Utah’s Fourth-Place Rise Survived Gotham’s 3-1 in Sandy

Gotham FC beat Utah Royals 3-1 on July 10 in Sandy, the first 2026 meeting and the club’s 100th regular-season win. The Bats did it without Sam Kerr, three days after New York named Etihad Park as the 2028 home.

Two months later Gotham leads the NWSL on 45 points. Utah is fourth on 39 with 40 goals, 13 more than Gotham, after a 12th-place finish in 2025.

The 100th Win Came in Sandy

The first 2026 meeting was never a quiet road date. Gotham arrived at America First Field on a Friday night, kicked off at 10 p.m. ET, and left with the 100th regular-season victory in club history, becoming the sixth NWSL club to reach that mark. North Carolina sat on 102 at the time, with Washington on 107, Chicago on 112, Seattle on 125 and Portland on 138.

Juan Carlos Amorós, the Gotham coach, called it a team win after nine or 10 days on the road. His side had just lost 2-0 at San Diego Wave on July 4, the first league game after the summer break, and needed a response in 94-degree heat. The 3-1 result moved Gotham to 7-3-3 and 24 points, into fourth place that night, and sent the club home for a Queens Classic at Citi Field five days later.

THE NIGHT IN SANDY

• The crowd: 10,014 at America First Field on a sunny 94-degree night.
• The xG: Gotham 2.35, Utah 2.00, with both teams taking 12 shots.
• The shots on goal: Utah 7, Gotham 5, with Ann-Katrin Berger making 6 saves to Mandy McGlynn’s 2.
• The table: Gotham 7-3-3 and 24 points after the win, then fourth in the league.

Stats Perform’s Opta feed later logged a Gotham goal against Utah as the first NWSL sequence of the season in which all 11 players touched the ball on the build-up. The Bats were already playing through the whole team, even with Kerr still waiting on the transfer window.

Utah Climbed From 12th Place to Fourth

The preview copy around that Friday treated Utah as a surprise. The numbers now make the surprise look structural. In 2025 the Royals finished 6-13-7 for 25 points, 12th in a 14-team table, with 28 goals scored and 42 conceded across 26 games under Jimmy Coenraets. In 2026, through 23 games, they are 12-3-8 for 39 points with 40 goals scored and 30 conceded.

That is second in the league in goals, behind only North Carolina’s 46. Gotham, first on points, has 27. The table leader is winning matches. The fourth-place side is scoring them.

NWSL TOP FIVE AFTER SEPT. 6

Three clubs are tied on 39 points. North Carolina holds third on a plus-13 goal difference, Utah is plus-10, and San Diego is plus-6. Washington is two points behind Gotham. Portland is on 38. The pack behind first place is tight enough that a Decision Day meeting in Harrison still has weight.

Utah’s rise has a face. Mina Tanaka, Narumi Miura and Cloé Lacasse started the July meeting, and the Royals later put five past Portland at home on Aug. 2. Boston Legacy then nicked a 2-1 result in Sandy on Sept. 4, so the climb has wobble in it. Fourth place with 40 goals is still a different club from the one that took 25 points a year ago.

How the First Meeting Unfolded

Gotham almost scored 17 seconds in, when Esther González caught McGlynn off her line and chipped over from 22 yards. Utah then wasted a gift of its own, Tanaka skying a shot with Berger stranded after a wayward pass. Cece Delzer made the next mistake count, finishing from Kiana Palacios in the 23rd minute for 1-0.

Jordynn Dudley, the Gotham rookie, won a penalty right after the restart. González smashed it in, her fourth successful regular-season penalty in four tries for the club, and the night flipped. Tierna Davidson, the captain, then one-timed Guro Reiten’s corner with her right foot in first-half stoppage. González added the third in the 70th minute from Sarah Schupansky’s curled pass, her eighth career brace and her third against Utah. She moved onto 28 regular-season goals for Gotham, level with Kerr, and to six league goals against the Royals, the most of any player.

Alexandra Billeter refereed. Utah collected four yellow cards, including one for the bench. Gotham’s expected-goals edge was thin, and Amorós admitted the hosts had big chances that came from Gotham mistakes.

We dominated. We had the best chances that came out of our own work. They also had big chances, but some of them came from mistakes from us. So, the resilience and the commitment from everyone, it was outstanding. We’ve been on the road now for nine or 10 days, and today was a team win. Being able to celebrate the hundredth victory for the club is really another landmark.

It was only the second time Gotham had won immediately after a league loss. Amorós’s team was 6-1-1 since an April 25 win over Bay FC. The first 2026 meeting with Utah became a landmark night and a repair job at the same time.

Sam Kerr Had to Sit That Night Out

Kerr had already signed. Gotham announced the Australian forward on June 29 as a free agent from Chelsea, on a contract through the 2030 season, and said she would join in July pending her international transfer certificate. The league window did not open until July 14. The Utah match sat four days on the wrong side of that date.

“I’m incredibly excited to return to Gotham FC and to this city,” Kerr said. “This club was an important part of my journey, and to come back at this moment, with everything Gotham has built, is really special.” Yael Averbuch West, Gotham’s president of soccer operations, called her a player who can decide matches in an instant. None of that helped on July 10.

She had played for the club from 2015 to 2017, when it was Sky Blue FC, and scored a then-league-record 17 goals in 2017 on the way to the Golden Boot and MVP. Chelsea then got 116 goals in 158 appearances, five Women’s Super League titles, three FA Cups and three League Cups. The Matildas captain carried 139 caps and 75 international goals into the return. She still had to watch the first Utah meeting from outside the squad.

Her second Gotham debut came on July 15 at Citi Field, a 1-0 win over Washington Spirit in front of 42,175, the second-largest crowd in NWSL history. She entered in the 64th minute. Rose Lavelle scored the goal. The Kerr signing was the noise around the Utah week. González and Davidson did the scoring without her.

Queens Got the Stadium News Three Days Earlier

On July 7, Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani stood with Gotham and New York City FC to say the two-time NWSL champions would make Etihad Park in Queens its permanent home beginning in 2028. It will be New York City’s first soccer-specific stadium. NYCFC is due to start there in July 2027 when MLS flips to a summer-to-spring calendar, with Gotham following a year later. The building is also slated for men’s and women’s Olympic soccer in 2028.

The state release said Etihad Park puts more than 3 million extra people within a 75-minute trip by bus, subway or Long Island Rail Road. It is all-electric, privately funded by City Football Group, and built with union labor, next to Citi Field in Willets Point. Carolyn Tisch Blodgett, Gotham’s governor, said the club’s ambition has been bigger than championships and that world-class athletes deserve world-class environments. Training stays in New Jersey, at a first dedicated site in Whippany on the former Red Bull campus, with a 2027 target.

Fans who wanted to cheer or boo that news in person had to wait. The next match was in suburban Salt Lake City, on Victory+, a free stream at the time. The identity week and the football week were not the same place. Gotham still had to win a road game in 94-degree weather before anyone could talk about Queens as a home.

Utah Still Has Not Beaten Gotham Since 2024

The Royals rejoined the NWSL in 2024 after years away. They have not beaten Gotham in five meetings since that return, a run of four wins and a draw for the Bats. The 0-0 at Red Bull Arena on Aug. 24, 2025, is the only result Utah has salvaged. Gotham has scored 11 and conceded 2 in those five games.

MEETINGS SINCE UTAH RETURNED

1. Sept. 22, 2024: Gotham 1-0 Utah at home.
2. Nov. 2, 2024: Gotham 4-1 at America First Field.
3. June 14, 2025: Gotham 3-0 at America First Field.
4. Aug. 24, 2025: Gotham 0-0 Utah at home.
5. July 10, 2026: Gotham 3-1 at America First Field.

González has done most of the damage. Six regular-season goals against Utah is a league high on that matchup, and the July brace was her third career two-goal night against the same opponent. Coenraets’s side can score on almost anyone in 2026 and still has not found a way through this particular opponent. That is the pattern the first 2026 meeting extended, rather than broke.

Older history is mixed. Utah beat Sky Blue in 2018 and 2019, including a 3-0 in Sandy. Those clubs are not these clubs. The current Royals attack, with Tanaka and Lacasse and a 5-1 against Portland already on the ledger, is the version Gotham will see again in November, not the 2025 side that finished 12th.

The Rematch Lands on Nov. 1 in Harrison

Gotham is playing a 30-match regular season, 15 home at Sports Illustrated Stadium and 15 away, and has seven games left after 23. Utah is on the same 23-game mark. The league sends eight clubs to the playoffs, with quarterfinals dated Nov. 6-8 and the championship on Nov. 21. Decision Day is Sunday, Nov. 1, when every team plays, and Gotham’s home finale is Utah at 5 p.m. ET.

Before that, the calendar splits. Gotham visits Racing Louisville on Friday, Sept. 11, at 6:30 p.m. ET. Utah visits Houston Dash on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 8:45 p.m. ET. Denver Summit already punched a 3-0 hole in Gotham on Sept. 6 at Centennial Stadium, so first place is not a cushion. The Bats still have the points lead and the H2H edge. They no longer have the aura of a side that does not concede in bunches.
