Nashville Leads by Nine as the East Table Flips

Nashville SC leads the MLS Eastern Conference on 53 points, nine clear of Inter Miami after the World Cup pause scrambled the rest of the table. Philadelphia Union had seven points and last place when the league stopped. They are eighth now, unbeaten in nine, and they just beat FC Cincinnati 5-0.

Red Bull New York sat fifth at the break and were sold as the surprise of the spring. They are 12th. The pause did not dethrone Nashville. It inverted everyone chasing them.

The East Table Flipped After July

Most clubs have played 24 of 34 regular-season games. Ten remain for the sides on that mark, 11 for Chicago, Cincinnati and D.C. United. The July snapshot put Nashville on 33 points, Miami on 31, Chicago on 26 and New England on 25, with Red Bull New York fifth on 22 and Philadelphia last on 7.

The points since then tell a different race. Philadelphia added 23. Nashville added 20 and stayed first. Charlotte added 18 and Orlando 17. Miami and Chicago each added 13, which is why a two-point East gap in July is a nine-point gap now. Red Bull New York added five.

HOW THE EAST MOVED AFTER THE BREAK

League rules send the top seven from each conference straight into a Round One best-of-3. Seeds 8 and 9 play a one-game wild card. Decision Day is November 7, wild-card night is November 18, and MLS Cup is December 18. The clubs that used July and August well are already on the right side of that cut. The ones that did not have about 10 games to climb back.

Philadelphia Climbed 23 Points in Nine Games

Last season the Union won the Supporters’ Shield with 66 points and 20 victories under Bradley Carnell. This winter they lost fullback Kai Wagner to Birmingham City, striker Tai Baribo to D.C. United and center back Jakob Glesnes to LA Galaxy. On May 27, with the club last in the 30-team league on seven points from 15 games, they fired Carnell and named Ryan Richter interim coach.

The restart gave Richter a team that had already hit bottom. Since play resumed they have not lost in the league. On September 9 they finally landed a blow on one of the East’s expected sides, beating Cincinnati 5-0 after Obinna Nwobodo was sent off in the 15th minute.

Quinn Sullivan opened from the spot, then added two assists. His brother Cavan, starting a league game next to him for the first time, had two assists of his own. Bruno Damiani scored a hat trick. Milan Iloski converted a late penalty. The shot count was 18-1. Philadelphia are eighth on 30 points, one behind the 31 that Orlando and Cincinnati share and one above New York City FC.

WHAT LEFT CHESTER LAST WINTER

• Kai Wagner: The left back who ran the Union’s wide play moved to Birmingham City.
• Tai Baribo: The striker who scored 16 in the Shield year joined D.C. United and has kept scoring there.
• Jakob Glesnes: The center back went to LA Galaxy and took a chunk of the back line with him.

That exodus is why seven points in 15 games looked like a collapse rather than a slow start. The nine-game run since the break is the reply. It has not made them a Shield side again. It has put last year’s best regular-season team back in a playoff conversation they had vacated by May.

Summer Stars Changed the Middle of the East

The pause also became a shopping window. Orlando signed Antoine Griezmann from Atlético Madrid on July 13. Charlotte signed Allan Saint-Maximin the same day on a three-year deal. Chicago had already landed Robert Lewandowski. Inter Miami added Casemiro from Manchester United. Those names did not catch Nashville. They did rewrite the middle of the conference, which is where stars who have reshaped the East now decide who gets a home playoff series and who plays a wild card.

THE SUMMER IMPORTS

• Antoine Griezmann: Seven goals and three assists in nine MLS games, including six goals in his last four, have dragged Orlando from 12th to sixth.
• Robert Lewandowski: Six goals in nine MLS games, the latest a 10th-minute finish against Miami in front of 63,094 at Soldier Field.
• Allan Saint-Maximin: No goals and two assists so far, and he had a hand in both Charlotte strikes in a 2-1 win at Montréal on September 9.
• Casemiro: Headed the equalizer from a Lionel Messi corner in Chicago, his third headed goal in three games.

Griezmann scored a goal on his Orlando debut in a 4-0 win at San Jose, then scored the brace that carried the Lions into a playoff spot for the first time this season. On September 9 he scored twice more in a 3-2 win at Atlanta United, his fourth straight game with a goal. Orlando are unbeaten in four and sit sixth on 31 points, even with a minus-15 goal difference, because nine wins beat Cincinnati’s eight in the tiebreak.

Lewandowski Fills Soldier Field

Chicago’s night against Miami was the league’s advertisement for those signings. Lewandowski, 38, volleyed Andrew Gutman’s cross after 10 minutes. Messi, 39, played the full 90, put four shots on target, and whipped in the corner Casemiro headed in at 48 minutes. The assist was Messi’s 13th of the season to go with 18 goals, making him the first player with 30-plus goal contributions in three separate MLS seasons.

The assist, it was nice to get on it, but the finish was amazing. It’s kind of easy when you just put it in a spot and Lewandowski does the rest.

The Fire are averaging 41,815 across three league matches at Soldier Field with Lewandowski on the roster, up from 19,668 over eight dates before he arrived. They are fourth on 39 points from 23 games, a match in hand on New England and Charlotte, and they have been drawing too often to close Nashville. A packed house and a first-time finish from eight meters still left them five points behind Miami and 14 behind the leaders.

Charlotte used Saint-Maximin in a quieter way. Idan Toklomati’s 81st-minute winner at Stade Saputo made it 2-1, and the Crown have lost once in their last 11 league games. They are fifth on 39 points, level with Chicago, and they look like a Round One side without needing a Golden Boot candidate. Pep Biel’s seven goals and six assists before the break already gave Dean Smith a creator. Saint-Maximin gave him another wide threat.

Red Bull New York Dropped From Fifth to 12th

No club wasted the pause more clearly. Michael Bradley’s side announced themselves with an opening-weekend win at Orlando and spent the spring in the top five on the backs of 18-year-old forward Julian Hall and 17-year-old midfielder Adri Mehmeti. Hall still has nine league goals. Mehmeti has a goal and five assists in 22 appearances. Emil Forsberg has three goals and seven assists. The supporting numbers did not follow.

They have 27 points from 24 games, a minus-16 goal difference, and a 2-0 loss at LAFC on September 9 that left them 12th, three points outside the wild card. Ethan Horvath has conceded 46 goals in 23 starts. The young core that made them must-watch in March is still there. The defensive solidity Bradley wanted after the break is not, and the table has punished that faster than the highlight clips can repair it.

Columbus, Atlanta and Montréal fell with them. The Crew are 13th on 23 points after a coaching change, Wessam Abou Ali’s injury and Diego Rossi’s move to Monterrey. Atlanta are 14th on 22 under Tata Martino’s rebuild. Montréal are last on 21, eight points behind Toronto for the ninth and final playoff place after a 2-1 home loss to Charlotte.

Nashville Still Leads by Nine After Toronto

The one result that should have invited the pack closer did not. On September 9, Toronto came from a fourth-minute Niklas Dorsch own goal to win 2-1 on Dániel Sallói’s 72nd-minute header and Emilio Aristizábal’s strike at 90+3. It was Nashville’s third loss in 24 league matches and their first since a 1-0 defeat to Orlando on July 25.

Hany Mukhtar, the club’s all-time leader with 97 goals and 67 assists, made his 200th MLS start that night. Jack Maher made his 150th regular-season appearance. Josh Sargent, on until the 75th minute, slid wide of a finish that would have been his eighth of the year. Toronto stretched an unbeaten run to seven and moved to 29 points, level with NYCFC on the wild-card line. Nashville still woke up first in the East and first in the Supporters’ Shield, seven points ahead of Vancouver Whitecaps on 46.

NASHVILLE AT THE START OF SEPTEMBER

• The pile: 53 points from 24 games, 16 wins, five draws, three losses, 48 goals scored, 19 conceded.
• The home mark: 11-1-0 at Geodis Park, the base that let them survive a night at BMO Field.
• The gap: nine points on Miami, 13 on New England, 14 on Chicago, with 10 games left.
• The Shield math: seven points on Vancouver, the West leaders, for the regular-season trophy.

They did not buy a World Cup name in July because they did not need one. Cristian Espinoza arrived in the offseason. Mukhtar is still the club’s best player. B.J. Callaghan’s problem remains health around Sam Surridge and Patrick Yazbek, not a hole in the XI. Miami’s six-game win streak from May 9 to July 25, the longest of the East race, still left them looking up. A 4-1 loss at Geodis Park on August 16, Mukhtar scoring twice after the break, is the result that still explains the nine-point hole better than any Soldier Field draw.

Who Holds the Last Playoff Tickets?

The top five are pulling away from the cut line. Nashville, Miami, New England, Chicago and Charlotte sit on 53, 44, 40, 39 and 39. Orlando and Cincinnati are on 31. Then it bunches: Philadelphia 30, NYCFC 29, Toronto 29, D.C. United 28, Red Bull New York 27. Four points separate sixth from 12th if you count Cincinnati’s game in hand.

Carles Gil has created 67 chances for New England, the most in the league, and the Revolution’s jump from 25 points at the break to 40 is the cleanest “no superstar required” climb besides Philadelphia’s. Evander still creates at Cincinnati (10 assists, 65 chances), but a 5-0 home beating and a minus-7 goal difference show why 31 points feels fragile. NYCFC have Nicolás Fernández Mercau and a new forward in Bénie Traoré, yet eight draws in 24 games have them on the wild-card side of the line.

D.C. United, with Baribo’s goals, are 11th on 28 from 23 games and cannot stumble much more. Toronto’s seven-game unbeaten run and the Nashville scalp give them a live path if Sargent and Sallói stay healthy. Montréal, Columbus and Atlanta are running out of games. Ten matches is enough to move four points. It is a short runway to move 10.

Miami Still Has to Catch Nashville

The East’s next statement night is already on the calendar. Nashville and Inter Miami meet on September 12, a first versus second with the Shield and the conference still on the same table. Miami have Messi on 18 goals and 13 assists, Casemiro arriving late in boxes, and 59 goals scored, the most in the East. They also have 44 conceded and a nine-point deficit that a 1-1 in Chicago did not touch.

Wednesday’s marquee sold 63,094 tickets and gave the league the picture it wanted, two former Barcelona strikers sharing a handshake and a goal each. It did not move the standings that matter. Nashville lost in Toronto and stayed first. Philadelphia scored five and stayed in the wild-card mix. Red Bull New York lost on the West Coast and stayed 12th. The pause had winners and losers. The remaining 10 games will decide whether that split holds through Decision Day.
