Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid Return Wins a Messy Inter Night
Perez bet his presidency and €260 million on Mourinho. Madrid have nine Liga points and a 2-1 Inter win, without the control the coach wanted.
Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid beat Inter 2-1 at the Bernabeu on September 8, three months after Florentino Perez brought him back on a contract through June 30, 2029. The Portuguese coach has the early points Perez paid for. He does not yet have the control he asked for.
Madrid sit third in La Liga with nine points from four games and have already banked a European win. Barcelona have 12 points and a plus-15 goal difference. The gap is the invoice on a wager Perez made personal.
Perez Put His Presidency on a Three-Year Bet
The board, meeting on Thursday, June 11, with Perez in the chair, named Mourinho head coach on a three-year deal until June 2029. He was due at Valdebebas on July 13, the first day of pre-season, 13 years after he left the club.
Perez drove this one. Xabi Alonso’s appointment a year earlier had gone through general manager Jose Angel Sanchez and then to the president for a signature. Mourinho was Perez’s coach from late April, when Madrid were already sliding toward a second straight season with no major trophy.
The last time that happened was 2009-10. Perez hired Mourinho then, too.
An election got in the way of a cheaper exit. A break clause of about €6 million in Mourinho’s Benfica deal ran for 10 working days after their season and lapsed on May 29. Madrid did not trigger it. Perez had called a presidential vote, and the club waited. Once he won on June 7, Madrid paid the full €15 million release fee.
THE RETURN CALENDAR
- Late April 2026: Perez settles on Mourinho while Madrid are still in a title race they will not win.
- May 29, 2026: The cheaper Benfica break clause expires unused.
- June 7, 2026: Perez wins the presidential vote and the path to the €15 million clause opens.
- June 9, 2026: Benfica tells Portugal’s market regulator that Madrid will pay the clause, and names Marco Silva as the replacement.
- June 11, 2026: Real Madrid confirm the appointment through June 30, 2029.
- July 13, 2026: Mourinho starts work on the first day of pre-season.
He was 63 when the deal was struck. Alvaro Arbeloa, who had finished the 2025-26 season after Alonso was sacked in January, agreed to leave in the days before the announcement. Madrid had gone two campaigns without a major trophy. Perez did not want a third.
€260 Million for a Squad Built to Win Now
The other half of the wager was the market. Madrid put about €260 million ($300 million) into six signings and the Benfica clause, their biggest summer outlay since 2019, and they gave Mourinho a say in summer recruitment that Carlo Ancelotti, Alonso and Arbeloa did not get.
The profile shifted with him. A year earlier the club had signed Dean Huijsen, 20, Alvaro Carreras, 22, Franco Mastantuono, 18, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, 26, an average age of 21 years and six months. This summer the headline arrivals were Marc Cucurella, 27, Bernardo Silva, 31, Ibrahima Konate, 27, and Denzel Dumfries, 30. That group averages 28 years and nine months. Mourinho was not building a team for 2029. He was building one that could win in May.
THE SIX ARRIVALS
| Player | From | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Yan Diomande | RB Leipzig | Up to €140 million |
| Marc Cucurella | Chelsea | €55 million plus €5 million in add-ons |
| Carlos Espi | Levante | €25 million |
| Denzel Dumfries | Inter | €20 million |
| Ibrahima Konate | Liverpool | Free |
| Bernardo Silva | Manchester City | Free |
Diomande, 19, is the swing player in that list, a right-sided winger signed after the World Cup in a deal that can become a club record. Konate and Dumfries were lined up before the election to cover the holes left by David Alaba and Dani Carvajal. Cucurella arrived even though Madrid already had Carreras, Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia, who later left for Betis in a €4 million deal with a 50 percent sell-on.
Gonzalo Garcia’s €40 million move to Fulham, now run by Arbeloa, opened the door for Espi, the backup No. 9 Mourinho wanted. Vinicius Junior staying on a contract to 2032 was treated inside the club as another signing. The piece Perez and Mourinho did not get was a midfielder who can set the tempo. Talks with Rodri opened after Spain won the World Cup, then died when he chose Barcelona.
WHAT HE ASKED FOR IN JUNE
- Right-back cover: Dumfries arrived from Inter as a more defensive option beside Alexander-Arnold.
- A left-back to push Carreras: Cucurella joined from Chelsea within days of the plan being set.
- A dominant centre-back: Konate came on a free after Liverpool let his deal run out.
- A creative midfielder: Bernardo Silva arrived on a free; Rodri did not.
Club voices still talk about a missing controller. Rodri’s move to Barcelona left that hole open, and Madrid told the squad the 25 senior Liga spots were full. Mourinho would have liked one more centre-back and one more midfielder. He did not get them.
The Liga Start Died on a Saved Penalty
The first group in at Valdebebas then went and won three Liga games on the bounce, something Mourinho never did in his first spell. Espi scored in added time in a 1-2 win at Espanyol on August 22. Kylian Mbappe hit a hat-trick in a 4-1 home win over Real Sociedad. Jude Bellingham and Mbappe ran the 4-0 against Malaga on August 30. Nine points from nine. In 2010-11 he took seven from the first nine. In 2011-12 Levante beat him on matchday three. In 2012-13 he took four from nine.
Friday, September 4, in Seville ended the run. Troy Parrott, who once played for Mourinho at Tottenham, scored in the 81st minute from a rebound after Thibaut Courtois had saved Nelson Deossa’s header. Espi’s overhead kick was ruled out for offside. Mbappe then had a stoppage-time penalty saved by Alvaro Valles after a long VAR check for encroachment that did not produce a retake.
Mourinho said he could not explain the defeat. “Sometimes you lose and you don’t know why,” he told the press room. “Congratulations to Betis, who played to draw and ended up hitting the jackpot.” He later asked why the penalty was not retaken. Madrid had 20 shots to 10 and 59 percent of the ball. They left with nothing.
MADRID AFTER FOUR LIGA GAMES
- Record: Three wins, one loss, nine points, third in the table.
- Goals: 10 scored, 3 conceded, the same for-and-against as Alaves, who have 10 points.
- The gap: Barcelona have 12 points from four wins and have scored 17.
- The start he never had: Nine from nine in the first three, then the first blank of the spell.
Betis climbed level on nine points. Fran Garcia, sold to them weeks earlier, was on the other side of that result. The saved penalty is the night the “win now” squad first looked like last year’s team: a lot of the ball, a lot of shots, no prize.
Why Mourinho Called Inter a Crazy Game
Four days later came the Champions League opener against Inter, the club Mourinho took to the 2010 title at this same stadium. Mbappe scored in the 14th minute after Brahim Diaz punished a mistake by Yann Bisseck, his 71st goal in the competition, level with Raul in fifth on the all-time list. Valverde made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute by stealing the ball from goalkeeper Josep Martinez. Carlos Augusto pulled one back in the 77th. Madrid held on, 2-1.
Courtois kept them in it from the third minute, when he denied Marcus Thuram, through an 89th-minute stop from Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Jones hit the bar. Martinez denied Mbappe, Bellingham and Diaz at the other end. Parts of the home crowd whistled Vinicius when he went off late, and there were boos for Mbappe when he was withdrawn. Mourinho kissed Mbappe on the way off and refused to police the stands.
It was a crazy game, and I don’t like that kind of madness. I prefer to score 5, 6, or 7 but with absolute control and without needing an absolutely incredible performance from the goalkeeper.
José Mourinho, Real Madrid head coach, Bernabeu press room, September 8, 2026
He added that he does not like that kind of madness, that whoever voted the player of the match and skipped Courtois “must have been asleep,” and that Valverde’s goal was “a great interpretation of the structure.” He also said he could not do the things he wanted to do as a coach. Intensity dropped before Inter’s goal. Alexander-Arnold, used in a role that asked him to defend space he does not usually occupy, “had nothing left to give.”
On Vinicius he drew a line under the noise without pretending the winger is in peak form. “He’s not at his best, and we all see that. He’s the first to know it and is working very hard to be the player who decides matches.” He said the peak version of Vinicius “kills the game like he did against Benfica,” and that a player who has given everything is not obliged to give more. A clip of the pair after the Betis loss was pushed around as a snub. The simpler read is a tired winger and a coach who has already decided the public row is a trap.
The night was the bet in miniature. Perez paid for a coach who wins ugly. Mourinho won. He then spent the press conference explaining why that is not enough.
He Left a 100-Point Season Here Once
The map Perez is using is the first spell, from 2010 to 2013. Mourinho won three trophies in three years and never got past a Champions League semi-final. The middle season is the one still hanging in the building.
THE THREE TROPHIES HE ALREADY WON HERE
- Copa del Rey, 2010-11: Cristiano Ronaldo’s extra-time header beat Barcelona 1-0 in the final at Mestalla.
- La Liga, 2011-12: A record 100 points and 121 goals, nine points clear of Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona, 32 wins and 16 away wins.
- Spanish Super Cup, 2012: Madrid lost 3-2 at Camp Nou, won 2-1 at home, and took the cup on away goals.
Across 178 games he won 128, drew 28 and lost 22, a 71.91 percent win rate. He spent about €187.5 million on 13 signings in that spell, with Luka Modric at €35 million the largest fee. The third season curdled. Iker Casillas was dropped. The dressing room split. Perez and Mourinho parted by mutual agreement after a 2013 Copa final loss to Atletico Madrid, and the club then won four Champions Leagues in five seasons under other coaches with a core Mourinho had helped shape.
That is the hopeful reading of the bet: the Portuguese as the man who puts a hard edge on a gifted squad, then leaves the silverware to whoever comes next. The less hopeful reading is year three. He has been back two and a half months, by his own count, with some of the new players in for less than a month. He said Inter are “a perfect team to achieve great things” and that he is “at the beginning of my work.”
What Benfica Got for Losing Mourinho
Lisbon did not linger. Minutes after telling the CMVM that Madrid would pay the €15 million clause, Benfica named Marco Silva, 48, on a deal through 2027-28 that stretches by a year if he wins the league. President Rui Costa said Silva’s release clause is also €15 million. Silva had just left Fulham after five years.
Mourinho’s second spell at Benfica, which began in September 2025 after he left Fenerbahce, finished unbeaten in the Primeira Liga and still third, eight points behind Porto, with 11 draws in 34 games. Benfica also had to navigate the Champions League play-off, where Madrid knocked them out. Costa said the club can live a year without the Champions League and still spend. The €15 million helped.

The next European night on Madrid’s list is Roma away on October 14, then Leipzig at home. Mourinho said before Inter that he could talk about playing well, “but I don’t want to play well like we did against Betis and lose; I want to win.” He has the Inter points. He still wants the version of this team that scores five with the game in a vice. Perez bet that a 63-year-old who already did this job would get there before Barcelona run away. The table, after four Liga games and one wild European night, has not decided that yet.
