The Maracana Farewell Was the Last Night of That Brazil
Brazil’s 6-2 Maracana send-off launched the USA World Cup trip. After Norway, Ancelotti cut 17 of those 26 and closed Neymar’s cycle.
Brazil’s 6-2 Maracanã send-off on May 31 was the last night of a 26-man World Cup squad Carlo Ancelotti has now broken apart. More than 72,000 people turned a Panama friendly into a party, then the Seleção flew to the United States chasing a first world title since 2002.
On September 9 Ancelotti named his first list of the new cycle and left 17 of the 26 World Cup players off it. Neymar, Casemiro and Danilo, the men the stadium still wanted that night in Rio, are gone.
The Maracanã Party They Flew Out On
Sunday in Rio did what a farewell is built to do. Vinícius Júnior scored inside the first minute, Casemiro headed in before half-time, and the second-half shift poured in four more through Rayan, Lucas Paquetá, Igor Thiago from the spot, and Danilo Santos. Panama’s replies were a Matheus Cunha own goal and a late strike from Carlos Harvey.
Ancelotti changed almost the entire starting XI at the break, and the stands stayed loud anyway. Neymar, listed with a grade 2 tear in his right calf, did not make the matchday squad and still drew the loudest chant of the night when the cameras found him. Panama’s players lined up for photographs with him after the whistle. The Brazilian party, staff included, posed in front of a thinning crowd for the last home picture of the cycle.
THE NIGHT IN RIO
- The score: Brazil 6-2 Panama, the last match on home soil before the USA trip.
- The crowd: More than 72,000 at the Maracanã, with Neymar’s name the chant that closed the night.
- The next step: The squad flew on June 1, and the CBF posted the farewell film the following morning.
The film is the clip that still circulates as a goodbye. It is also, three months later, a roll call of a squad Ancelotti has already taken apart.
Neymar Boarded With a Calf Injury
The CBF put Neymar on the 26 even after the calf went. Recovery was put at two to three weeks, which pointed past the Panama night and past the last warm-up. He traveled anyway, and the squad left Rio with Neymar’s fitness still in doubt, a question the send-off never resolved.
Vinícius, already the loudest player on the pitch against Panama, gave up the No. 10 shirt for the tournament and wore No. 7. Neymar took 10. The Champions League finalists in the group, including Gabriel Magalhães, Gabriel Martinelli and Marquinhos, joined from Budapest after Paris Saint-Germain’s final and met the others at the New Jersey camp.
Neymar’s first minutes of the World Cup came on June 25 in Miami Gardens, when he replaced Cunha in the 76th minute against Scotland. That was his first Brazil appearance since October 2023. He later took a penalty in stoppage time against Norway, the last kick that still had a Seleção shirt on his back.
The calf was never a secret at the Maracanã. The send-off treated it as a subplot. By July it was the frame of the whole trip: a 34-year-old No. 10 who arrived late, scored once from the spot, and then walked away.
A 2-1 Loss in New Jersey Closed the Tournament
The USA itinerary after Rio was a straight line that looked comfortable until it was not. Brazil beat Egypt 2-1 in Cleveland on June 6, then opened the World Cup at MetLife Stadium on June 13. FIFA’s record of that Group C opener against Morocco is a 1-1 draw in front of 80,663, Ismael Saibari lobbing Alisson in the 21st minute and Vinícius answering in the 32nd. The right-back choice against Morocco had been a live debate before that first night; the result left no one looking settled.
From there the group was a procession. Cunha scored twice and Vinícius added one as Haiti went down 3-0 in Philadelphia. Vinícius scored twice more and Cunha once as Scotland went down 3-0. Brazil topped the group on seven points and a plus-six goal difference, level on points with Morocco and ahead on goals. Japan took them to the last kick of a round-of-32 tie in Houston before the CBF log recorded a come from behind against Japan, Casemiro in the 56th minute and Martinelli in the 90th plus fifth.
BRAZIL AFTER THE SEND-OFF
| Date | Opponent | Result |
|---|---|---|
| May 31 | Panama (Maracanã) | 6-2 W |
| June 6 | Egypt (Cleveland) | 2-1 W |
| June 13 | Morocco (MetLife) | 1-1 D |
| June 19 | Haiti (Philadelphia) | 3-0 W |
| June 25 | Scotland (Miami Gardens) | 3-0 W |
| June 29 | Japan, round of 32 (Houston) | 2-1 W |
| July 5 | Norway, round of 16 (MetLife) | 1-2 L |
Erling Haaland scored in the 79th minute and again in the 90th at MetLife, again in front of 80,663. Neymar’s penalty in the 90th plus 10th was the last Brazil goal of the tournament. It was the national team’s earliest World Cup exit since 1990, when Argentina knocked them out at the same stage. Ancelotti later said his substitutions against Norway cost Brazil control of the match.
Ancelotti Called Time on a Generation
Neymar, 34, retired from the Seleção after that defeat. Casemiro, 34, and Danilo, 35, did not issue the same statement, and they did not need to. In a July 30 interview Ancelotti put all three out of Brazil’s future plans and pointed the work at Copa América 2028, not at dragging the over-30 core toward 2030.
I think this World Cup marks the end of a generation of very important players. Starting with Neymar, going through Danilo, Casemiro, all those players who were over 30 years old at the World Cup.
Carlo Ancelotti, Brazil head coach, July 30, 2026
He said he would not dump all 26, and he named Marquinhos as the kind of senior player who could stay as a sign of continuity. He also said the idea was still to change, to put in a new generation. On the Neymar file he was colder about the calendar than about the man: the thing that bothered him was that Neymar could have been ready for the first match, not the fourth. The attitude in camp, he said, had been serious.
The CBF had already handed him a deal running through 2030 on May 14, two weeks before the Panama night. He was hired in May 2025, drew 0-0 with Ecuador on June 5 of that year in his first match, and was not going to be moved by one knockout. The farewell squad did not get the same protection.
Who From That Night Survived the Cut?
The September 9 list is the first Brazil sheet in years with no Neymar on it, and that blank is the send-off played in reverse. Ancelotti called 26 players for friendlies against Australia on September 25 in Townsville and September 29 in Brisbane, then against India on October 3 in Kolkata, the first meeting of the two senior teams. He called it a balanced group and then said the job was to form a new one. Eight of the names had never been called to the senior side. Ten of the 26 play in Brazil, three of them at Corinthians.
The World Cup goalkeepers, Alisson, Ederson and Weverton, are all out. So are Casemiro, Fabinho, Paquetá, Cunha, Martinelli, Alex Sandro, Bremer, the defender Danilo, and Neymar. Estêvão and João Pedro, left off the World Cup 26, are back. Wesley, who tore up in the Egypt friendly and was replaced by Atalanta’s Éderson before Morocco, is back too.
THE NINE WHO STAYED
- The spine: Marquinhos, Gabriel Magalhães and Douglas Santos from the back line that started the USA trip.
- The midfield: Bruno Guimarães, plus Botafogo’s Danilo Santos, the one Danilo still in the picture.
- The attack: Vinícius Júnior, Raphinha, Endrick and Rayan, four who were already on the Maracanã grass on May 31.
Ancelotti said the door is not closed on everyone else, and that he would rather follow young players whose club minutes do not always match what the Seleção needs. The first public test of that sentence is Australia, not another night at the Maracanã.
Only 1970 Turned a Maracanã Goodbye Into a Title
The Panama match was Brazil’s eighth game at the Maracanã immediately before a World Cup. The previous seven brought four wins, two draws and one defeat, 14 goals scored and six conceded. The only time that ritual preceded a world title was 1970, when Brazil beat Austria 1-0 on April 29 and then won the tournament in Mexico.
The 2022 home close-out was a 4-0 qualifier win over Chile at the same stadium, and that squad still died in the quarter-finals. In 1998 the Maracanã send-off was a 0-1 loss to Argentina. The 2014 last night on Brazilian soil was not even there; it was a 1-0 win over Serbia in São Paulo, and the tournament that followed ended 7-1 to Germany in Belo Horizonte. Tite’s 2018 and 2022 teams did their last friendlies in Europe.
So the 6-2 was in line with the building’s history and told you almost nothing about June and July. The useful document from that night is the squad list in the tunnel, because Ancelotti has now drawn a line through most of it. Townsville gets a different Brazil on September 25, and the men the Maracanã chanted for will not be on the flight.
Frequently Asked Questions
When Did Brazil Play Their Farewell Match Before the 2026 World Cup?
Brazil’s last match on home soil before the tournament was the May 31 friendly against Panama at the Maracanã. Ancelotti changed 10 of his starting players at half-time, which is why the scorers split so cleanly between the first-half pair of Vinícius and Casemiro and the four who arrived after the break.
Did Neymar Play in Brazil’s Maracanã Send-Off?
No. He had a grade 2 tear in his right calf, was left out of the matchday squad, and was not expected to be ready for contact work until around June 10. His first appearance of the tournament was the June 25 substitute’s shift against Scotland, his first Brazil cap since October 2023.
How Far Did Brazil Go at the 2026 World Cup?
Brazil won Group C, beat Japan in the round of 32, and went out 1-2 to Norway in the round of 16 on July 5. It was their earliest World Cup exit since 1990, when they lost at the same stage to Argentina, and Haaland’s two late goals at MetLife were the ones that ended the hexa hunt.
Who Did Ancelotti Keep From the World Cup Squad?
Nine World Cup players made the September 9 list: Douglas Santos, Gabriel Magalhães, Marquinhos, Danilo Santos, Bruno Guimarães, Endrick, Raphinha, Rayan and Vinícius Júnior. The eight first-time senior call-ups on that same sheet were Pedro Morisco, Otávio, Arthur Dias, Jair, Matheuzinho, Mauro Júnior, Breno Bidon and Gabriel Bontempo.
Which Maracanã Send-Off Is the Only One That Preceded a World Cup Title?
The 1970 win over Austria, 1-0 on April 29 at the Maracanã, is the only one of Brazil’s eight pre-World Cup matches at that stadium that was followed by a world title. Pelé’s team left for Mexico after that night and came home with the third star; none of the other seven Maracanã goodbyes, including 2026, produced a trophy.
