Pio Esposito Stays at Inter After His Agent Shuts United Down

Mario Giuffredi told English clubs to stop inventing a market for Pio Esposito, then Inter signed the 21-year-old until 2032. Manchester United spent the summer floating him as cover for Benjamin Sesko. His agent called those stories ghosts.

United then shut the window on 1 September with no new centre-forward. Esposito, 1.91m and already starting Serie A games next to Lautaro Martinez, is no one’s spare part.

Stop Inventing Ghosts, Giuffredi Said

Giuffredi spoke on Radio CRC on 9 June 2026, with the summer market still months away from opening. He was answering the English circuit as a bloc, Arsenal included, not a single Old Trafford exclusive.

On Arsenal he was blunter. “When they call me, I don’t even waste time talking. We’re already at a huge club. We don’t need to hear from anyone.” Inter, he said, would not give the player up, and the thought of leaving “doesn’t even brush us.”

That is the line United’s summer graphics never absorbed. The already shut the United rumour in June, and he kept repeating it. On 20 April, at Coverciano’s Inside the Sport event, he had already said the boy and the club wanted “the next 10 years” together. “For me the market for Pio Esposito has never started and never will.”

He wants to play more than he has but that is good healthy competition.” The Dutchman was an unused substitute in the opening league games. Minutes look scarce behind Sesko, Cunha and Mbeumo.

That is the irony the Esposito links never priced in. United already had a second striker on the books, a £36.5 million forward they spent the summer trying to park in Florence, Turin or Merseyside. The player they sketched as cheap, tall, Italian cover is starting next to Inter’s captain on a six-year contract. The player they actually kept is the one who wanted out on deadline day.

The Backup Tag Never Fitted This Striker

The United brief treated Esposito as a developmental understudy. Inter’s last three years treated him as a first-team striker in waiting, then as one in the side.
