Amorim Owns United Mistakes on Milan’s Three-Year Bet

Ruben Amorim told AC Milan he made mistakes at Manchester United, then split what he will change from what he will not. The 41-year-old said it at his first press conference after a 14-month Premier League spell that ended on 5 January 2026.

Milan still handed him a three-year contract, five months after that sacking, and he has opened Serie A unbeaten. The bet is that Lisbon, not Old Trafford, was the true sample.

He Owns the United Mistakes, Then Draws a Line

At Casa Milan on 8 July 2026, with owner Gerry Cardinale beside him, Amorim would not itemise the errors. He said the last job had a context he could not unpack in one sitting, and he still wanted a word with the stands he never got to address.

He added that he was proud to have been United’s coach for a year, and sorry he never spoke to the fans on the way out. Then came the line that actually prices the Milan job. “There are some things I will try to change and there are some things you never change. But I think I will be a better coach.”

The club put the full presentation on its own channel, Cardinale and Amorim answering in the same room rather than through a release.

That split, change versus core, is the whole hire. Milan did not buy a convert. It bought a coach who still thinks the method is the point, and who will only sand the edges.

A Three-Year Deal After an Unequivocal Failure

AC Milan tracked him for years, Cardinale said in the 16 June 2026 announcement, and pointed at Sporting CP rather than Manchester. The managing partner of RedBird Capital Partners called Amorim young, ambitious, and built around high-intensity attacking football. “We believe in him,” he said.

The deal is three years, about €3.5 million ($4 million) a season plus bonuses, after Massimiliano Allegri was sacked on 25 May 2026. Chief executive Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare and technical director Geoffrey Moncada went the same day. Special adviser Zlatan Ibrahimovic stayed. Massimo Calvelli later took the chief executive chair on a mandate Cardinale phrased as playing to win, instead of playing not to lose.

THE 2025-26 HANGOVER MILAN HANDED HIM

• League finish: Fifth in Serie A, 20 wins, 10 draws, 8 losses, 53 goals scored and 35 conceded, 70 points.
• The miss: A 2-1 home defeat by Cagliari on the last day dropped Milan behind Como’s 71 points and left Juventus on 69.
• Europe: Inter, Napoli, Roma and Como took the Champions League places; Milan went into the Europa League for a second straight season.
• Ownership line: RedBird called the late collapse an unequivocal failure and said football operations had to be rebuilt.

Amorim is the third Portuguese in Milan’s last four permanent coaches, after Paulo Fonseca and Sérgio Conceição, with Allegri the exception. Cardinale personally ran the search. He wanted the Sporting pressing game, not another winter of a low block.

1.23 Points a Game Was the Premier League Floor

United appointed him in November 2024 after Erik ten Hag, then cut him loose the morning after a 1-1 draw at Leeds. A club statement said the team sat sixth after 20 matches and that leadership had “reluctantly” decided it was time to change, to chase the highest possible finish. Darren Fletcher took the next game.

The all-competition ledger was 24 wins, 18 draws and 21 losses from 63 matches, a 38.1 percent win rate. In 47 Premier League games he won 15, drew 13 and lost 19. That is 58 points, 1.23 per game, the lowest of any United manager in the Premier League era, and a 31.9 percent league win rate.

AMORIM’S TWO BIG JOBS, SIDE BY SIDE

The 2024-25 United side also lost the Europa League final to Tottenham in Bilbao in May 2025, then opened the next season 17 points behind Arsenal by the time he left. He had been arguing in public that he was the manager, not a coach taking orders, after a tense week with director of football Jason Wilcox.

That is the file Milan opened anyway. The Old Trafford argument has not moved: plenty of United supporters still file him as the worst league-era appointment they have had, and they treat the friendly in August as a sideshow. Milan is betting the room was the problem.

What Two Lisbon Titles Bought Him

Sporting paid a reported €10 million to hire him from Braga in March 2020, then watched him end a 19-year league drought in his first full season. He left Alvalade on 10 November 2024 as a two-time champion whose teams pressed high, attacked in a back three, and turned academy players into first-team regulars.

THE SPORTING HAUL THAT SOLD MILAN

• Primeira Liga: Titles in 2020-21 (26-7-1) and 2023-24 (29-3-2, 90 points), plus Manager of the Year in both seasons.
• Cups: Taça da Liga wins in 2020-21 and 2021-22, and the 2021 Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira.
• The sample: 231 matches, 165 wins, only 33 defeats, 515 goals scored and 202 conceded.

Cardinale’s statement dwelt on that cycle: identity, pressing, and young players. It did not dwell on 1.23 points a game. The owner is paying for the coach who broke Porto and Benfica’s hold on the title, and treating Manchester as a bad fit rather than a verdict.

Amorim, a former Benfica midfielder with 14 Portugal caps and two World Cups, has said managing Milan was a career ambition. He is 41. The Sporting numbers are why a club that had just called its own season an unequivocal failure still gave him three years.

The Back Three Never Left the Building

The system United could not live with is the system Milan paid for. His preferred shape is a 3-4-2-1, and the first public 11-v-11 at Milanello in July put both sides in that shape. In a mid-August friendly in Wroclaw he beat United 4-2 and still played a 3-4-3. The first three Serie A games have used the same idea: a high line, a press that tries to win the ball back in seconds, wing-backs who do not finish matches because he wants fresh legs on the flanks.

HOW THE SHAPE TRAVELLED WITH HIM

1. 2018-19: At Casa Pia, after two losses, he switches to a back three and goes on an unbeaten run, later saying he had found the way he wanted to play.
2. March 2020 to November 2024: Sporting is built around that 3-4-2-1, two league titles and a generation of graduates.
3. November 2024 to January 2026: United keep asking him to bend. He does not. One line from that period, later replayed in Italy, was that not even the Pope would make him change the system.
4. July 2026: Milanello’s first session is 3-4-2-1 on both teams. The friendly against United in August is the same family of shapes.

He told the July room he wants to dominate with the ball, recover it as fast as possible, and entertain. He also said he might have to adjust once he had seen the players with his own eyes. So far the adjustment has been personnel and minutes, not the skeleton. Wing-backs and the two No. 10s behind a striker are still the jobs that have to work, or the bet fails the same way it failed in Manchester.

Seven Points, One Late Equalizer, Zero Losses

Serie A has given him a clean, small sample. Torino were beaten 2-1 on 23 August. Venezia were beaten 2-0 at San Siro on 28 August, Gonçalo Ramos at 69 minutes and an 89th-minute own goal. On 6 September Milan drew 1-1 with Juventus in Turin, Alphadjo Cissé at 68 minutes, Federico Gatti at 90+2.

MILAN’S FIRST THREE UNDER AMORIM

That is 7 points from three games, five scored and two conceded, fifth in the table, level on points with Juventus. Roma, Inter and Lazio had nine. He used all five substitutes in those league games and typically changed around the 69th minute. After Turin he did not dress it up. He said Milan had not deserved to win, Juventus had not deserved to lose, and the group had been working together only two months.

Pre-season had been messier: 2-2 at Celtic, 1-1 with Inter, 0-3 at Chelsea, then the 4-2 against United. The friendly is already used as a punchline in England. It is still a friendly. The league table is the actual opening bid, and it is unbeaten, not dominant.

The Second Star Is the Price of the Bet

Milan sit on 19 league titles. A 20th brings the second star on the shirt, and Amorim said in July that he wants it, while admitting he does not know if that will be the hardest task in front of him. The first real job, he said, is to play dominant football. Returning to the Champions League after back-to-back misses would already count as a repair year in this building.

He has spoken twice with Luka Modric and called the midfielder a way to have more of the ball at the start of the project, which is why Luka Modric stayed after that miss still matters to how this side will age. Christian Pulisic, he said, is the profile for the pockets between the lines, once a World Cup injury is managed. He gave the summer window a 10 out of 10 on the eve of Juventus and said every signing had to clear a full alignment test inside the club.

Lazio away on 12 September is the next league test, then Lecce at San Siro on 20 September. The 3-4-2-1 will be there. The apology to United fans is already on the record. The three-year clock is the part that is not.
