Patrick Berg Stays Put as Bolton Land Bair on Loan

Patrick Berg is still Bodø/Glimt’s captain after five English clubs weighed a move in July for the Norway midfielder. The 28-year-old played all six of Norway’s World Cup games, then went back to the Arctic club that already holds him until 2028.

Theo Bair, who never made Canada’s tournament squad, joined Bolton Wanderers on September 1 from Auxerre on a season-long loan, with an option to buy.

Patrick Berg Is Still Wearing Yellow

Berg started four of those six World Cup matches and finished the other two from the bench. Opta logged 443 minutes, no goals and two assists. He wore the armband in the group game against France and played the full 120 minutes of the 2-1 extra-time loss to England on July 11.

Store norske leksikon lists him as one of Norway’s best players in the tournament after he became a starter. Norway reached the quarter-finals. That run, plus a Champions League last-16 with Glimt, is what put English scouts on him in the first place.

He has not changed clubs. Glimt’s own numbers for 2026 show 17 Eliteserien games, 1,438 minutes, 2 goals and 1 assist. In last season’s Champions League he started all 12 of his appearances and added 1 assist. This summer’s qualifying round brought 4 more nights, 1 goal and 2 assists. The midfielder English football wanted in July is still the man taking Glimt into Europe.

Fifty-One Days, Then a Loan Deal

Bolton’s chase of Bair ran from July 12 to September 1, 51 days, and it never became the permanent transfer the early briefings had him close to. Wanderers announced a season-long loan with an option to buy on deadline day, and Auxerre confirmed the loan on its own site.

Bair is 27, 1.91 m, and wears 9. He scored 15 goals in his one season at Motherwell, then joined Auxerre on July 16, 2024 for €1.9 million on a four-year deal. France did not take. He managed 2 goals in 29 Ligue 1 games, went to Lausanne-Sport on loan, and scored 10 in 31 appearances there. Lausanne declined to buy him. Canada handed him 7 caps and left him out of the World Cup squad.

FROM JULY RUMOUR TO SEPTEMBER REALITY

1. July 12, 2026: Bolton open talks with Auxerre for Bair as a top target.
2. September 1, 2026: Wanderers announce the season-long loan with an option, and Auxerre signs it off.
3. September 8, 2026: Bair is named among the substitutes for Bolton against West Ham United.

The first public reaction around the announcement treated the deal as a cheap stand-in rather than a statement No. 9, and the terms explain why. Bolton got a year and a maybe, not a bought centre-forward. Bair, for his part, sounded as if the wait had been the hard part.

Which Clubs Circled Him After Norway’s Run?

July briefings put five English clubs on Berg. Burnley and West Ham, both freshly relegated, were described as assessing whether to go formal. Coventry City, Hull City and Ipswich Town, the three sides that had just gone up, were said to be monitoring him. None of the five signed him.

THE FIVE CLUBS THAT LOOKED AT BERG

The three clubs that reached the Premier League did their shopping as top-flight sides. The two that dropped into the Championship spent the window rebuilding without the Norway captain. Spanish interest in Berg surfaced in August without a formal bid. The summer closed with the same name on the Glimt teamsheet.

A Short Spell at Lens Already Answered This

English clubs were not the first to test whether Berg wanted out. Glimt sold him to Lens in December 2021. He lasted eight months in Ligue 1, 17 league games, no goals, and came home in the summer of 2022. The club bought him back and handed him a long deal. Before the 2024 Eliteserien opener against Fredrikstad he signed a contract that runs to summer 2028.

On the club site he called Glimt the best place to be, said he was in a good spot personally and in his career, and put his focus on Bodø even while leaving the door ajar for football’s usual twists. Sporting chief Håvard Sakariassen said the longer deal showed Glimt was an attractive club to play for. That was two years before the World Cup shop window. The paperwork English recruiters would have had to break was already sitting in a drawer in Bodø.

Former Glimt goalkeeper Ricardo Friedrich, now at Malmö, watched the World Cup from a distance and told FIFA that Berg’s first games off the bench made the next decision obvious.

Ståle Solbakken did promote him. Clubs in England then asked the next question, whether he would leave Glimt for a second time, and the answer was the same one Lens already heard.

Coventry Spent £6m on a Blade Instead

Coventry, Hull and Ipswich did not need a Championship midfielder once they had gone up. Coventry still bought a midfielder from this division, paying Sheffield United £6 million for Gustavo Hamer. That was the actual English move involving a Blade in the same window Berg was supposed to fill.

West Ham have scored 14 goals in 6 Championship games and sit on 11 points without adding the Norway captain. Burnley have 3 points from 6, no wins, 7 scored and 13 conceded, and also did not sign him. One relegated club has started like a promotion side. The other has started like a club still looking for a midfield. Berg is in neither dressing room.

Bolton, the one English club that finished a deal from that July pile of rumours, have 4 points from 6 games, 6 scored and 12 conceded, and sit 21st after six Championship matches. The loan arrived after the season had already begun. Bair’s first listed involvement was a place on the bench against West Ham on September 8, a 2-3 home defeat.

How Sheffield United Played the Same Window

Chris Wilder’s side never joined the Berg queue. United used the weeks around those rumours to bed in Romelle Donovan, a season-long loan from Brentford, who debuted in a 0-0 pre-season draw with Chesterfield. They sold Hamer to the newly promoted club that had been linked with Berg, and they took points off the club that signed Bair.

On September 1, the afternoon Bolton announced the Canadian, Sheffield United beat Wanderers 3-2. United then sat 10th after 6 games, with 2 wins, 3 draws, 1 defeat and 9 points, 8 scored and 8 conceded. The Blades needed bodies before August 14, as every Championship side did. They did not spend the window chasing a 28-year-old who had already decided Bodø was home.

Bolton were back in this division for the first time since 2018/19 after winning the League One play-offs in May. Steven Schumacher’s recruitment ran late in the positions that hurt promoted sides first, centre-forward among them. Millwall then beat Wanderers 4-0 on September 5. Cardiff City visit on September 12.

Coffee in Hand Before Bayern Munich

A clip posted on September 9 shows Berg leaving a session barefoot, coffee in his hand, the day before Glimt meet Bayern Munich in the Champions League. He is still the captain. Last season he was voted Eliteserien player of the year after 5 goals and 12 assists in 28 league games. The club has four league titles in 2020, 2021, 2023 and 2024 and a cup in 2025/26, and he has been in the middle of that run since his debut as a teenager in a 0-3 loss to Odd in 2014.

Bair is the rumour that actually moved, and he moved as a loan with a buy option, onto the bench of a side sitting 21st. Berg is the rumour that never did, and he walks into the Allianz Arena in the same yellow shirt English clubs were measuring in July.
