James Milner retired on 1 June 2026 with a Premier League record of 658 appearances, ending 24 seasons at the top. He was 40, out of contract at Brighton, and he chose the stop himself.

The number is the receipt. He spent a career taking the job in front of him, and he walked away once Gareth Barry’s mark was his.

He Could Not Lift His Foot

The closest he came to a forced ending was 2024-25, not age. A contact knock on his knee in training before Brighton’s 1-1 draw at Arsenal on 31 August left the joint stable enough to try, and his hamstring then went. The reconstruction should have had him back in early December.

A nerve was damaged under the knife. He came out of the operation unable to lift his foot or his toes, spent four to five months in a brace, and saw the first flicker of movement on 31 December. Brighton physio Sean Duggan stayed with the rehab when the obvious reading was that the career was over.

There was a chance I might not have come back at all. I didn’t know if I could walk normally again, never mind play football.

He made four Premier League appearances that season and came back on the final day in a 4-1 win at Tottenham. He later said the six months without a working foot were what drove the last lap, the same “I’ll show you” streak he had carried since Leeds.

In 2025-26 he played 20 league games and scored once. On 31 August 2025, at 39 years and 239 days, he converted a penalty against Manchester City and became the competition’s second-oldest scorer behind Teddy Sheringham.

Five Games Clear of Gareth Barry

He equalled Barry at 653 against Aston Villa, then went alone in Brighton’s 2-0 win at Brentford on 21 February 2026, his 654th Premier League outing and 8,504 days after his debut. He played four more times and closed the account on 658, five clear of a record that had stood since 2018.

Only four men have reached 600 Premier League appearances. Ryan Giggs did it at one club. Frank Lampard did it at three. Barry and Milner did it by moving, staying fit, and remaining selectable when the shirt in front of them changed.

Leeds Sent Him On at 16

James Philip Milner was born in Leeds on 4 January 1986 and came through the United academy on a £70-a-week YTS. On 10 November 2002, at 16 years and 309 days, he came off the bench in the 84th minute of a 4-3 win at West Ham, with all seven goals already in. He was, at that point, the second-youngest player the Premier League had seen.

Paul Robinson, the last starter from Milner’s debut XI still going, retired in 2017. Newcastle paid for the raw wide player and used him as a utility man. Aston Villa, first on loan and then for £12 million in 2008, turned him into an England regular. Liverpool made him vice-captain under Brendan Rodgers and then Jürgen Klopp. He played 332 matches in all competitions, with 26 goals and 45 assists, including a long stretch at left-back in 2016-17 when the club needed a senior head in a patched defence. The 2018 Champions League final in Kyiv went against them. Madrid a year later did not.

Brighton Kept Him Until 40

The free move to the Amex in summer 2023 was the last roll. He played in the club’s first European campaign, missed almost a full season, then returned in time for another continental place.
