Kevin Mier Stayed at Cruz Azul After River Blinked

Kevin Mier is still Cruz Azul’s starting goalkeeper, two months after River Plate was said to have $7 million ready for him. He started again on September 6 against Santos Laguna. In Buenos Aires the job he was meant to inherit already belongs to someone else.

Santiago Beltrán, 21, has been River’s first-choice keeper since January, and Franco Armani left for Atlético Nacional as a free agent in July. Cruz Azul, holding a contract through June 30, 2029, never had to sell.

Santiago Beltrán Already Had the Shirt

The July chatter treated Armani’s exit as an empty net. It was not. Beltrán, born in Buenos Aires on October 4, 2004 and listed at 1.92 m, made his official debut on January 24 against Barracas Central after injuries to Armani and Ezequiel Centurión, and he kept the gloves.

Through August 30 he had 28 league matches, 24 goals conceded and 11 clean sheets, plus two domestic-cup games and seven in continental play, for 37 appearances, 30 goals against and 16 shutouts. Beltrán’s 2026 match log shows a kid who is no longer a stopgap. River even wrote a $25 million release clause into a deal that runs to December 2027.

HOW BELTRÁN TOOK THE JOB

1. Early 2023: Signs his first professional contract at River, later stretched to December 2027.
2. September 2024: Suffers a knee injury that costs him about eight months.
3. January 24, 2026: Starts against Barracas Central and stays in the side through an Apertura run to the final, including a penalty save against San Lorenzo.
4. May 11, 2026: Named in Lionel Scaloni’s 55-player World Cup prelist without a youth-team cap.
5. June 6, 2026: Debuts for Argentina in Texas, on at the 81st minute for Juan Musso in a 2-0 win over Honduras.
6. July 2026: Armani mutually ends a contract that had six months left; Beltrán is already the starter under Eduardo Coudet.

River still spent in that window. Thiago Almada arrived in August for $23.1 million. The club did not open a keeper column next to that cheque. A 21-year-old who already had Scaloni’s attention made a $7 million import look like a solution to a problem Núñez no longer had.

Cruz Azul Never Needed to Sell

Mexican talk in July put Cruz Azul’s number around $7 million. The club had paid €3.2 million (about $3 million) when the move from Atlético Nacional was announced on January 12, 2024, and Transfermarkt later listed him at €6 million as of May 20. On paper the markup was tidy. On the sporting side it was optional.

Joel Huiqui, the Cruz Azul coach, treated Mier as a starter for Apertura 2026. Two days after the River rumor circulated, there was no negotiation on the table and the sporting plan did not include a sale. Andrés Gudiño, contracted through June 30, 2027, remains the deputy. Selling the No. 1 to fund a replacement would have been a choice, not a need.

WHY THE CEMENTEROS HELD

• The paper: A May 30, 2024 extension locked Mier through June 30, 2029, so Cruz Azul can wait out any buyer.
• The medals: He was Concacaf Champions Cup Best Goalkeeper in 2025, then won Liga MX’s Clausura 2026 and the Campeón de Campeones.
• The bench: Gudiño and Emmanuel Ochoa cover cups and injuries, which is why Huiqui could keep the Colombian in the league XI.

He is also the first foreign goalkeeper Cruz Azul has used in nearly 30 years, ending a run of Mexican keepers that dated to 1997 after Norberto Scoponi. Once that bet paid off in a continental final, the incentive to cash it for River money shrank.

The 2023 Interview River Never Converted

This was the second time the same names lined up. In November 2023, after Mier won the Copa Colombia with Nacional, he said River had shown interest and that any deal sat with the clubs, not with him. He also said nobody from Núñez had called.

There is interest from River Plate. In the end it is their decision, and if they want to negotiate. It is a great club. It is something unique, very big.

He called River one of the best sides in South America and a shop window toward Europe. Cruz Azul moved faster. The January 2024 deal made him La Máquina’s No. 23, and River’s first pass at Mier stayed a quote. When Armani’s shirt finally came loose in 2026, the Argentine club went back to the same file and found the same problem: a seller that did not need to sell, and a starter it had already promoted.

Armani Walked the Reverse Path to Nacional

The irony sits with the man Mier was supposed to replace. Armani joined River from Atlético Nacional in January 2018 for a reported $3 million, stayed eight and a half years, and left with 366 appearances and 10 titles. In July 2026, at 39, he cut a deal that ran to December and went back to Medellín as a free agent, filling the hole David Ospina had left.

So the keeper River wanted as Armani’s heir stayed in Mexico, and Armani walked into the club that had sold that heir. Nacional gets a 39-year-old idol. River gets Beltrán. Cruz Azul keeps the Colombian it paid for in 2024. Each club closed a loop. None of those loops required a $7 million wire.

Mier’s Liga MX File Since 2024

The export case is not empty. Mier, born May 18, 2000 in Barrancabermeja and standing 1.90 m, has 96 Liga MX appearances for Cruz Azul through September 6 and 116 games in all competitions, per his Liga MX registration file. He has three Colombia caps. René Higuita, who worked with him at Nacional, is the comparison that follows the way he leaves his line.

MIER AT CRUZ AZUL BY SEASON

The 2025-26 league column is the mixed year the rumor hung on: 26 games, 27 goals conceded, 7 clean sheets, and 58 saves from 85 shots faced, a 68% save rate. On November 8, 2025 he suffered a fractured tibia against Pumas after a challenge by Adalberto Carrasquilla. The first forecast was four to six months. He missed the 2026 World Cup, used Cruz Azul’s under-21 side in February to finish the rehab, and took the first-team job back once Huiqui moved up from that bench.

The continental tape is cleaner. Cruz Azul beat Vancouver Whitecaps 5-0 in the June 2, 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup final in Mexico City, a night Vancouver did not register a shot on target, and Concacaf gave Mier the Best Goalkeeper award for nine saves and three clean sheets in seven games, including a shutout in the semifinal second leg against Tigres. That is the version of him a South American giant would be buying. It is also the version Cruz Azul can still use every weekend.

The Sweeper Who Divides the Stands

The scouting clip that travels is not a dive. It is Mier 40 metres from his line, taking a touch around a forward and playing as an extra centre-back. On January 29, 2025 against Necaxa he even produced a back-heel to wriggle out of a mistake and carried the ball toward halfway. That is the skill that made River look in 2023. It is also the habit that keeps Celeste fans in an argument.

When the touch is clean, he looks like the modern keeper Europe is supposed to want. When it is not, the same clip becomes a howler compilation, and the Atlas 3-3 from last season is the example people still send around. The louder split is not River versus Cruz Azul. It is whether that high starting position is a feature you pay $7 million for or a risk you are glad is still in Liga MX.

River, watching a 21-year-old it already pays, did not have to pick a side in that fight. Cruz Azul did, and Huiqui picked the starter he already had. The club’s own lineup card for September 6 still opened with the same name.

The $7 Million Figure That Never Became a Bid

By mid-July the rumor had a price and no paperwork. Armani was gone, Beltrán was in, and Cruz Azul’s planning for the second half of 2026 still ran through Mier. September’s league XI matched that plan. The number that circulated never had to be tested in a formal offer.

• A written bid: No formal River offer was confirmed in July, and none has surfaced since.
• A revised fee: The $7 million figure was a circulating range, not a signed asking price.
• A later window: The 2029 paper can still be opened. Nothing in the current squad lists says it will be.

Mier is 26, a Concacaf winner, a Liga MX champion, and still the man in the sky-blue shirt. River wanted that profile in 2023 and again in July. Both times the vacancy it thought it had was either occupied or about to be filled from inside. The bags never left Mexico, because the job in Argentina already had a name on it.
