PSV Bets the Armband and Mauro Junior Reaches Brazil

PSV named Mauro Junior full-time captain on July 23, 2026, while Jerdy Schouten recovers from a torn ACL. On September 9, Carlo Ancelotti called the 27-year-old into Brazil’s first squad after the World Cup, the shirt he had been told required a transfer.

A Brazilian With a Red-and-White Heart

The club put it in those words when it handed him the armband. Schouten remains the appointed skipper, but the midfielder is not due back in 2026, so the vice-captain became the man who would wear it for as long as that absence lasts. His first game with the band was the Johan Cruyff Shield against AZ.

Mauro Jaqueson Junior Ferreira dos Santos is 1.71 m, left-footed, and listed as a defender who can also play in midfield. Peter Bosz’s squad still files him as shirt 17, born in Palmital, São Paulo, on May 6, 1999. He is one of the longest-serving players in the group, and on the club site Bosz calls him a soldier because he does what is asked of him.

The summer around that announcement was not quiet. Leeds United, Fenerbahce and FC Porto had all been in the conversation, along with clubs in South America, and Porto were described as close to a deal in June. The public honour landed on a player whose next club was still being priced.

That line was already on the record before the armband. The bet the club made in July was that status, and the years behind it, would hold against a move sold as the path to the Selecao.

The €12 Million Exit Door PSV Wants Shut

He extended his contract through 2029 on April 22, 2025, after first signing as an 18-year-old in 2017. Director of football Earnest Stewart said then that PSV was proud he had chosen the club over foreign options, and that there was still stretch in him. Mauro said he was far from finished and called himself Eindhovenian at heart.

The deal still carries a reported 12 million euro release clause, and in July the club was trying to take that figure out. His representatives were open to it if the compensation was right. PSV-watcher Rik Elfrink called the sum they wanted a hefty amount, and said the club would go along only so far.

CLUBS IN THE 2026 CHASE

• FC Porto: Contacted the player and, in June, came close to an agreement before the captaincy call.
• Fenerbahce: Pushed for a fast deal and were described as near personal terms, with the clause as the route in.
• Leeds United: Tracked him as left-back cover, with other Premier League interest in the same file.
• Como and Real Betis: Named among the sides watching a full-back who can also play in midfield.

A clause that cheap, on a captain with a Brazil call-up, is the part of the wager that has not closed. The armband raised his profile. It did not, on the public record, erase the exit number.

Schouten’s Knee Took the Armband in April

The vacancy was not a planning choice. Schouten, born January 12, 1997, tore a cruciate ligament in a 4-3 win over FC Utrecht and needed surgery. PSV said a typical recovery for that injury runs six to nine months, which is why the club does not expect him back in this calendar year.

Schouten, in the club’s medical note, said he felt right away that it was wrong, kept a glimmer of hope, then lost it. He also said great things were still coming for PSV and that he would do everything to be part of them. The leadership job for this season moved, in the meantime, to the Brazilian who had spent nine years waiting for a senior cap.

He Has 206 Games and Four Dutch Titles

PSV signed him from Desportivo Brasil in 2017 after training camps that began in 2013. He debuted the same year and won the Eredivisie as a teenager, then spent 2019/20 on loan at Heracles Almelo before becoming a regular. In recent seasons he has played mostly as a left-back or right-back after earlier years in midfield and on the wing.

Club notes from the Ajax match in early May recorded his 200th PSV appearance. By September 9 the first-team tally stood at 206 matches and 10 goals, the extra goal coming in this season’s opening stretch. Transfermarkt’s club split also logs the appearances for PSV and Heracles behind that Eindhoven total.

MAURO JUNIOR, LAST THREE SEASONS

Those 11 assists last season are the number that followed him onto Ancelotti’s list. This season’s six matches, 481 minutes, one goal and one assist come from PSV’s own player file. With the club he has four Eredivisie titles (2017/18, 2023/24, 2024/25, 2025/26) and two KNVB Cups (2021/22, 2022/23).

He also had a knee operation in March 2023 and missed the end of last spring with a separate problem Bosz confirmed in May, so the current run is not a straight, unbroken climb. It is a long stay that kept producing the same question: would a bigger league finally make Brazil call?

Why Ancelotti Called a Full-Back Brazil Barely Knows

The answer, from the coach, was the way he plays. Ancelotti said Mauro is a left-back with traits unlike the others, that he likes to come inside, attacking, with quality. He also said he does not know the player well, that Brazil is looking at left-backs across Europe, and that he wanted to see Mauro up close. Kaiki Bruno, now at Como, was discussed and left out.

That is a test, not a coronation. Large parts of the Brazilian audience had not watched him in the Eredivisie, and the first reading of the list treated several new names as looks rather than settled picks. He had already played for Brazil’s under-15, under-17, under-20 and under-23 sides. The senior shirt never arrived under earlier coaches, including during talk years ago that he might even qualify for the Netherlands.

Ancelotti is building a new cycle toward the 2030 World Cup after the 2026 tournament, with three friendlies in this window and another FIFA date in November. The CBF posted the 26 names and the calendar on September 9.

Brazil play Australia on September 25 and 29, then India on October 3, the first meeting between the sides. If the July theory was that he had to leave Eindhoven to get in the picture, the September list cut against it. He stayed, took the armband, and Ancelotti picked the PSV captain anyway.

Thursday Night Against Shakhtar Goes On Without Him

The new captain will not lead PSV into the Champions League. Last season, in a 1-2 home defeat by Bayern Munich that ended their league-phase hopes, he received a second yellow for clipping Michael Olise in added time. The ban moved with him into this campaign, so he sits out Shakhtar Donetsk on September 10 at Philips Stadion.

Ivan Perisic is expected to wear the band that night. Filip Kostic is the likely stand-in at left-back, with Sergino Dest available on the other side and Kiliann Sildillia ruled out after surgery. Bosz is already short of full-backs for the first European night of the season, which is an awkward way to start a captain’s reign.

The wager is still live in both directions. He is in Eindhoven, under contract to 2029, with the armband and a first Brazil squad. The reported 12 million euro clause is still in the paperwork, and the first job of the new captain’s European season is to watch it from the stands.
