Strasbourg Hands Hugo Oliveira a Three-Year Rebuild

Hugo Oliveira has Strasbourg sixth in Ligue 1, with eight goals scored and seven conceded in three games, after a three-year deal the club confirmed on 12 July.

He replaced Gary O’Neil, who left for Ipswich Town in June, and walked into a squad already trimmed to satisfy UEFA.

Oliveira Signs for Three Years After the Ipswich Raid

Racing Club de Strasbourg Alsace appointed Oliveira as first-team coach on 12 July 2026 and sold the hire as a fit for a long-term sporting plan. The Portuguese, 47, arrived from Famalicão after a fifth-place Primeira Liga season the club called historic. He signed for three years.

BlueCo, which owns Strasbourg and Chelsea, had already watched one Alsace coach leave for Stamford Bridge in January. In June it watched another leave for Portman Road. The July release still talked about developing players and staying the course.

Hugo Oliveira, Strasbourg manager, club announcement

He said at his unveiling that he wanted to build something for the long-term, and that he felt he was the missing piece of the puzzle. He speaks Portuguese, Spanish, English and French, and he did his first club interview in French. That bilingual brief had been part of the search. Former Celtic manager Wilfried Nancy, who had said he wanted a Ligue 1 job, was on a shortlist of three; talks that had involved Thomas Frank did not go further. Strasbourg picked the Famalicão coach.

Two Head Coaches Gone Before Pre-Season

Liam Rosenior took Strasbourg through the first half of 2025-26, then left for Chelsea on 6 January. O’Neil, the former Bournemouth and Wolves manager, started the next day. He lasted until 23 June, when newly promoted Ipswich hired him on a three-year contract and paid a fee of about €5 million including add-ons. Two years remained on his Racing deal.

Under O’Neil the team finished eighth in Ligue 1, with 15 wins, eight draws and 11 defeats, 58 goals scored and 47 conceded, on 53 points. Monaco took seventh, and the last European place, by a single point. Racing still reached the Conference League semi-finals, losing to Rayo Vallecano, and the Coupe de France last four. Joaquín Panichelli scored 16 league goals and 20 in all competitions.

Ipswich then came back for players. Forward Julio Enciso and midfielder Abdoul Ouattara moved in deals put at a combined €50 million. Enciso had been at Portman Road on loan in 2024-25. Captain Emmanuel Emegha is joining Chelsea. The summer window, after UEFA told the club to cut player costs, was booked as a profit of about €80 million. Jacobo Ortega arrived from Real Madrid for about €10 million as part of the rebuild Oliveira inherited.

THE COACHING TURNOVER IN 2026

That is three head coaches in one calendar year at a club whose owners also run Chelsea. BlueCo’s longer play with Oliveira is to treat Alsace as a place where a coach can grow a young squad. The last two men in the job were not left in place long enough to finish a season.

What UEFA’s €25 Million Fine Means for the Bench

On 30 June, UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body closed monitoring for the 2025-26 season. Strasbourg had reported a squad cost ratio above 70 percent for the 2025 calendar year, the cap in the club licensing rules. The body posted a €25 million squad-cost fine, the largest total in that round, with €12 million of it conditional on a sharp drop in the ratio during 2026.

THE FINE UEFA POSTED ON 30 JUNE

• Total posted: €25 million, ahead of Aston Villa’s €22.5 million and Chelsea’s €3 million.
• Due now: €13 million ($14.8 million), the slice that is not conditional.
• Still hanging: €12 million if the 2026 ratio does not fall far enough.
• The trigger: wages, agent costs and player amortisation above 70 percent of relevant income.

The due slice sits in the same range as the prize money Racing earned by reaching the Conference League last four. UEFA also told the club to decrease player costs in a season with no European football, and it attached a List A registration limit that does not bite because Strasbourg are not in UEFA competition. Chelsea, the sister club, was fined a fraction of the Alsace total. Oliveira’s brief is to press and score with a cheaper, younger group than the one that made last spring’s run.

Famalicão’s Fifth Place Was the Audition

Hugo Filipe Carvalho de Oliveira was born on 22 June 1979 in Penafiel. He played as a goalkeeper and a forward in the youth sides at USC Paredes, took a communications degree at Universidade Fernando Pessoa in Porto, and spent two years as a regional sports journalist before he went into coaching in 2002.

Seven Years on Marco Silva’s Bench

He earned a UEFA goalkeeper-coach licence in Scotland in 2004, at 25, and was the first Portuguese to hold it. Stints followed at Rebordosa, FC Marco and as an assistant at Gil Vicente. From 2009 to 2011 he worked under Carlos Queiroz with Portugal, then stayed with the federation’s youth sides. On 26 June 2011 he joined Jorge Jesus’s staff at Benfica, where he spent five seasons with Jan Oblak, Júlio César and Ederson.

In January 2017 he moved to Hull City with Marco Silva, then followed him to Watford, Everton and Fulham. Ligue 1’s own profile puts him at more than 250 games as Silva’s assistant across those four Premier League clubs. When Silva left Fulham for Benfica, Fulham moved for Alvaro Arbeloa instead of promoting the keeper coach who had sat beside Silva for seven years.

Fifth Place on a Small Primeira Liga Budget

Famalicão gave him the first head-coach job on 10 December 2024, with the team eighth. He took 21 league matches that season, won eight, drew five and lost eight, and the club finished seventh. In 2025-26, on one of the division’s thinner budgets and with a squad whose average age was 23.2, Famalicão went 15-11-8, scored 42, conceded 29, and finished fifth on 56 points. Porto (88), Sporting CP (82), Benfica (80) and Braga (59) filled the European slots. The gap to Braga was three points. Oliveira was named manager of the month for March 2026.

OLIVEIRA’S TEAMS, LAST THREE SEASONS

His Primeira Liga ledger as a number one is 55 games, 23 wins, 16 draws and 16 defeats. Racing paid a fee estimated at just over €2 million to take him. The method that sold the move is the same one now on show in Alsace: a 4-3-3 that tries to have the ball, press high, and treat transitions as the main phase of the game.

The 0-4 and the 6-2 Arrived Together

Ligue 1 opened on 21 August at the Vélodrome. Marseille won 4-0. Amine Gouiri scored in the 46th minute and from the penalty spot in the 68th, Keyliane Abdallah added a third in the 89th, and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg finished it in the 90+6th. Racing had 33 percent of the ball. Oliveira said the first half had been useful, then a goal, a red card and a penalty in the second half made the night very hard, and that it was still useful for young players.

Eight days later Strasbourg beat Lens 2-1 at La Meinau. On 6 September they won 6-2 at Troyes. Ortega, Diogo Sousa, Giovanni Reyna, Sam Amo-Ameyaw (twice) and Conrad Harder all scored. Through three matches Racing lead Ligue 1 in goals per game at 2.67 and sit 16th of 18 for goals conceded at 2.33. Sixth place on six points is the table version of that split.

THE FIRST THREE LIGUE 1 MATCHES

The 0-4 was a thin sample used to write the hire off. Two matches later the same 4-3-3 had put six past a promoted side, with a squad that had just sold its Conference League core. On 7 September the club posted that Oliveira and Sousa had made the matchday team of the week, Oliveira marked 8 out of 10.

The Goalkeeper as an Extra Outfield Player

Oliveira prefers a 4-3-3 and wants his team to dominate matches at all times. He has said tactics should let a side control its emotions and dictate the game, and that the ball must be won back as fast as possible because transitions are the most important phases in modern football. In possession the shape has been moving into a 2-3-5, with inverted full-backs, split centre-backs, and the goalkeeper stepping up as a third centre-back. That is the same idea he spelled out at his unveiling, when he called the keeper an 11th outfield player, the first striker, with the striker as the first defender.

HOW HE WANTS THE TEAM TO PLAY

• Base shape: a 4-3-3 that looks for the ball and a high tempo.
• On the ball: a 2-3-5, full-backs inside, number eights pushed into the front line.
• Without it: a 4-4-2 mid-block and a hard press to win the ball back fast.
• The keeper: treated as an extra outfield player in the build-up.
• The roster: a young Ligue 1 group he has called talented, with Ismaël Doukouré held up as a leader who carries the club’s culture.

He said after the window closed that the group does not have much Ligue 1 experience, and that there would be no excuses. The attacking numbers after three games match the Famalicão tape. So does the other end of the pitch.

Monaco Visit La Meinau on Saturday

Monaco are unbeaten, three wins from three, nine points, and they come to Strasbourg on Saturday, 12 September, at 17:15 local time. Paris FC, also on seven points, wait the following weekend. Oliveira has had two months, three league matches, and a squad rebuilt under a UEFA cap after two coaches left before pre-season.

The three-year contract is the club’s answer to that churn. The football he was hired to play is already visible, in a 6-2 and in a 0-4, with sixth place as the early return.
