Barcelona Skipped Rashford, and United Have Him Back
Barcelona let a €30m Rashford option lapse after signing Gordon. He is back at Manchester United, creating chances without a goal, on £350,000 a week.
Barcelona let a €30 million option on Marcus Rashford expire on 15 June, and he is back in a Manchester United shirt. The left-sided forward who scored the free kick that helped seal La Liga is creating chances again under Michael Carrick, still without a goal.
United froze him out under Ruben Amorim, loaned him to Aston Villa, then sent him to Catalonia. Hansi Flick got a title-winning year out of him and still walked away. The cheap clause was the one Barcelona would not pay.
The €30m Door Closed on June 15
FC Barcelona announced a loan until 30 June 2026 on 23 July 2025, with an option to buy. Joan Laporta sat in the room when Rashford signed. The Englishman took the No. 14 shirt and called the move the thing he had dreamt of.
Coming to Barça is all that I dreamt
Marcus Rashford, on signing, FC Barcelona
The buyout was €30 million, about £26 million, structured so the Catalan club could spread the hit. They still needed to tell United by 15 June if they wanted him. They did not.
Fabrizio Romano wrote on 10 June that Barcelona would not pay the €30m option, with five days left on the clause. He added that the door to another loan was still ajar if United opened it. United did not. Rashford came off the books in Spain on 30 June and went back on them in Manchester.
THE OPTION CALENDAR
- 23 July 2025: Barcelona confirm the loan and the buy option, with Rashford signing in front of Laporta.
- 10 May 2026: He scores from a free kick in a 2-0 Clásico as Barcelona close on a 29th league title.
- 10 June 2026: Romano reports the option will not be paid.
- 15 June 2026: The clause expires. No new loan is agreed.
- 30 June 2026: The loan ends and he returns to United.
He stripped Barcelona out of his social biography as soon as the club told him the purchase was dead. The season in Spain was over in the paperwork before England had even kicked a World Cup ball in Dallas.
Flick Chose the Press Over the Finish
Anthony Gordon had already arrived from Newcastle United for £69.3 million. He plays the same left-sided role, and Raphinha had first claim on that wing anyway. Spanish reporting on 10 June called it a clear overbooking and said Flick preferred Gordon’s work without the ball, the press from the front that the coach treats as non-negotiable.
Age sat in the same file. Rashford turns 29 on 31 October. Gordon is three and a half years younger. The sporting case for keeping both, once Gordon was in, was thin.
The money case was thinner than it looked. Rashford had already cut his pay to join on loan and was ready to do so again on a three-year deal. The option itself was only €30 million. Gordon’s fee was more than double that, yet it could be written down across a five-year contract. Spanish figures put Rashford’s yearly slice of the fee at €10 million and Gordon’s at €14 million. Add wages, and the annual bill came out almost the same.
WHAT THE TWO DEALS COST ON PAPER
| Item | Rashford option | Gordon signing |
|---|---|---|
| Headline fee | €30 million | £69.3 million |
| Yearly slice of the fee | €10 million | €14 million |
| Contract shape | Three-year terms discussed | Five-year deal |
| Role under Flick | Left / wide forward | Left / wide forward |
| Flick’s lean | Finish, less press | Press from the front |
La Liga’s cap, the same constraint now visible in Barcelona’s salary-limit squeeze, treats wages and that yearly slice as one bill. A cheap-looking option still had to fit. Flick’s word closed it. The left wing is Gordon’s, and the club will live with Anthony Gordon’s World Cup run as the early public exam of the player they bought instead.
Barcelona later pushed the first chunk of the Gordon fee, about €22 million that had been due in 2026, back to July 2027. They walked away from €30 million on a teammate they already knew, then asked Newcastle for time on the one they chose.
Fourteen Goals Did Not Buy a Permanent Shirt
Transfermarkt logs 14 goals and 15 assists in 49 appearances across the loan. Wikipedia’s split is 8 league goals in 32 games, 5 in 11 Champions League matches, 1 in 4 Copa del Rey ties, and a blank in 2 Super Cup games. He was a starter and a bench option in the same season, which is how Flick’s front line actually worked.
The European nights came early. Two at Newcastle on 18 September. Two more at Olympiacos on 21 October, plus a penalty won when Barcelona still trailed. Club media had him down as the squad’s most productive attacker through that first burst. League minutes were more mixed, with a three-month dip that the sporting office never quite forgot.
He still left with his first league title. Barcelona said as much on 11 May, grouping him with Joan Garcia, João Cancelo and Roony Bardghji as first-time champions after the Clásico. For a United academy forward who had FA Cups and League Cups at home, a league medal was new.
None of that moved the option. The same office that brought him in on 23 July had, by June, decided Gordon plus Raphinha plus a hunt for a No. 9 was enough. Rashford had done the part of the bargain that shows up in the scoresheet. The part that shows up in Flick’s press and in the wage tab did not pass.
England Finished Third and the Bids Stayed Soft
He flew to Miami before the rest of Thomas Tuchel’s squad, trained at Inter Miami’s facilities, and posted “PREPARED!” while United and Barcelona were still circling the same clause. England opened against Croatia in Dallas on 17 June. Rashford came off the bench and scored the fourth in a 4-2 win, cutting inside from a Bukayo Saka pass.
Tuchel had started Anthony Gordon on that left side. After the Croatia goal he talked about Rashford pushing, in training and in meetings, and about a respectful fight with Gordon for the same ground. The rest of the tournament was a split shift.
RASHFORD AT THE 2026 WORLD CUP
- 17 June, Croatia: 18 minutes, one goal, 4-2 win in Dallas.
- 23 June, Ghana: 7 minutes, 0-0.
- 27 June, Panama: full 90, no goal, 2-0, England top Group L.
- 1 July, DR Congo: 61 minutes, 2-1 in the round of 32.
- 15 July, Argentina: 1 minute in a 1-2 semi-final defeat.
- 18 July, France: 45 minutes as England win the third-place match 6-4.
Six games, three starts, 222 minutes, one goal. He did not play against Mexico or Norway. The tournament raised his price in conversation and did not produce a buyer. Bayern Munich had made calls weeks earlier, then looked at cheaper profiles. United would not take another loan. Rashford’s own preference, once the Barcelona door shut, was to see out the United years rather than join another Premier League club.
Why Carrick Put Him Straight Back In
Michael Carrick played in the side on the night Rashford debuted in 2016. He had him back in the building in August after an extended break, with Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martínez among the other absentees folding into the same camp. Other clubs had sounded United out. Carrick stayed in touch through the summer, and the club landed on the plain outcome: reintegrate him.
There had been 20 months between his 426th United appearance and his 427th. The loans lasted 18 months. He is listed as No. 9 and has not asked for the old No. 10. Carrick’s public line after the Everton draw on 6 September was short and unsentimental.
Yeah, he’s done very well. As I said during the week, he’s done ever so well since he came back. I thought he looked really sharp again today and dangerous.
Michael Carrick, Manchester United head coach, after Everton
He took Rashford off in the 70th minute of that 2-2, saying the forward was “feeling a bit of something.” United had led twice. The left side went quieter after the change. That is the live argument around him now, not whether Barcelona might call again.
Six Completed Dribbles and Still No Goal
Three Premier League games, 194 minutes, no goal, no assist. The sample is small and the underlying numbers are not empty. Opta has him on six completed dribbles from 11 attempts after those three matches, a 54.55 percent clip, with only five players in the division ahead of him. He created 8 chances, level with Bruno Fernandes, who has played more football.
UNITED MINUTES, AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER
- 22 August, Hull: 45 minutes off the bench, 2-0 defeat.
- 30 August, Ipswich: 80 minutes in a 5-2 win, nutmegs and shots, still no finish.
- 6 September, Everton: 70 minutes in a 2-2 draw, then the early substitution.
The Everton tape is the one that made people sit up. A first touch on the left from Bryan Mbeumo, a glide past Merlin Röhl, a cutback that Matheus Cunha put over. Later a backheel into the six-yard box that James Tarkowski snuffed out. None of it hit the net. All of it looked like the forward who scored 30 in 2022-23, the version that had gone missing before Amorim sent him away.
THE EARLY RETURNS
- Dribbles: 6 completed from 11 attempts in three league games.
- Chances: 8 created, none yet turned into a goal or an assist.
- Shaw channel: 57 passes with Luke Shaw, 5 progressive each way, a pair that had already played 213 United games together.
Shaw’s fitness has always tracked Rashford’s output. The left-back played 47 games in the 30-goal season and only 15 the year Rashford dropped to 9. That link is back. So is the selection problem. Cunha can play on the same wing. Benjamin Šeško needs service through the middle. Carrick has to pick who occupies the space Rashford wants, and the Everton change, a forward for a full-back, is the choice supporters are already arguing about.
Liverpool and City Cannot Trigger the £40m Clause
He still has two years left on a £350,000-a-week United contract. That is £18.2 million a year before extras, the number that made Barcelona flinch even after a pay cut. United’s position once the option died was a £40 million valuation, with a clause other clubs can use. Liverpool and Manchester City are carved out of it. Direct traffic between those shirts has been rare for a reason, and the clause writes that reason down.
He is 13 Premier League goals short of 100, on 87. Twelve more for United in all competitions would take him to 150, level with Ruud van Nistelrooy in 10th on the club list, on 138 as of 6 September. Those are the records people around him now mention as a reason to stay and work, not as a transfer brochure.
On 9 September, Romano posted that Rashford was in United’s Champions League squad for the first time in 1,036 days, last seen in that competition against Copenhagen in November 2023. That is the quiet end of the Barcelona story. The option is dead. The loan is over. The wages are still United’s. The football, for the moment, is too.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Much Was Barcelona’s Buy Option for Rashford?
The clause was €30 million in three instalments of €10 million through 2028, a structure meant to ease the hit on Barcelona’s accounts. United had to be notified by 15 June 2026. The instalment plan did not make the wage bill any smaller, which is why the option still failed.
When Did Rashford’s Barcelona Loan Run?
He joined on 23 July 2025 and the deal ran to 30 June 2026. He wore No. 14, a shirt last associated at the club with names such as Thierry Henry and Javier Mascherano, and he was the first Englishman to play for Barcelona’s first team in 40 years, since Gary Lineker.
What Did Rashford Do on Loan at Aston Villa First?
United sent him to Villa in February 2025 after Amorim had stopped picking him. Under Unai Emery he made 17 appearances, scored 4 goals and added 5 assists, then moved on to Barcelona that July rather than returning to first-team training at Carrington.
How Close Is Rashford to United’s Scoring Marks?
He has 87 Premier League goals, 13 short of 100, and 138 United goals in all competitions as of 6 September, 12 short of 150. He is 28, listed as No. 9, and those two round numbers are now the internal case for giving the return more than a few weeks.
Can Rashford Still Leave United This Season?
The summer window is shut, so any exit before 2027 would need a special mechanism or a wait until January. The £40 million clause excludes Liverpool and Manchester City. His stated preference in June was to see out the two years rather than join another English club.
United named him in a Champions League squad on 9 September for the first time in 1,036 days. Barcelona still owe Newcastle on Gordon. Rashford still owes United a goal.
