Carlos Coronel Stays at São Paulo After Galaxy’s Free Ask

Carlos Coronel rejected a no-fee LA Galaxy approach in July and stayed at São Paulo as Rafael’s backup. The 29-year-old Paraguay keeper still has zero Série A games. Dorival Júnior will not sell him with a Sudamericana return against Boca Juniors on September 15.

Galaxy Wanted a Keeper and Offered No Fee

Valentin Furlan said on July 11 that Coronel’s staff cut off an LA Galaxy approach and that the keeper wanted minutes in the second half of the year. São Paulo, Furlan added, did not want to sell him either.

Alexsander Vieira, who covers the club, filled in the terms three days later. Galaxy asked São Paulo to let Coronel go at no fee, either on loan or by ending the deal by mutual consent. The board refused and counted on him for the rest of the season, even though his staff still believed he could push Rafael.

WHAT GALAXY ACTUALLY ASKED FOR

• The fee: None. The club wanted a loan or a mutual end to the deal, not a transfer payment.
• The timing: The ask landed on July 11, two days before MLS opened its summer window.
• Who stopped it: Coronel’s representatives ended the talks, and São Paulo’s board backed that stance.
• The job in Los Angeles: Depth behind a keeper already in possession of the shirt, not a guaranteed start.

That last point is why the bid never grew teeth. On September 9, JT Marcinkowski started in Vancouver, with Novak Mićović, 24, among the substitutes. Marcinkowski, 29, is the same age as Coronel. Mićović made 27 starts in all competitions in 2025. Galaxy had already traded John McCarthy to New York Red Bulls on August 22, 2025, for up to $150,000 in general allocation money and a 2026 third-round SuperDraft pick. A veteran who knows MLS would have been cheap cover, which is another way of saying he was not worth a cheque.

A no-fee request for a keeper under contract through 2028 only works if the selling club is desperate. São Paulo, short after freezing Young, was the opposite. When Coronel rejected a no-fee Galaxy approach, he was not walking away from a starting job that had been put on the table.

No Spare Goalkeeper After Young Was Frozen Out

Dorival’s staff has two experienced options and then the academy. Rafael, 37, wears the captain’s armband and the No. 23 shirt. Coronel is No. 31. After that, the list is João Pedro, 20, permanently promoted after last year’s Copinha, and Felipe Preis, 20. Young, 24, is still on the books through December 2026 and is not in the group.

SAO PAULO’S KEEPER LIST

Young had a deal to leave for Portimonense, trained for a week in Portugal, then came back after the club was hit with a transfer ban. As of September 4 he was still training apart from the first team, grouped with other players São Paulo wanted off the wage bill before Brazil’s window shut on September 11. João Pedro and Preis can sit on a bench. They cannot be the plan if Rafael goes down in a quarterfinal.

That is the constraint under the July decision. São Paulo did not keep Coronel as a favour. The squad cannot face the rest of the year with one senior keeper and two teenagers.

He Already Walked Away From MLS Once

New York Red Bulls confirmed on November 26, 2025, that Coronel was out of contract and would not return. He had been first choice from 2021 through 2025 and played 180 games across all competitions, including the run to MLS Cup 2024, which New York lost to Galaxy. He has 9 caps for Paraguay.

In late December he agreed terms with Orlando City and completed a medical, then went silent and took São Paulo instead. MLS clubs and Saudi sides had been in the mix. São Paulo paid no transfer fee, took 100% of his economic rights, and announced him on January 3. President Julio Casares said the club wanted a keeper still young for the position, with the know-how to play whenever he was called, and that Coronel fit.

The deal is a contract through 31 December 2028, with a one-year extension if he hits targets. He had already spent a month at Cotia as a 15-year-old, been approved, then released. Coming back as Rafael’s deputy was the first time he had joined a Brazilian giant as a professional.

HOW THE WAGER WAS PLACED

1. November 26, 2025: New York confirms Coronel is out of contract and will not return.
2. December 24, 2025: He has agreed terms and completed a medical with Orlando City, then pivots to São Paulo.
3. January 3, 2026: São Paulo announces the free signing through 31 December 2028.
4. April 28, 2026: He debuts in the Sudamericana, a 0-0 at Millonarios.
5. July 11, 2026: Galaxy’s no-fee ask dies. He stays to chase minutes in the second half.
6. September 2, 2026: The MLS secondary window shuts. He can no longer be registered there this season.
7. September 8, 2026: Rafael starts the Sudamericana quarterfinal first leg at Boca. São Paulo lose 1-0.

He left a league where he started for five years, turned down a club that had already done the medical, and then turned down the club that had beaten him in an MLS Cup final when it came back with nothing in its hand.

Two Shutouts, Zero League Minutes

The second-half minutes he wanted have not arrived in the league. Rafael has 25 Série A appearances, 62 saves and 28 goals conceded. Coronel’s 2026 log is two Sudamericana starts, 180 minutes, two clean sheets and one yellow card. One of those nights was the 0-0 at Millonarios on April 28. The other was the 0-0 at O’Higgins. In the home 2-0 against O’Higgins, Rafael played and Coronel sat.

• Group C: São Paulo took 12 points, 3 wins and 3 draws, and conceded 1 goal in 6 matches before beating Bolívar 4-2 on aggregate.
• Next league date: Palmeiras on September 12, then the Boca return three days later.

Dorival took over on May 15 for a third spell, on a deal through the end of 2026, after Roger Machado was sacked. The continental group was already unbeaten. Coronel’s path to the team has been cup rotation, not a challenge to the captain in the league, and even that path has been thin.

Why Stay Behind a 37-Year-Old Captain?

The bet only works if Dorival actually splits the load. Brasileirão dates are spread out and the Sudamericana knockout rounds pile up, so a staff that wants to protect Rafael has a reason to use the deputy. An injury would force the issue overnight. That has not happened in the league, where Rafael has held the shirt.

Coronel’s camp still talks as if the No. 1 job is in play. Vieira reported that view in July, when the keeper had already gone months as a backup. The football does not back it yet. A 37-year-old who plays every league game is not a placeholder. He is the plan.

Staying also keeps him in South American knockout football and at a club whose name travels in Paraguay. Sitting in MLS as Marcinkowski’s backup would have paid in games he already knows how to play. It would not have paid in the nights he came home to find.

A One-Goal Hole and a Tuesday Return

Boca Juniors beat São Paulo 1-0 at La Bombonera on September 8. Miguel Merentiel scored in the 52nd minute. Rafael saved the first shot and the rebound went in. Jonathan Calleri picked up a yellow card and is suspended for the second leg. The return is Tuesday, September 15, at Morumbí. São Paulo need to win the tie on home soil. The winner meets Independiente Santa Fe or Vasco da Gama in the semifinals.

São Paulo won this competition in 2012 and lost the 2022 final. They had been unbeaten in eight Sudamericana matches this year, through Group C and Bolívar, before Boca. Rafael will start that return unless something breaks in the 72 hours after Palmeiras. Coronel’s wager, the one he made when Galaxy offered him a free ride back to California, is still a seat on the bench for the biggest night of São Paulo’s year.

The Registration Window Closed on September 2

MLS set its 2026 secondary window to open July 13 and secondary window closed on September 2, the first time in two decades, Covid 2020 aside, that the summer market ran into September. The primary window ran January 26 to March 26. Roster freeze is October 9, which only helps clubs adding free agents. Coronel is under contract in Brazil, so he cannot move as a free agent.

Brazil’s window runs through September 11. Galaxy’s July enquiry came while both markets were about to be, or already were, open. That lane is gone. Any new MLS deal waits for 2027.

Sixty-one days after he said no, the cheap exit has vanished and the minutes have not arrived. Palmeiras on September 12, Boca on September 15, and a league campaign stuck in 10th are the games left to make the bet look right. Rafael is still in goal until one of those nights changes.
