Chelsea Loaned Mamadou Sarr to Sociedad After Blocking Como

Mamadou Sarr started for Real Sociedad at Elche on 7 September, 10 days after Chelsea sent him to San Sebastian on a season-long loan with no buy option.

Como had asked for that same loan in July and were told no. Cesc Fabregas paid for Trevoh Chalobah instead, and the centre-back Chelsea would not send to Serie A is now playing in La Liga.

Chelsea Shut the Door on Como in July

In June, Como’s first Chelsea target was Chalobah, a 27-year-old with years of senior football already behind him. The Italian club had finished fourth in Serie A and were building a squad for a first Champions League season. His first start back in England was that afternoon at Hull. Five more games followed. Chelsea’s own statement on the Spanish loan put his Stamford Bridge total at seven. That is the entire senior return, in west London, on an eight-year contract.

Rosenior Recalled Him, Then the Minutes Dried Up

Liam Rosenior had coached Sarr at Strasbourg and took the Chelsea job in January 2026 after Enzo Maresca. The recall was meant to reunite them. Sarr started at Hull, then drifted. He did not settle under Rosenior or under interim boss Calum McFarlane.

The sides struck a verbal agreement on a season-long loan on 24 August and confirmed it on 28 August, the day before Sarr turned 21.

The Basque club’s statement puts the loan until the end of 2026-27. There is no buy option. Chelsea keep the contract through 2033. Real Sociedad get a year of a right-footed centre-back who can play both sides of the pair. Head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo planned to use him on the left, with 20-year-old Jon Martín on the right.

The club called him a Senegal international who had already played at a World Cup and said his physique and reading of the game would add something from the first day. Sarr arrived in Donostia, did his medical, and was presented on 31 August with Héctor Fort.

He also told the club Chelsea had a good project in place for young players. A year later that project is a La Liga loan with no clause for the next club to keep him. Chelsea get him back in 2027 unless someone writes a new cheque. Real Sociedad get the minutes. That is the bet.
