gap. The leftover gap was not a starter’s wage, and it was not Mendes’s commission.
That is the bill from the lean years, arriving on a player who had already agreed to take less. Barcelona kept its scale. Madrid bought the extra lines on the invoice and handed him a seat Mourinho would actually use. The Portuguese who had been willing to wait through a World Cup for a fifth-choice job in blaugrana now has 205 early Liga minutes in white, and a contract that runs to 2028.
Frequently Asked Questions
When did Manchester City confirm Bernardo Silva was leaving?
City announced the 31-year-old’s departure in April 2026, once it was clear he would not renew, so the move to Madrid was always going to be a free transfer with no fee payable to the Premier League club.
Why did Madrid date the signing after the June agreement?
Sources close to the deal said the club delayed the formal incorporation toward July so Silva would stay under the 183-day Spanish tax-residency line for 2026 and keep the 24% rate he had in England, rather than the 45% IRPF band that would have applied if he had been resident sooner.
What else did he receive at the August 19 ceremony?
After he signed in the boardroom, the club gave him a replica of the stadium and a watch, along with the number 20 shirt, with only Pérez, Pirri and family in attendance under Madrid’s closed-door presentation rule for the season.
How many times had he played for Portugal when he signed?
At the June announcement he had 109 Portugal caps and two Nations League titles, and he was already in the World Cup squad, so the club was buying a player in the middle of a tournament rather than one waiting at home.
Shirt 20 has been used as a central midfielder, not as the wide extra Barcelona priced, and the contract on the boardroom table still runs to June 30, 2028.
