Mikey Moore Named the Premier League Then Joined Köln

Mikey Moore joined 1. FC Köln on loan on 31 August 2026, 40 days after telling Tottenham the Premier League was where he wanted to play. Rangers had spent the spring asking for him back, and Roberto De Zerbi still gave him a start before signing off the German move.

The Ibrox return died in the same window as the manager who had promised to chase it.

The League He Said He Wanted

Moore came off the bench at half-time in Tottenham’s 1-0 pre-season win over MK Dons on 22 July, still 18 and freshly back from a season in Glasgow, with a 35-man New Zealand and Australia tour next on the list. After the game he told the club he was buzzing to be in a Tottenham shirt again, and then he named the division he was chasing.

To compete in the Premier League, where I want to play football, you need to be physically right. You need to be as good as all the other boys in the league because it’s such a physically demanding league. It’s something I’ve had to work hard on over the summer but I’m feeling good in myself and need to show technically as well that I’m at a good level.

He called Rangers a huge club and said he had loved every second there, adding that he had come back a better player and a better person. That public choice of the Premier League was taken at Ibrox as a knock to a summer chase that had barely started, even as he kept saying the Scottish year had put him in better shape for whatever came next.

Throughout pre-season, he said, any minutes he got were there to show he had returned physically sharper. Tottenham had no European campaign to spread the load, so those minutes were always going to be scarce once De Zerbi finished rebuilding the attack.

Rohl Told Rangers to Try Everything

Danny Rohl had already put the club on the record. After Rangers beat Falkirk 5-2 on the final day of the Scottish season, he said they were clear on Moore, that three parties had to agree, and that he believed Rangers could take the winger further, including on a left side with Tuur Rommens. He wanted him in for pre-season. He also said they would wait if waiting made sense.

“We are clear, we will try everything,” Rohl said.

Moore had just been voted Men’s Young Player of the Year at the club’s own awards, after a loan that began on 1 August 2025. On 4 May Tottenham confirmed he had been crowned PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year, beating Falkirk’s Barney Stewart, Findlay Marshall of Arbroath and Dundee’s Luke Graham. Rangers lost 2-1 at league leaders Hearts the following afternoon, and Moore had already scored in a 3-1 league win over Celtic.

Rohl left for RB Salzburg on 17 June anyway, less than eight months after taking the Ibrox job in October. Derek McInnes came in from Hearts. The coach who wanted Moore in from day one of pre-season was no longer in the room to wait for Tottenham’s answer.

Three Tottenham Games Ended the Audition

De Zerbi had spent around £243m and was still trying to add wide players. After the Auckland friendly he said the club had to study the last part of the market, then speak with Moore, his agent and the club to find the best solution for everyone. He also said he would like to keep a young academy attacker who still needed games.

Moore started the 3-0 friendly win over Hoffenheim on 15 August and scored twice. He then started the Premier League opener at Brentford on 22 August, and Tottenham lost 3-0. De Zerbi said the timing of the press with Moore “in the left centre” was late too often, and James Maddison replaced him in the 68th minute.

Four days later he started the Carabao Cup tie against Charlton Athletic, played the whole match, scored with his left foot in the 41st minute and added an assist in a 5-1 win. Asked about him afterwards, De Zerbi said the night mattered for the player and for the club, because Moore is theirs and is good, but they could not make the wrong call when he still needed games in him. Johan Lange and Vinai would have to help find the answer.

He came off the bench in a 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle United on 29 August. The loan was confirmed two days later.

That is three competitive appearances in eight days, then a ticket to the Bundesliga. The Premier League look he had asked for lasted two league games and a cup night.

What the Köln Loan Contains

Tottenham announced on 31 August that Moore, by then 19, had joined Köln for the rest of the 2026/27 season. The club’s own note recorded the Rangers return as seven goals in 47 appearances plus the PFA Scotland award. He had been at Tottenham since he was seven, won an Under-17 and Under-18 Premier League Cup double in 2022/23, made his Premier League debut against Manchester City in May 2024, and scored his first senior goal against Elfsborg in January 2025 during the Europa League-winning run.

The deal is a season loan with no buy option. His Tottenham contract runs through 2030. He is due back in north London next summer. Köln had been on him since early August, while De Zerbi hesitated, and the new attacking options in London finally freed the teenager to leave. He arrived as Köln’s 12th summer signing, on a German deal running to the end of June 2027, with the club also seeing him as help after Jakub Kaminski left for Benfica.

THE KÖLN LOAN TERMS

• The window: Rest of the 2026/27 season, announced 31 August.
• The clause: No option to buy, with Moore still Tottenham’s player until 2030.
• The return: Back in north London next summer, after a Köln deal to the end of June 2027.
• The wait: Köln worked the move from early August while De Zerbi still wanted a look at him.

Moore then made the two quotes sit side by side. “The club showed great interest from the beginning,” he said. “The talks with those responsible were excellent. The prospect of playing Bundesliga football here and the way Cologne want to play made the decision easy for me.”

Sporting director Thomas Kessler said that even at his age Moore already showed real maturity, with high technical quality, courage in one-on-one situations, and the dynamism to keep creating danger. Kessler also said Köln had been in close contact with the player, his people and Tottenham, and had convinced him of the shared path.

Spurs supporters under that welcome treated it as a handover and asked Köln to look after him, with one calling the Bundesliga a cracking league for him to play in. The July line about England had been a request for minutes, not a promise to sit behind a rebuilt Tottenham attack.

Ibrox Hired McInnes and Moved On

Rangers listed Moore among the loans that expired in the summer. McInnes, in for Rohl, oversaw a 14-player senior intake, and the front line was restocked without the teenager who had been young player of the year in two rooms in Glasgow.

Rohl’s patience plan needed a coach who would still be waiting in late August. That coach took the Salzburg job in June. By the time Tottenham decided Moore needed games more than a seat in De Zerbi’s rotation, Ibrox had already built a different attack.

HOW THE IBROX CHASE CLOSED

1. 1 August 2025: Moore joins Rangers on a season loan from Tottenham.
2. 11 August 2025: He signs a new Tottenham deal, on his 18th birthday, running to 2030.
3. 4 May 2026: Tottenham confirm the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year award.
4. 16 May 2026: Rohl says Rangers will try everything to bring him back.
5. 17 June 2026: Rohl leaves for RB Salzburg, with McInnes lined up from Hearts.
6. 22 July 2026: Moore, after MK Dons, names the Premier League as the league he wants.
7. 31 August 2026: Tottenham send him to Köln, and Rangers log him as a loan that ended.

Rohl’s May push was on the record. By late August Rangers had a new manager and a new intake, and Moore was already in Germany.

Wagner Liked What He Saw in 45 Minutes

Köln listed him as available for the Stuttgart trip on 4 September, four days after the deal, with Said El Mala out sick. Moore came on at half-time in a 4-1 defeat, the side already a goal down, and put two shots on target in those 45 minutes. Köln’s English account later congratulated him on a first assist.

Head coach René Wagner did not hide the glow, even in a beating.

He had asked Tottenham for Premier League football and got a start, a public critique, a cup goal and a deadline flight. Rangers, who had done the developing, hired a new manager and signed 14 players. Köln, who had waited through August, put him on at half-time in the Bundesliga and asked for more.

Moore is due back at Tottenham in the summer of 2027, with that 2030 contract still in front of him.
