Trump Handed Spain the World Cup, Then Stayed Onstage

FIFA president Gianni Infantino said the host president always presents the World Cup trophy with him. On July 19 he and Donald Trump did it, and Trump stayed in Spain’s lift.

Spain had beaten Argentina 1-0 in extra time at New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., on a 106th-minute goal from substitute Ferran Torres. Trump, 80, was at his first and only match of a 104-game tournament.

Trump Handed Spain the Trophy and Did Not Leave

The president arrived by Marine One, sat behind protective glass with Melania Trump, Infantino, Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian prime minister Mark Carney, and patted the trophy when a staffer held it out in the first half. On the Fox pregame show he declined to pick a winner and said it was hard to bet against Lionel Messi. Sheinbaum and Carney stood to Trump’s left for the medals. Trump put a runners-up medal on Messi and a winner’s medal on Lamine Yamal. Then the co-host leaders left the stage. Trump and Infantino kept a hand each on the trophy, walked it to Spain captain Rodri, and did not clear out.

THE ORDER ON THE PITCH

Days Before Kickoff, Infantino Reached for History

A week earlier, with the United States already out, Infantino was still selling the joint walk as protocol rather than a favor. He said he and Trump were in touch regularly, almost every day, that the president was happy, that he enjoyed the tournament, and that he watched the games on television. Asked if security was why Trump had not sat in a stadium yet, Infantino said no, and guessed the president still had a few other things to do.

He had already told an American morning show they would enjoy the final together and hand the trophy to the winner, of course, together. We are together all the time, he said. The friendship was not a secret. The tradition line was the new part, and it was doing a lot of work.

The Host-Leader Handoff Was a Patchy Custom

FIFA told a Brazilian newspaper in 2014 that the FIFA president is responsible for the handover and that tradition has the FIFA president and the head of state presenting together. That is close to what Infantino said in 2026. It is not the same as always. FIFA’s written award-ceremony rules put a FIFA representative, the host head of state or a stand-in, and the team delegations on the stage, then say a FIFA representative will present the winner with the trophy. WHO HANDED OVER THE WORLD CUP

Between 1950 and 1962, FIFA presidents did most of the handing, with the Swedish king as the break in 1958 and Stanley Rous doing Chile 1962. From 1966 through 2014, host leaders were usually in the shot, including Walter Scheel, King Juan Carlos I, Miguel de la Madrid, Francesco Cossiga, Jacques Chirac and Horst Köhler. Then Infantino, in Russia and in Qatar, presented the trophy himself even though Vladimir Putin and Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani were on the podium. Trump is the first United States president to do the job. The last time the tournament was on U.S. soil, Clinton spoke at the opening in Chicago and skipped the final.

Why Mexico and Canada Never Touched the Gold

The 2026 tournament was a three-nation bid. Sheinbaum and Carney had already been used as stage partners, pulling host names at the draw in Washington with Infantino. On final night they were reduced to the medal line. FIFA’s choice followed the venue: the final was in New Jersey, so the U.S. president walked the trophy. The other two co-hosts were in the suite, on the stage, and then gone before the gold moved.

That split fits a tournament Infantino kept wrapping around one capital even as matches ran through three countries. The 48-team World Cup expansion put 104 games on the map. A majority of them were in the United States. The closing image followed the same map. Trump said at a FIFA reception in Trump Tower on July 17 that it had turned out America was a soccer country, and that based on the numbers he would be requesting the tournament again immediately.

FIFA Cropped the Host Out of Its Own Picture

The White House posted the handoff the same night, with Trump and Infantino in the frame as Spain’s players closed in.

FIFA’s own celebration photo of the lift left him out except for the edge of a navy suit on the right, a crop tight enough to look deliberate. Spain’s still photograph of the lift was taken a few seconds later, after he had already stepped aside. A Spain video of the full celebration cropped him while he was still close to the group, even at the cost of cutting players out of the shot. Midfielder Mikel Merino had already done a version of Trump’s dance in front of him before the lift.

The fight over the frame is the part of July 19 that does not show up in Infantino’s history lesson. Queen Elizabeth II handed Bobby Moore the Jules Rimet Trophy and got out of the shot. Videla, Mussolini and a line of elected presidents wanted the picture; they did not have to be tugged across the podium by the FIFA president in white trainers. Infantino’s defense of the plan always leaned on process. The relationship underneath it was not process. He said he was always in touch with Trump and with a government that, in his words, was doing a great job with the World Cup. During the tournament Trump called him about the red card shown to U.S. striker Folarin Balogun. The card was later rescinded. That call now sits inside Norway’s ethics complaint over Trump, alongside the FIFA peace prize Infantino had already given him.

Critics of the pair treat the peace prize, the Balogun review and the MetLife linger as one file. The objection that kept recurring after the final was narrower and sharper than a neutrality lecture. A host leader on the podium is a known World Cup habit. A host leader who will not leave the champions’ photograph is a different habit, and it is the one Infantino had already watched once with Chelsea.
